G10 is a great replacement for wooden backer boards. It doesn't even have to be G10 specifically. McMaster-Carr has a wide variety of FRP pieces in various sizes. Since your situation is already partially encapsulated with fiberglass you might just remove the fasteners and old wood. Then

If your boat still has the right sheaves, then wire and rope combination halyards are still a viable option. There is very little stretch and polyester has the best hand in my opinion. No issues to speak of with eye splices either. Also relatively low cost. Steve Thomas C Merritt Island, FL
