[cayugabirds-l] White-crowned sparrows stop by-just out of basin

Four white-crowned sparrows are dining at our feeders this morning.  It appears 
to be two males and two females, going purely on brightness and a bit of 
behavior (mild aggression between two brightest).

Also a female purple finch, song sparrows, chipping sparrow(s), downy and hairy 
woodpeckers, mourning doves (displacing white-crowns by waddling at them), 
bluejays and a pair of redwinged blackbirds. 
 The female redwing is apparently seriously considering nesting in the iris 
that are tall and abundant in our swimmingpool-converted-to-pond.  This morning 
the male apparent agrees on her choice and was displaying to her amidst the 
iris leaves. She looks young—little color to her face, quite stripy but dull. 
Protection from chipmunk predation will be the problem.

[cayugabirds-l] White-crowned Sparrows at Game Farm

Because of the lack of dorm waste over the Cornell break, there are still no 
gulls (or Fish Crows) to speak of at the Stevenson Road compost facility.  But, 
during my weekly census of tagged American Crows, I was able to find FOUR 
juvenile WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in the American Tree Sparrow flock along the 
entrance road (just past the back gate to the game farm; where the weeds meet 
the trees). I only rarely find an individual of this species before the main 
migration wave hits in May (even though they winter downstate and in 
Pennsylvania), so finding four was a bit of a surprise. Although I think Jay 
and Ken had multiple individuals in December.


Also present along the drive was the continuing leucistic Northern Mockingbird 
with some big white patches on its head, and a couple of very dark Red-tailed 
Hawks. Probably the hypothetical "abietcola" "eastern boreal form," one in 
particular has a very plain dark back with nearly no white spotting on the 
scapulars, and a Rough-legged Hawk-like complete dark belly band. I struggled 
to get some bad digiscoping photos of it perched, and then it flew around and 
around over my head to let me take over 300 SLR shots. I will post some when I 
can coordinate my two computer systems.

northbound flight over Bald Hill Rd. in Danby.

Also, while biking to Ithaca I was surprised to hear a White-crowned Sparrow 
singing in the landscaped intersection between Barnes & Noble and Wegmans.

[cayugabirds-l] White-crowned Sparrows, Lansing

Hi all,
I watched the lake at Myers Point this morning for a couple hours,
ultimately with very little to show for it. Most interesting birds were two
female-type WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off the marina. After that I drove around
eastern Lansing and western Groton for a while, checking for Short-eared
Owls or field birds. Very quiet there too, but I did stumble upon one cool
thing. As I drove on Buck Road approaching the western edge of the
Christmas tree farm just west of Scofield Road, a sparrow flew up off the
road and I recognized the call note as a White-crowned. I pulled over and
pished and watched a sizable group of sparrows appear in the bushed,
including ~3 Song Sparrows, ~6 American Tree Sparrows, a handful of
Dark-eyed Juncos, and an amazing *12* WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, all
juveniles. This would be an impressive number at any time of year, but all
the more so this late in the season, certainly the most I have ever seen in
the winter months. They were giving their high-pitched seep call notes and
foraging along the road and sitting in the bushes. One even gave a few
songs at one point. Very odd!
