I had a new yard bird visit me last night! A COMMON NIGHTHAWK came swooping
in just before 9pm last night, 5/29/24. I associate them with open gravelly
lots or open ag fields, and I don't believe we have a gravelly lot near us.
We do have a small hay field next door, but the rest of the immediate l

registered once. But just an additional bit of potential information.

Just spotted a sleeping Common Nighthawk on the east Ithaca recreation path,
about a couple hundred yards from Honness Lane on the east side. Wish I had my
camera, all I can offer are cellphone pictures. It did not seem to notice my
presence there at all

Last evening at dusk a Common Nighthawk flew over, quite low. I believe the
location of the sighting (Bower Road, Trumansburg) is out of the basin.

Interestingly, the (presumably same) COMMON NIGHTHAWK is back roosting
above the base of the Sherwood Platform on the Wilson Trail North at
Sapsucker Woods this morning, just one branch back from where it was on

To find nighthawk, walk 1/3 boardwalk length from base, turn around and
look back to trail. Find side-by-side pair of tall trees right next to

Hi Tom,
Very likely. The sound of Nighthawks over collegetown (and downtown Ithaca) is
a fond memory of summer from the sixties and seventies, when they still bred
here.
Migrants seem to linger here for a few days, just long enough to make me wonder
if they might take it up again some year.
Holly and I are pretty sure we heard a common nighthawk on Oak St, above
the gorge in Collegetown about 10 PM. Are they likely to be heard here at
this time of year? Is there something else it may have been that's call is
similar?

Was just out in my backyard (N Tioga St, Ithaca) filling my bird feeder when I
happened to spot a Common Nighthawk flying overhead. Loopy flight as it
“hunted” for insects. Headed north toward Stewart Park and the lake.
