I got $186 a couple of years ago for an S/34 and a twinax line printer
from a scrap metals dealer.

I suspect it's a disconnect between owner's visions of them being "IBM
Mainframes" and demanding substantial prices and collectors seeing them as a
backwater of IBM computing and un-interesting and wanting them for free...
The hardware and software is "closed" so there is very little in the way of
software available, the instruction set is I think un-disclosed so no
emulators exist.
I don't think it did TCP/IP only SNA so its hard to connect to other things.
It was largely sold to small commercial businesses and mainly ran RPG so
places where there were no IT skills so not many IT/Computer folks are
interested...
... a friend who ran a tyre and exhaust business had one for Payroll and
stock Control...
When I worked for Marks & Spencer Financial Services we had a couple as RJE
stations onto HASP and MVS and we also used them as a PC server with XT and
AT machines over twinax.

So I think it's the sort of box you stick in a Museum on display.

At some point, doesn't the rarity of it outweigh the rough condition? Or are
34's just not that rare? (or collectable?)

Austin also.

Not sure if that's it or not. I found the guy through eBay, not CraigsList.

Sorry about that. The thing is in Iowa.

That's all I know, other than who's scrapping it 

Thanks!

Even if you do have to take it to a scrap yard (skip this one, he's a
jerk), you can take a System 34 sized system for way less than that.

I recently had a series of cleanouts @ retail prices, and if you pay
more than $150 to do it you are getting ripped. That would be to rent a
U-Haul truck and their retail helpers. I now have two guys I hired thru
Uhaul and in a single day I can move a 400sf storage unit.

Truck would be $29 for the day, (flat rate), and $100 / hr guys max
price. Drive to dump / scrapper, done.

I hope you can let the thing mellow for a while and someone can salvage
the system. Wrong side of the continent for me at that size though.

thanks
jim

We have trouble getting ecyclers to even come here to pick stuff up.

Most of the time I have to drive stuff to Weird Stuff to get rid of it
then they turn their noses up at it when they see they aren't going to
be able to flip it in the store easily.

Not mine, but I have contact details. The scrapper wants $800 for it local
pick up.
