RE:[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls
The number of red polls at our feeders has dwindled. We have had red polls consistently since mid-Feb, with a peak number of 80-100. This past weekend we had 20-30, then 12-15 for a couple of days, yesterday 1 and so far none today. The goldfinches are gone too. Hi Anne. Great questions. Don't know about redpolls but I just read today ( Sibley's "What Its Like To Be A Bird") that with chickadees the birds, themselves, can tell make from female because the black bib on the males fluoresce more deeply than on the female. Trouble is, THAT is something OUR brains aren't wired to see. This winter my first- ever redpoll flock has been eating niger almost faster than I can stock it. They do NOT like the fancy finch mix, their bill flips have informed me. So I have been looking at the wild differences in cap and breast and belly colors. The caps are a distinctly more classic red, while rest can be deep rose. But the caps! I will bet that their red caps fluoresce in the daylight UV, intensifying the “brightness”. This is what budgie yellow caps- in exactly that area of feathers-do. Just the cap, not a whole yellow head. Anyone? Testable with UV lamp and maybe Collections specimens? Fluorescence in the visible range will be spectacular. Budgies look like miners with little head lamps. Also note. Like budgies, the caps/polls do not differentiate males and females. I think accentuating them helps detect flock mate scanning and flying during flock foraging. I am probably wrong but would love to know. There seems to be an inexaustible supply! My feeders now support about 50 and a nippy disputatious bunch they are. Lots of pics of heads forward, low, bills open until another moves. Niger is one focus. The other is bits of suet on the ground from sloppy eaters. Lots of really bright rosy breast feathers. No Hoary Redpolls though. I've had 2 Redpolls at my feeders for a week or so, first year to see any stick around my Newfield neighborhood. A RB Nuthatch has been here all winter. It's a joy to see one nearly every day! My two redpolls that have been here for a week apparently got outed and more arrived today. Not 20 yet but 6-7 and feisty! Niger and those peanut suet blocks. Took a close up video of one at suet 5 inches from sliding door. Competition from red bellied woodpecker and Pileated is a little one sided., of course. This is on Hile School rd. Finally, we have a small flock of Redpolls coming to our feeders! FIrst it was 2 or 3 every other day or so, for about 15 minutes each day over the last 2 weeks. Then they discovered the one niger seed sock feeder that has been up there since fall. Yesterday, there were about 5 on that sock so I rushed out to buy two mesh niger feeders and more seed and today there are about 20 on and off all day. Fun! I've also seen them eating suet. They mostly ignore the sunflower seeds now. At times there are 8 or more squeezing onto each of the mesh feeders, and on the sock! This is all happening on Hunt Hill Road, 7 miles east of Ithaca (town of Dryden). Now, where are those Evening Grosbeaks. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls, Rough-leg and Horned Larks
Sue and I ran into a huge flock of Redpolls Wednesday morning which we estimate at 500 plus birds. Binos only so no chance to find a Hoary among them. It was a wonderful site as they moved between the Cayuga Lake Basin and the Seneca Lake Basin while dining on Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium labium) seeds. We returned to the area an hour later to get more photos of this swiftly moving flock, the largest we have ever encountered. I made the error of attaching the photo here resulting in Lyris rejecting the post as too large. Photos are on our Facebook page and on the finch network group. In addition we had several smaller flocks of Horned Larks and a very handsome Rough-legged Hawk in the area. Merry Christmas. I spent time at the Mt. Pleasant East fields this morning most of the time with Sandy Podulka looking at Redpolls. There were several flocks flying around and disappearing in the grass to feed. As Gladys noted they could disappear and you had to have a good angle and elevation to see them. We were able to get some good views and Sandy was able to photograph a few. I had one candidate for possible Hoary Redpoll. The flocks would separate and reconvene making accurate counts difficult, but my total estimate of widely separate groups was 150 birds. Driving home just after noon today, as I approached my driveway, a group of Redpolls flew up from the field on the north side of Mt. Pleasant Rd, into the treetops on the south side. It looked like about 20-25 total. I got out to look at them. Quite a few flew back into the woods further. Others sat in the treetops close to the road, resting and preening. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls
Today about 1:30, while walking the doggies, I first heard Redpolls in the weedy field west of the road that goes back to the ATT tower. I did see them flying around and they flew down into the weeds totally out of sight. Did not have my binocs. When I returned, walking west down Mt. Pleasant they flew up from the field, flew south, across the road up into the trees. I got the doggies back home and went back out with my binocs. ( 2 PM. )They flew back to the field after several minutes and I waited. They soon flew back south, across Mt. Pleasant into the trees again. I watched them for several minutes, they were being quite vocal. They flew down into a large bush that was near a telephone pole. They stayed there till a car came by and scared them up and they flew back north into the field. I estimated maybe 60-80 or so. They were vocalizing all the time, but would be quiet when they dropped down into the weeds. There is a flock of about 75 redpolls currently feeding along the shoulder and in the fruit trees directly across from the Cornell orchard store. I don't know if they will last, but they didn't seemed concerned when I stopped right next to them. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls in Newfield yesterday
A flock of around 50 Common Redpolls visited my Newfield back yard yesterday around noon. It may have been more than 50, but I was indoors and they were very close to the house, so I could only count them in small groups. They stayed for just a few minutes, but what a treat those few minutes were! [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls on Tucker Rd. in Enfield
I went in search of the redpolls again today - I hadn’t seen them since the snowfall January 19. First I turned up 5 American Robins in the spot on Tucker Road where Rachel Lodder and I have seen the redpolls before, and was going to be happy with that, but when I returned maybe a half hour later there were at least 18 redpolls perched in the scrubby little apple tree near the south end of Tucker (east side). They were feeding on the weeds under the tree, and twittering, when a falcon burst through the tree without catching anybody, and then perched in the top of a tall spruce on the other side of Tucker. The redpolls froze, and were silent and still. I could only make out the wing shape of the falcon - no color. Fifteen minutes later, as I walked down Aiken, I heard the redpolls again, and saw the flock dive into more spruces, followed by the falcon again. This time I did see the tail was clearly striped. The falcon was again unsuccessful, and perched in the top of one of the spruces. I think it was a merlin, but could be talked out of it. We had a nice group of 9 common redpolls at our feeders today. They stayed for about 20 minutes before taking off to the south just a little while ago, perhaps to visit Marie's feeders. I just got a call from Reuben Stolzfus reporting a flock of about 150 Common Redpolls and a dozen Snow Buntings in southern Seneca County. East of 414 and north of 96A on Ovid-Lodi Townline Rd. He did not have binoculars, so worth checking for Hoary Redpoll and Lapland Longspurs in the flock. He eliminated Horned Lark by shape, size and calls of the flock. I saw them there today at 2 pm, as well - maybe 130-40? It was really difficult counting them in the wind! They were about 1/4 mile down from the corner of Tucker and Aiken Roads, on the east side of Tucker, feeding in the brush and vegetation alongside the road. Very easy to see! Great! Wow! A beautiful male Common Redpoll in a late afternoon shaft of sunlight. The deep rose on his throat opened up and faded across his chest, as if he had spilled a bright red wine down his front. In the intense sunshine the red was electric against the white cheeks and chest. I took a couple photos, which I will post tomorrow, but they only hint at the breathtaking experience of it in real life. I still have at least six redpolls still coming to my feeder. I will enjoy them as long as they keep coming. I like redpolls a lot, and I really enjoy them all, even the dull ones. But, uf-dah! they can be gorgeous sometimes. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls (No) and snow buntings, horned larks and lapland longspurs
?Hi All, Yesterday around 1.30 PM I took a spin around to look for Redpolls at Triphammer Terrace and Hillcrest Road in Lansing. I did not see any redpolls. I did not dare to watch the surrounding neighborhoods as it seemed like I would be staring into their houses. So I decided to go look for Snow Buntings and Horned Larks on Mahaney/ Davis Road farm. I did find several hundred Snow Buntings and Horned Larks, but they mostly landed on the plastic covered structure and I don't know what it is called, but were mostly invisible. A few - about hundred or so Horned Larks and Snow Buntings were on the open spot of the mud in the field and mostly about 50 or 60 Horned Larks were sitting on the road. I did find two Lapland Longspurs among these. Birds are still there but mostly not visible unless for some reasons they took off as a flock, which they did it three or four times. On the way back I came via Lake road, but nothing of interest except for a few crows. I again stopped at Hillcrest and Triphammer Terrace road and found not activities in the birches. There was Red-tailed Hawk floating around among the trees and the field. A couple of Redpolls have joined the 40+ Goldfinches at my feeders this morning. They seem to have replaced the two Pine Siskins that were here for a few days. Although I have a feeder devoted to niger, it's not as popular as my big hopper-style feeder, which I keep filled with the Turek Farm (King Ferry) black oil sunflower seed. That stuff contains quite a lot of kernels lacking hulls, which makes things easy for finches with tiny bills. And I throw some niger in the hopper too. The squirrel proof feeder has adjustable spring-loaded perch bars, which I've set to accommodate six or eight small birds but exclude Blue Jays. The location is in Summerhill near the SE corner of Cayuga County, around Lane E in the vicinity of a lake house with thistle socks, tube feeders, and platform feeders and nearby houses also with feeders. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls, woodcock and a very intimidating visitor
After enjoying them all winter our redpoll flock of 200 or more has greatly reduced to but a few. It's high time for them to be starting north. We had a cock pheasant here for a week but it has moved on -probably not enough spillage left by the smaller redpoll numbers. While the redpolls here did consume some nyger, they greatly preferred black-oil sunflower. Michael, have you been feeding both seeds? Our experience with woodcock up here parallels most reports. Over the last 27 years habitat loss has contributed to much lower numbers and locations. This to the point where some of the national woodcock survey routes in our area were dropped a few years ago. Enjoy them while we have them. The highlight yesterday afternoon was our FOY Northern Goshawk. As this was a young female, she was huge! After everyone was writing about their Redpolls, I thought I'd better watch to see if I still had them. I do! I spotted a pair and a few others, I think. The Grackles want to dominate the feeders and the smaller birds find it hard to compete. I spotted a new yard bird yesterday. It was the first Fox Sparrow I've ever seen here. I saw it for only a minute and got a few pictures with its back toward me. I haven't seen it again, unfortunately. Yesterday we had our first REDPOLL in weeks, and today there were two. I joked with Ann Mitchell that yesterday's bird must have been an overflow bird from her flock of 50. I've had Redpolls non-stop through the winter, never less than about 50 in the neighborhood. Although I suspended feeding them niger several times, they stayed and ate black oil sunflower seed. Multiple Fox Sparrows are singing now. Several Song Sparrows this morning. Redpolls continue to come to my feeders in Newfield. There were 10 on April 1 and only 8 that I saw today. Having had none here all winter, it seems odd to have them hanging around for the past week. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls
They're back! With the snow melt and warm temperatures, I've only had a small numbers of my regular birds. I've also continued to have a few Redpolls. Today, I had a large flock of maybe 30. The mixed flock of birds would scare every little while, but a few of the Redpolls would keep feeding while the others spooked. I wonder if they might be the ones that have been here daily. There's no way to tell, however. Another behavior I would like to mention is that of my local juvenile Cooper's Hawk. It had been here two days in a row. The first time it came, it just sat in the weeping pine out front and watched for birds. Not so the next day. That day it landed at the top of the pine, but it kept hopping from branch to branch through out the tree looking for a hidden bird. It was very cool to watch it actively hunting. It went from there to a nearby beech tree and soon left. It didn't catch anything. Yesterday, I thought the surge of finches had disappered with the melting of the snow cover. The niger went virtually untouched. Today, more than 75 redpolls are out to prove me wrong. It is like an anthill out there. There may be well over 75 but it is difficult to count those in the nearby trees and shrubbery. I recall our previous max of 16 redpolls and a little envy of those of you with hundreds. Our 3 tube feeders are full and there are dozens on the ground gobbling up the spilled seeds. I remember a winter in 1961 or so when an irruption of redpolls made it to Long Island. Had to refer to Peterson for an ID. There were no more than a dozen or so and they were very tame. I stood about 3 feet from a feeder and took lots of photos. It is nice to see them again in such numbers. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls are really starting to arrive.
I've had a flock of around 40 redpolls at our feeders for the last week, but this morning was different. I glanced out after light and there were 300+ redpolls at and below the feeders. The birds brought to mind an active bee hive in mid-summer, very cool. Searching through the flock, I found a single bird which was frosty compared with the other 299+ birds with a clean rump and a noticeably shorter bill, I never got a good look at the under tail but from what we could see, there didn't appear to be much or any streaking, which we could see on other birds. While there is certainly a gradation between Common and Hoary, this bird fell on the Hoary side of things A Yard Lifer for me!!! With the influx of Redpolls continuing to mount, I'd encourage everyone to enter their observations into eBird. Since the snows, I've been feeding upwards of 100 Common Redpolls. They gather all around my lone 4-perch Niger feeder, and empty it every day or two, which makes frequent cleaning easier. Remember, crowds of Redpolls are a treat in January, but by February or March we may begin to see them sickening from feeder-born diseases. I can finally join the redpolls finally club, as a flock of 10 or so descended on my paltry feeders in Northeast Ithaca. I've had none in my yard so far and none downtown on the CBC on the 1st -- they seem to finally be entering the more urban areas. My flock of Redpolls continues to grow. I'd guess it's up to 30 by now. Donna called her feeders a mob scene. Mine are like that too. I've got hundreds of birds milling around the feeders at once, so it's very hard to actually count a specific species. I also had two male Bluebirds out on the weeping cherry. I haven't seen any Bluebirds here since early fall. Our redpoll count just doubled from yesterday: we now have TWO. Ta Da! About 17 siskins on niger feeders. When they left, the resident goldfinches returned, about 18 of them. Must be Bill and Shirley are the sharing type, in that we now have a red poll or two at our feeder as well, just up the road outside of Interlaken. Phil and Mary Jean saw two the other day, but today was the first day I saw one, a very nice Christmas present. We had a mockingbird in our orchard on South Hill today. It was having a territorial dispute with a crow. I dont recall seeing them in wintertime. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls still at feeders
I still have a flock of 10-40 redpolls visiting my feeders daily in Ithaca, along with the usual throng of nuthatches, titmice, juncos, sparrows, Purple and House finches, Goldfinches, chickadees, downies, hairies, redbellies, crows, Red-wings, jays, cardinals, doves, etc. I thought the redpolls were decreasing, but I had 33 this morning and 31 yesterday. I've also had a steady stream of Common Redpolls at my feeds for the past 3 weeks with flocks ranging from 10-60 birds. I have seen several possible Hoarys among them, but as Laura so aptly described, they move about too quickly for a positive ID. Redpolls on the tube feeds tend to linger longer, but all the Hoary candidates have been on the ground, silo feeder, and bushes. Hello all, The redpoll flock is up to 60+ at the house in Scott including 1 FEMALE HOARY REDPOLL and 1 Greater Common Redpoll. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls, longspur, old rarities
Kevin and I journeyed up to Summerhill this morning, where we spent a couple of hours watching the big redpoll flock at the feeders on Fire Lane E on Lake Como Road. The flock is still big, at least 200 and probably closer to 300 at times. The are pretty flighty, so we didn't get much to time to watch them actually on the feeders, and the majority of the flock would be absent for long periods of time. The flock often sits in the spruces over the houses for long periods of time as well. Although viewing conditions weren't ideal and the birds were moving around a lot, I was able to find at least one HOARY REDPOLL I was confident of, an immature or female bird with fairly thin side streaking, fading towards the flanks, single thing streak on the undertail, and fairly pale back and nape. I also saw at least two other birds that I suspect were immature or dark female Hoaries, but my looks were not conclusive. None of these birds particularly stood out, though, unlike the bright white male Hoaries we see sometimes and some of the paler females. Andrew Van Norstrand and I observed five different Hoary Redpolls at the Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville near Syracuse on Tuesday (photos towards the end of my winter album: https://picasaweb.google.com/jmcgowan57/Winter20102011#). The viewing is great there, and you can watch the birds come to some very close feeders from inside the building. I highly recommend it if you are in the area. Some of these birds were quite pale and easy to pick out of the relatively small group of redpolls there. On the way up to Summerhill this morning, we saw three flocks of Snow Buntings. A group of several hundred buntings was accompanied by about 30 Horned Larks and at least one LAPLAND LONGSPUR on North Road/CR 163 a bit south of the intersection with Dutcher Road (I think); another group of a couple hundred was in the back of a large manure spread towards the north end of West Malloryville Road; and a couple of dozen with larks were on Salt Road just north of 90. Finally, for those interested in the history of birding in the Cayuga Lake Basin or just rare birds in general, I recently posted a compilation of photos of rare birds that I have taken over the past 11 years in the Basin (unfortunately, I wasn't taking pictures my FIRST 11 years in the Basin.)
