Emil and I also use Brentwood for our regular repairs
and have been happy. We used to just have our old
88 Civic. We didn't buy a fancy sports car but
we now have a 94 Prius.
Anyway we love the Prius except the rear visibility sucks.
I've backed it into things twice. And then it also
got side swiped. For body work, we've been very
happy with the Baltimore Body Shop right there on
Sisson street and the 83 exit ramp. Nice work and
good people. Their motto is Where you meet the nicest
people by accident. http://www.baltimorebodyshop.com/
Geico once sent us to the place that's connected to Anderson
Honda and we weren't happy with them.

[Chat] Free TV/Stereo table

2005-04-21 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Emil and I have upgraded to real wood. Available is an IKEA
low table that you can have your TV sit on. It has a pull
out shelf for a VCR or DVD player and side compartments
for LPs. Yes, it's that old. It is a dark cherry stain
veneer. We figured we'd give Charles Villagers first crack
before we post it on Craig's list or Freecycle.com

[Chat] Foudn Dog

On Memorial Day weekend my neighbors found a little dog.
He looks like a cross between a Chihuahua and a Boston

He is neutered and looks at least middle aged. If anyone
has any information on who this dog might belong to, please
let me know. He looked vaguely familiar to me like I'd

[Chat] Attempted break in

2006-10-13 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Sunday night someone attempted to break into our back second floor
bedroom. Emil was already in bed (about 2:30 AM) but I had gotten
up to check a scheduling problem I thought I might have Monday and
was on the computer in the front second floor room. Emil called to
me asking if I had heard something. I called back that I hadn't.
We chalked it up to noise from next door or out in the alley.

The next day when I pulled up the blinds in the bedroom, a small
flower pot on our outside bedroom windowsill had been moved.
Then I noticed that the screen was pushed up and a plastic
chair on the balcony was moved to be in front of the window
(so someone could stand on it presumably). We did call 311
and they send a couple of officers to come and look. They
were very nice but didn't take a report. They said they'd
make a note to put our house on some sort of special watch
list for a couple of nights.

We don't have stairs from our back 1st floor deck to the second
floor one but the house next door is 3 apartment so they have
connecting steps (required by fire law to have a back exit from every
apartment). I assume the person came up there stairs and climbed
over the rail separating our two decks but was then scared
away when Emil called to me. Very scary. So, be aware and watchful.

I'd guess they hire and train some new waitresses. It's not exactly
a position with a lot of upward mobility so understandably
most people don't want to stay in that kind of job forever.

I'm sure Pete's will continue to be very popular. We'll definitely
still eat there as well. I get the impression that a lot of their
customers come on foot and 27th and Howard is a bit far to be cutting
into that customer base. And the two sisters is a place you
can go with a group and all sit at a table. You can't do that
at Pete's so they are filling a need that Pete's doesn't.
I don't think you have to choose one or the other. We also sometimes
eat at the New Wyman Park Restaurant but they aren't open on the
weekends. Sometimes we go out for breakfast to Carme's, and when
we want to splurge, to Gertrude's. Oh, and to the Thirtea First
Street Cafe too. And there's also the Paper Moon. They all fill
a slightly different breakfast niche for me.

On Dec 22, 2006, at 12:00 PM, Emil Volcheck wrote:

  Hello, neighbors,

Today the Two Sisters Grille opened at 27th and Howard.

Kathleen and I just returned from eating a late breakfast there, and
we were favorably impressed. We had eggs, home fries, blueberry
pancakes, and a waffle. They were all quite tasty and were just as
good as at Pete's Grille. The home fries and blueberry pancakes were
excellent. The service was also fast (probably because there were
  only six customers total).

Two Sisters is open every day of the week from 7 to 7 Sunday
through Thursday, and 7 to 11 Friday and Saturday.
The phone number is (410) 467-0550.

Debbie and Cathy started the Two Sisters Grille. They both worked at
Pete's for about twenty years. A few years ago they had the idea of
starting their own place. About four or five months ago is when they
learned that the Korean bar, 1.7th Generation, would be closing and
that the property would become available. The place still very much
looks like a bar. The restaurant has two levels: a wooden bar up
front, and tables on a raised area in the back. The kitchen is
separate, so you don't get to see the cook working, but then there's
  also less smoke.

The liquor license transferred over with no trouble. They don't
have beer on tap yet but will soon.

Lou (former owner of Pete's) was there today, giving advice and
  teasing them.

  Dialogue overheard:

Lou: How much for one of your mugs?

  Cathy: five dollars.

Lou: five dollars for a mug?

Cathy: It's five dollars for the memories, which are priceless.

Lou: Back at the other place, it was only two-fifty. Oh, wait,
we jacked them up to five too!

  Also overheard:

Lou (to a customer): Excuse me, you can't bus you your
own table. We have waitresses for that. (Looks at Cathy)

We have a great new restaurant in Charles Village. I hope
you get to try it out.

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Spaghetti Disco ?

2007-02-28 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
I think the Charles Villager might have been the only place
it was advertised, that and Chris Jensen's porch window.
But Jensen's sign didn't have the time, just the date.
So, when I couldn't find my CV on Saturday, I had to
make a special trip to Eddie's to get another one.
I tried the VLP website, The CVCA website, The CVCBD website
and none of them had it listed.

And I agree that John Spurrier is a great DJ. My only
suggestion would be a few slow numbers in between
for some cheek to cheek swaying and breath catching.

Boy, Lisa Simione sure can dance. Also Josh and Amber
looked very stunning in a powder blue tuxedo and a
red velour bell bottom jump suit with rhinestones respectively.
Wow! I felt under dressed but a great time all the same.

2007-05-25 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
For the past two evenings we've had a visotor... a nice,
starving, small black female cat with a distinctive light
spot near the tail. She is or was someone's pet --
she has a collar (with no information) on, and loves to
approach people and be pet. She has had her claws removed
-- a sure sign she was never meant to be outside.

You can see a picture of her here:
http://hssl.cs.jhu.edu/~eric/foundcat.jpg

If any of you know anything about this cat, please let me know.

Is that a pink elastic collar? I'm asking because the SPCA
uses those (blue for males and pink for females) and I think
a free collar comes with your adopted cat. The SPCA used to
tattoo animals on the inside of their thigh with a number
but they might have switched to a microchip. You can take
the cat to almost any vet or shelter to have her scanned for
a microchip.

You can post a found cat on the SPCA website.

$.50. This is half price. It is their 24th anniversary
(I think 24 months) so they are celebrating by offering 24
different flavors.

There other location is in the Brown Arcade on Charles street
and I've been there a couple of times but truthfully, not
that often because it's hard to find a parking spot. But now
we have cupcakes in walking distance. My favorite are the
Chocolate Mint.

[Chat] Clarke Peters at the Farmer's Market

2008-08-02 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Hey fellow WIRE fans,

I had heard on a Marc Steiner podcast interview with Clark Peters
that he lived some of the time in Charles Village. Clark Peters
played Detective Lester Freeman on the WIRE. This morning a bit
after 11:30, I saw him strolling through the Farmer's Market
looking very dapper in white linen pants and a white shirt,
accompanied by a woman and boy who was around 10. I'm not
a very good celebrity spotter and lived in LA for 6 years
without spotting a single one. So, now I've finally
spotted someone from a show I watch!

Re: [Chat] floors and kitchens

What is the order-get a new kitchen and appliances then sand
the floors or
sand floors first then get the new kitchen.
Can anyone recommend a reasonable and reputable home improvement
person to rebuild a bathroom

Judy

I think floors are usually done last as the construction
can cause scratching with all the heavy equipment and
appliance moving.

For kitchen and bath remodeling, I'd highly recommend
Courtyard Kitchens.
http://www.courtyardkitchensofhampstead.com/

They are based out in Hampstead but have a lot of
experience remodeling in old rowhouses. They were
originally recommended to me by a friend of a friend
whose kitchen they remodeled in Hampden. They
did our kitchen 2 years ago and were pretty quick
and the quality of work was very good. Also very
professional. Oh, and flexilbe. They were fine
with letting me look for good deals and buy the
appliances, flooring, tiles, lighting, hardware from
wherever I wanted and they installed it. I just had
to buy the cabinets through them.

I do have some beautiful hammered copper accent tile
I ended up not using if anyone is interested. I've
been meaning to put it up on Craig's list but haven't
gotten around to it.

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Bad experience with Papa Johns Pizza

2008-10-01 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Our four favorite places for pizza are:

Fortunato Brothers up by Wells Discount Liquors.
They have a really great white pizza with chopped
garlic tomatoes all over it. They do not deliver.

Bella Roma in Hampden. Good basic pizza although
sometimes a bit slow with the delivery. They were
voted Best of Baltimore by someone or other at
some point which is why we tried them.

I'll also second the vote for Iggie's. This
pizza is fancier with more gourmet type toppings
like goat cheese and caramelized onions. Very
thin style crust. Iggie's pick a different Baltimore
charity every month to support, very community minded.
We haven't tried them but they also sell uncooked pizzas
to take home and bake.

And last but not least, the portabella mushroom
pizza from Harmony at the Waverly Farmer's Market.
Wholewheat crust and lighter on cheese than most,
so healthier but still very tasty. We usually
keep two of their individual pizza's in the freezer for
pizza emergencies. They also have some vegan varieties
without any cheese.

Re: [Chat] Fw: [I-NEIGHBORS] Your Feedback Is Sought Regarding Opening A Local Hardware Store

2009-01-10 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
I shop at Lowe's in Timonium and Bel Air (I go to a vet in Bel Air),
Courtland Hardware in Bel Air,
Home Depot on Perring Parkway, and Falkenhan's in Hampden. When we
first bought our house in 2000, it came with one skeleton key for the
outer front door (it has more substantial locks on the inner front door).
I went to Falkenhan's and they opened a big drawer full of keys,
picked out three likely candidates and told me to bring back
the ones that didn't work (which I did). I also remember a trip
to Home Depot when they couldn't figure out what kind of paint
would be acceptable for painting my radiator. The guy helping
me couldn't seem to grasp the whole radiator concept.

I also buy plants at the Farmer's Market, and Greenfields, and
some gardening supplies at Mill Valley Garden Center next
to the dump on Sisson St. Cheryl, who runs the place, is super
nice.

I would definitely patronize a local hardware store. I shop
at the Giant frequently but the other locations mentioned
would also be OK.

in getting some feedback from you.

You can read more about us by visiting www.acehardwareDC.com but I will
also give you a few tidbits of information.

We are members of the Ace Hardware co-operative which makes us
independently owned and operated yet gives us a larger buying group to
work within. We currently own five stores and try very hard to become a
destination location in each of those neighborhoods. We carry more
than 20,000 items and have access to many, many more. We divide our
stores into the following departments; lawn garden, paint cleaning,
electrical, plumbing, housewares, and hardware. We love to adapt our
products to our neighborhoods' needs and will bring in almost any items
that are requested by our customers.

As we continue to do the research necessary to determine if this
location is a good fit for us, we welcome any comments (both positive
and negative) that you might have.

I'm curious where everyone currently shops for their hardware and
housewares items? Where are you buying things like plant pots, mulch,
etc. Do you think the neighborhood would enjoy having a community
hardware store? Are there still enough renovations going on to sustain
 a large store?

Please feel free to email me at g...@acehardwaredc.com. I look forward
 to hearing from you.

[Chat] Found striped cat

2009-06-25 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach

This morning a small brown/grey striped cat (I think
that is what people call tabby) was meowing incessantly
at my back door (3040 Guilford in Hunter alley). I had
to leave for a couple of hours and when I came back she
(I'm pretty sure the cat is female) was still there.
She seemed confused like she was looking for her house
and wasn't sure which one was her's. The cat is small
and might be an adolescent. If anyone has any guesses
who she might belong to, I'd appreciate any leads.
I can't keep her long because Emil is allergic and
the rabbits are stressed by the constant meowing.

She definitely doesn't fit the description of the two
lost cat flyers I saw around the neighborhood (3-legged
orange or black tuxedo).

I'm one of the people who only subscribe to the chat list. It's
true that the original heated debate about the Benefits District
has abated but I will bet CVers will find something to vigorously
debate in the future. Maybe they'll want to talk about the

than inundated. So, I think maintaining the two list format is
still the way to go.

switched after a couple of bad haircuts at TenPachi. She really cares about her

were struggling in the bad economy. I haven't lost my job so I insist on paying

haircuts before their job interviews. Hey, that's the kind of relationship

I think the more natural ways would be canning and dehydrating.
Plenty of info is available on the internet about both methods.
I've never done either myself but I don't grow my own fruit.
Little fruits like blueberries and raspberries freeze better but
even they are not the same when thawed out. They still work
pretty well for mixing into yogurt or baking into muffins.

Hi, everyone- particularly those in the 2700 block areas of Calvert,
Guilford, and St. Paul. We just returned from a brief trip to the shore and
came home to find our cat, Rosie, (about 3 years old) missing. She has a
chip ID implant, so I am hoping someone will pick her up and have her
checked. But, if you see her, she is a dark tabby cat with splashes of
white on her face, a stubby tail, and a white tummy that sways when she
walks. Most concerning to me is that when we adopted her, she had
previously been declawed, so she has been an indoor cat! If you have seen
her, please let us know. We are very worried.

Kathleen Wilsbach and Emil Volcheck of the 3000 block of Guilford just
returned from a wonderful vacation in Ireland. They were accompanied
by Kathleen's 85 year old mother, Isabel, who lives in Havertown, PA.
The visited the towns in County Cavan where Isabel's parents were born
and grew up before emigrating to Philadelphia in the early 1900's. Her
parents met and then married in Philadelphia where they raised 10 children.
The next part of the trip was visiting Mary, the daughter of Isabel's Uncle Tom.
She lives on the beautiful West Coast in the town of Fenit which is
associated with Saint Brendan, who discovered America before Columbus
(so claim the Irish). Mary was full of stories about family, growing up
on a farm in Cavan, and running a BB in Fenit for many years. We
saw 6 rainbows but the leprachauns are feeling the recession so
unfortunately, no pot of gold.

have a Word document poster I could forward to anyone

-Kathleen Wilsbach

Join the House Rabbit Society for a special holiday showing of the new
family-friendly film
“The Christmas Bunny” (PG-suitable for 6 years+)

http://rabbitsinthehouse.org/?p=765

When: December 10, 2011 at 10 AM

Where: the Rotunda Cinemas, 711 W. 40th St., Baltimore, MD 21211

How much: $8 for adults and $6 for children under 12

The cast: Rumple (the rabbit), Florence Henderson (Brady Bunch),
Sophie Bolan, Madeline Vail

The story: A lonely foster child (Sophie Bolen) finds a lost, injured
rabbit (Rumple) in the woods on Christmas Eve. The rabbit is nursed
back to health by the child under the supervision of the “bunny lady”
(Florence Henderson), who runs a rabbit rescue in an old barn behind
her Michigan farmhouse. Both the rabbit and the young girl learn about
love and belonging.

The buzz:  In early 2011, The Christmas Bunny was awarded the Pearl
Award by the International Family Film Fest.  The Pearl Award is given
to the film that “best exemplifies the purity and enduring strength of
the family bond.”

The end of the movie will contain two public service announcements: one to
promote the fostering/adoption of children who need homes, and the other
to provide info about companion rabbits.

We will also be selling DVDs for $15 at the movie screening and afterwards.

Also, at the screening we will have available the 2012 Missouri HRS

2 items.

As well as the usual movie concessions sold by the theater, we will

cocoa, cider).

Also available for sale will be gifts for rabbits as well as for humans
who love rabbits.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the event, or provide

Re: [Chat] Radiators

2012-01-19 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
I have to disagree with Eric. I love our steam heat. When we had ducts put
in for the central air, we left the radiators right where they were. Although
the air in our house is still somewhat dry during the winter, I'll take steam
over forced air any day. SS!

I do agree that it's a good idea to hire an expert to deal with problems.
When we've had trouble with our radiators, we've had very good service
from Saffer plumbing. Faulty valves do need to be replaced if they're
not working right. Also if the valve near the floor is leaking, it might
need some new lamp wick which works as a sort of gasket.
Sadly we had a leaking radiator that had to be
replaced. Of course, you can't buy new but Saffer tries to keep a stock
of used ones on hand for just such situations. When we first bought our
house, David Saffer was very helpful in explaining the ins and outs of
the steam heating system and giving it an initial tuneup.

In short, it's sort of voodoo and it's best to hire someone to do it, rather

It's really a terrible way to heat a house.

 Is it steam or hotwater?

If hotwater, get a radiator key from the hardware store to turn the
valve.  It costs very little.   Bleed the radiator of the air that has
accumulated.  Have a bowl with you to catch the water that will come out
after the air is drained but before you retighten the valve.  Start with the
 one furthest from the furnace.

 Subject: [Chat] Radiators

Does anyone have experience with steam radiators?  I know they're supposed
to make some noise, but I've got a few that bubble, gurgle, and whistle all
night long and I'd rather not be forced to make the choice between being
warm and getting a good night's sleep.  I've heard that the system may need
to be balanced, but I'm a complete novice to this stuff.

 Thanks,

 Casey

Re: [Chat] inquiry about travel in China

2012-04-19 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Emil and I went 4-5 years ago and did it on our own after a conference
in Beijing. We used a company called Travel China Guide. They planned
our itinerary and had a private guide and driver meet us in each city.
Sounds expensive but it was surprisingly affordable. We went to Xian
(home of the terracotta warriors) Loyang (near the Sholin temple) and
the Longman grotto (Giant buddah's carved into the limestone clifts),
then a boat ride down the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo.
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/guangxi/guilin/li_river.htm

We had a really great time. I can dig up our whole itinerary if
you're interested.
Also, we have some Pimsler Mandarin language CDs that were really helpful.
We listened to them in the car and just knowing that little bit made a
real difference.
We'd be happy to loan them to you.

[Chat] Air conditioner repair

2012-05-29 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Saturday our central AC unit started leaking water and
we had to shut it off. The company that installed it for
us is kind of small. They can't give us a repair appointment
until June 6th. Does anyone have an alternate recommendation
for air conditioner service and repair?

Re: [Chat] Fluid Movement Next weekend (5 7 PM) Patterson Park Rebel Teen from Starship 12

2012-07-30 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
If you didn't manage to see the show this past weekend, you have
another chance. Next weekend there are four shows at the Patterson
Park Pool. We had such a blast (ha, ha, a little spaceship humor)
Emil and I are going to try to see it again next weekend.

PS If you wear your bathing suit, you can jump in the pool after
the show and swim with the stars!

 Hello, neighbors,

Kathleen and I went to the Fluid Movement show
yesterday, and it was great! The costumes were
probably the best we've seen so far. The music
featured David Bowie's Starman, and other music

There are two shows today at 5 and 7 PM in Druid
Hill Park. The show is titled Rebel Teen
from Starship 12 and it's a zany story about
a teenager running away from their starship home
on an adventure. The ending is a twist. Josh
Fruehling is joined by two robots to provide
 MST3K-style commentary throughout the show.

Re: [Chat] Lost cat, be on the lookout

2012-10-08 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
There are several interesting articles on-line about lost cat behavior
with ideas that might help in Floyd's recovery.
Here's one http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recovery-lostcat.php
and google lists several others. I hope Floyd is found and is soon
safe at home again.
