Re: [cayugabirds-l] YB Cuckoo

2021-06-09 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
There was a Black-billed Cuckoo singing (multiple triplets closely spaced)
yesterday at 730am at the Lab.
As I got out of the car in the staff lot, the sound was from either the trees
between the drive and second lot (and bird facing away) or further over in the
patch of trees on the other side of the road by second lot, I couldn’t be sure
of range. It was distinct but not super loud.

Had both from home this year, with the gurgle-intro leading into single-note
songs from YBCU both of the last couple evenings just outside our sunroom.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] YB Cuckoo

2021-06-09 Thread John Gregoire
We are still hearing both and the YBCUs have been more vocal these last few
days, the BBCU's more subdued but calling regularly. Perhaps yours are too
busy dining on Gypsy Moth cats.

We have heard very few YBs give the complete call as is common down south
in our experience.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] YB Cuckoo

2021-06-09 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
This is indeed a big year for both cuckoos in our region. It is typical for
their populations to fluctuate greatly, depending on where the outbreaks of
caterpillars are occurring.

On a Breeding Bird Survey route in Yates and Steuben Co. on Sunday, Martha
Fischer and I had 11 Yellow-billed and 7 Black-billed Cuckoos—about 10X our
usual count over the past 25 years. These kinds of fluctuations make it
difficult to track continent wide trends in populations for these species, both
of which have shown long-term declines since 1970.
