Re: Stus-List stainless polish

2015-10-16 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
Joe – If you heated your pulpit up to the temperatures that parts of the grill
get to, it too would likely stain.

Elevated temperatures in SS lead to Chromium Carbide Precipitation – the chrome
has an affinity for carbon, which then becomes chromium carbide, and that
leaves much less chrome to oxidize and protect the surface.

This is why you don’t want to heat SS to bend it or whatever.

Sadly, if you use your grill, it will probably begin to rust again at some
point.

If they used a very rich SS, like Nitronic or something with much more Chrome
and Nickel, you wouldn’t have this problem.

Of course, you wouldn’t have bought the grill in the first place, because of
the price!

I have a Magma too, and really like it.

It doesn’t get all that much use, weather, or salt either.

All,

Last weekend we did a 4 day charter on a Leopard 39 out of Miami. First time
sailing out of Miami, in the Keys, on a charter or a cat!

It was one of the best vacations we ever had, despite a lack of wind much of
the time! Went from Miami to Key Biscayne to Key Largo mostly in the Bay and
then back on the ocean side.

The Leopard is an interesting boat, with all lines lead to clutches and winches
at the helm. One winch is electric. It is surprisingly heavy at 20,000
pounds, and needs 10 knots to sail at a reasonable speed. it was great having
all of the living space on one level. Our boat had a generator, so we A/C on
the hook - a real luxury!

Not a boat I would own on the Chesapeake, but a great charter!

Hi,
Does anyone have any bad experiences with Isotemp SPA water heaters?  I can’t
find any reviews regarding the SPA line of heaters online.  I am planning on
installing either the SPA 25 (6.5 gal) or the SPA 30 (8 gal) on a LF38.    For
some reason, the price only differs by $9, but my main consideration will be
space restrictions.
I plan to locate the water heater either in the usual location, starboard of
the engine, or low in the old starboard berth, which is now halfway converted
into a nav station.

As always any comments are truly welcomed.

The Miami fleet is only eight boats. There were some repairs that were not
done to the standard I would expect, but everything on the boat functioned.
I still don't know where the switch is to the light in the head though.

Put Calypso in the same group of butyl tape after the over drill and epoxy fill
process. For our foredeck hatch which is 33” x 33” we are upgrading to through
bolts as the deck sees more twist and flex around that larger deck opening.

We have reconditioned all three hatches, two are original 1970 A/H, one (the
foredeck) is a A/H added in the early 80’s replacing the wood frame original.
We used Hammerhead for the lens and seal recondition and had a local aerospace
coating company re-anodize the frames. We replaced an opening port in the
cockpit. The white plastic framed port frame failed and allowed water into the
balsa. We used a same sized Lewmar which looks much like the other hatches.

I did ours, and butyl tape worked great. Had to over drill and fill the old
holes yes, also found cracks where the liner and deck met, which were a source
of leaks, so fixed them with G2 Flex (if I remember correctly) which has a bit
of give in it. The new Lewmar’s actually matched the openings better than the
Bomar’s I removed!

Good luck to anyone trying to get parts from Mass Marine.I tried several
years ago to purchase the 1977 C 29 table. After many emails and phone
calls, I was told that they can’t find it, and that the website is not up to
date. They still have the table listed...

Stus-List Moorings charter

2015-10-16 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
All,

Last weekend we did a 4 day charter on a Leopard 39 out of Miami. First
time sailing out of Miami, in the Keys, on a charter or a cat!

It was one of the best vacations we ever had, despite a lack of wind much
of the time! Went from Miami to Key Biscayne to Key Largo mostly in the
Bay and then back on the ocean side.

The Leopard is an interesting boat, with all lines lead to clutches and
winches at the helm. One winch is electric. It is surprisingly heavy at
20,000 pounds, and needs 10 knots to sail at a reasonable speed. it was
great having all of the living space on one level. Our boat had a
generator, so we A/C on the hook - a real luxury!

Not a boat I would own on the Chesapeake, but a great charter!
