On a 2 hour walk along the E. end of Mt. Pleasant Rd (Town of Dryden) this
morning, I encountered approx. 100 SNOW BUNTINGS, 22 HORNED LARKS, 11 CEDAR
WAXWINGS, and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. No longspurs seen, by me anyway. Lots
of CROWS.

This morning, before it was seen at the feeder, the male Red-bellied Woodpecker
that frequents our suet was eating a frozen brown apple still hanging on a
tree. It was drilling into it and extracting "bites".
Fruit is frequently mentioned as part of their diet, but I hadn't before seen
one ea
I think the location will be convenient for travelers on the Thruway by being
immediately on the north side of the interchange of I-90 & NYS-414, near Magee
at the west edge of the Town of Tyre. I would expect additional traffic on
NYS-414, NYS-318, to the east NYS-5/US-20, to the northeast mayb
A 2 hour walk/drive around Summerhill this morning produced very little in the
way of birds - until the drive home.
Salt Road in the state forest was especially quiet. No chickadees or juncoes. A
couple of crows & bluejays. One distant nuthatch. Best Bird: calling Pileated
Woodpecker.

The CasiNO Tyre web site ( http://www.casinofreetyre.com ) points out the risk
of runoff from the parking areas into White Brook as a cause for concern.
It's a good site (discounting the obvious bias towards one side of the issue
which one would expect from the site name!).

The casino is likely to be the anchor for other major development in the
immediate area. One $100,000,000 project already has been presented to
the Planning Board, to be located a little further west on Rte 318, and
proposing "hundreds of thousands" of sq feet of retail & commercial
space on a

Just as Gary Kohl. left after viewing SNOWY OWL from his car, I heard RAVENS
approaching!
2 croaked constantly as they flew low over the Snowy Owl a few times. Snowy
stayed put, but craned its head around watching Ravens, who have now left.

By blue house across from Teet & Sons Scrap metal. Bob M said it is house #
955. These are numbers in Town of Groton. House #s coming to here from Rt 90
descended from 380s to 100s before I passed into north end of Groton.
Owl is on fence post east side of rd just north of blue house. Fence is i
3 pm, Sunday. The large flock of snow buntings is still on Mt Pleasant, flying
back and forth across the east end of the road.

I remember many years ago seeing an apple tree with frozen fruit with several
Pine Grosbeaks enjoying the fruit. Lovely sight.
By the way, Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville had both Long-eared and
Saw-whet Owls today on the Bog Trail.My favorite kind of Christmas present!

This afternoon, for the first time since last April, we saw an EASTERN
SCREECH-OWL in our box in northeast Ithaca. I feel nearly certain that I've
never seen this particular owl before. It has distinctive arcs on the
