Does it always happen at that speed; in other words, does a different
alignment of the prop change anything?

That's fair.
The dampener has a few advantages besides alignment which I'd like to
retain. I have painstakingly aligned the engine so I'm not particularly
concerned about alignment.
TBH it looks like the PO may have replaced the log and left it long. I
don't know what stock looks like. 4.5
Josh, what about loosing the dampener instead? I know you have it, but With a
good alignment you shouldn't need it. I think I would prefer to keep the shaft
log intact, it also keeps / brings the seal a bit forward. I'm wondering if it
adds some sort of support to the shaft. Few years ago when

Hi Neil
No singing on hull #11. We originally had a 2 blade fixed prop, and now
are running a Kiwi Prop.

Thanks Marek,
I agree with almost all of your assessment.
The shaft centering issue is not that it moves around or that I have intent
to install it "off center" but rather that it could be exiting the log not

OK Mark III owners, our C 35-3 "signs" with speeds between about 4.5

able to isolate. We have a 2 blade fixed prop and sail with the
transmission in neutral. I am not complaining, I love it when she goes

When I first bought Windstar, I had a terrible, intermittent BANG - BANG -

many many boat bucks to:

HI All,
Thanks for the comments. There are some things I am definitely going to
check next time out. I don't have a strut, and the noise is random. I had
the prop overhauled in Dec. Not sure if the Max prop blades will stick. I
noticed yesterday that I am going to have to haul out for new bottom
I would keep the shaft log as long as possible. Only cut off the bare
minimum.

I appreciate all the glowing comments. I realize that all good things come

Josh,
I am far from being an expert, but…
- I don’t think there is any issues with having very little of the shaft
“free”. In my boat I have about 1/4” (free). The issue, in my mind, is not how
much is left free after the assembly, but rather, how you can assemble all
pieces together.

The Seadeck installation Paul did looks amazing. Great work, Paul!
I have been using similar products on my other boats, small A-Class
catamarans for many years, starting in 2012. My experience is that quality
products like Seadek, Hydrdoturf, and others last a long time. Some others
do not.
Likely a failing cutlass bearing. I had the same type of thumping noise
when running the engine. Increases and decreases with the throttle input.

I am having trouble visualizing all this, but I am very interested, especially
in the Last Drop seal, I hope you do one of your famous videos.

In the process I'm replacing the shaft, shaft coupling, shaft seal and

Why remove what may be structural adhered and a PIA to put back together.
Clean it up, wiring, hoses and all, in place and put the (presumably aluminium)
tank on one of those square plastic tiles that snap together (West Marine sells
them) to avoid rusting. Can you access the additional drain
When running and it is thumping have someone put their hand on top of the
rudder post. If thumping originates from rudder they will feel it. Another
question. Is it rhythmic or random. Rhythmic connotes running gear. Good
luck.
