limitations. There are no graphics, only one line of display, no sound,

That sounds like a spindle motor bearing that is going bad. Yes, it
will get worst and the motor will fail to spin up at one point. I
wouldn't use this drive for anything that is important. Remember these
motors don't have a lot of torque.

There is probably hidden damage to the motherboard. The acid will
follow the traces inside the board and consume them. There is no way to
stop this kind of damage. Sorry for the bad news.
