I used Gore GFO (http://gfopacking.com) 6 years ago at the suggestion of Maine Cruising site (https://pbase.com/mainecruising/stuffing_box=2). It was easy to do and has worked fine since. I had too much dripping last summer and tightened slightly to slow it down but I think that is the second
No idea what is in mine, but just tightened it yesterday after noticing
about 1 drip every 6-10 seconds while sitting. There was a lot of salt
around it, so it's probably been loose for a while, and the nice clean
bilge has now made it noticeable. Sliding the shaft back to remove

Pete,
I’ve used it — good stuff. I’ve never packed the box myself, but the mechanics
I’ve used use that.
There’s no way to determine the life span of the material — too many factors
like the amount of engine use, RPMs, etc. You should make it a habit to check
for drips on a regular basis.
Hello Listers,
I need to address a leaking stuffing box on my 30-2.
Recently, I found this product - Duramax Ultra.

The brochure sounds like what I need. Anyone using this stuff?

One other thing on packing, for those who do a seasonal haul out. Don't freak
out if there is a fair amount of water coming in around the packing in the
spring, so long as you haven't monkeyed with the stuffing box over the winter.
Give it a day or two before you decide to move the packing nut.

Hi,
I'm about to replace mine as well on my C 29 mk 2. My stuffing is 5/16"
and was surprised it only had two rings of flax. I'm planning on using the
GFO Gore (http://gfopacking.com) as it's supposed to last longer although
more expensive. I'm not sure if 3 rings will fit, but I will attempt to

I've only put 3 rings in before, with the cuts
for each ring equidistant from one another. You should be fine.

Thanks for the replies. What about the sizing question: ¼ vs 3/16 material
for a 1 shaft? What have others used?

Hello,
The stuffing box on my 35 Mk 3 had a steady drip last fall, so I repacked it
recently. According to my callipers, I could use ¼ flax in the gland nut
(1 shaft). This seemed to pack in easily enough, but I was only able to get
three rings in and still have enough threads on the nut.
