Hi Dennis or Paul,

Can someone please take a few PICTURES of the poor 35-II to be scrapped, and
not just debate about a stripe/star? Info please?

Yea, I have a 35-II,and can’t afford to buy any parts right now, but it would
be really nice to see what boat/parts they are talking about, not just a
missing star!

Stus-List Lewmar Hatches

2020-07-01 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Ken, thanks, HMP in Toronto was my first stop. They have a good selection of
C parts and coincidently they were the ones I used for the crazy high trim
kit quote and I trust they don’t mark parts up that far. It’s a Lewmar parts
pricing issue. I found a plastic 37+ holding tank at HMP when my aluminum tank
was a problem so I have faith they know C and even the obscure parts. HMP
had a Lewmar roller screen and trim kit in stock too but it was for the wrong
hatch.
Josh suggested I try a piece of plastic soda bottle under the rubber hinge
piece to shim it up and I may try that option just for fun first, it’s worth a
try. I still have a kit for each size ocean hatch and don’t really want to
install them until I have exhausted the options. Len

Re: Stus-List Marine Fork Lift vs Travel Lift - C 34+ ?

2020-07-01 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
The (relatively few) marina trucks we built while I was at Hyster Company
usually had forks about 12 to 16 feet long and were rated at a load center 48”
out from the face of the forks. But power boats tend to have all the heavy
stuff like tankage, engine, outdrive, etc in the aft end of the boat. Picking
up a 32 foot power boat from the aft end is a pretty straightforward thing to
do, because the center of gravity of the boat is likely in the aft 25% of the
boat.

You have several thousand pounds of keel about 17 feet in front of the transom,
and the center of gravity of a sailboat is, by design, pretty near the center
of the boat. The dry sailed boats around here are generally launched by travel
lift the day before race day.

That said, your marina operator knows his machinery, and he’s liable for any
damage if he drops the boat. YMMV, but be careful.

Folks,

A Marina has offered to try and use their boat fork lift (80,000 lb) to lift
Deja Vu’ off the custom trailer we have - splash her for whatever period of
time we sail and then lift and put back on the trailer. So it’s a “dry
sailing” option if this could work? The Marina operator reports they can lift
up to 25,000 lb boats with this system.

The fork lift would have unobstructed access to the transom of Deja Vu and with
the engine and fuel tank behind the keel I was wondering if the weight/balance
etc this idea would work or not?

Any thoughts or experience from other people who have tried this or had
experience with other boats?

Appreciate your thoughts

I saw them flying around Bert Jabins with those big Taylors, with around a 30
footer - there was carpeting on the forks, but I was wondering - .

Because of the rocker in the hull, it is kind of point loading on the corners
of the inside of the forks(Picking up, back to front). I thought it seemed a
little brutal to the fiberglass skin. If they have some kind or air cushion it
seem like it would work out well.

The original 35 design was called the Redwing 35 and was built by
Hinterhoeller, and was then renamed the C 35 after the company merger - one
of which was Hinterhoeller.
So the mold did not have the Cuthbertson star molded in.
Indeed the Mark II used the same hull mold as a starting point . . . .

Stus-List C 35, Mk 1 &2 Cove Stripe

2020-07-01 Thread schiller via CnC-List
Our Redwing 35 (C 35 Mk1, Hull #7) had a cove stripe but not stars and
daggers.  Of course it also didn't have the port in the galley over the
sink either.  George told me that the none of the first twelve Redwing
35's (on the line at the same time) were the same.  They tried different
little things and all of them.

I miss our Redwing but I sure do like our C 35 Mk 3.

I believe neither the 35-1 or 35-2 have the star and dagger. I believe that I
once read that the 35-1 was one of the first boats designed under the C
umbrella and the star and dagger had not yet been adopted as a distinctive
mark. For the 35-2, I believe C modified the same hull mold they had used
for 35-1 with modifications to the stern. So no star and dagger for it.

Of all the models to not have the cove strip ... oh well thanks anyways. My
search will continue

I guess the only other thing would be the manufacturer’s plate ...

And then I’ll learn they didn’t put those in this model either :-)

I have the same situation at the moment with a seized Phillips head screw at
the base of a lifeline stanchion. I’ve decided to remove the stanchion base
from the boat so that I can apply more aggressive removal tactics. I have a
replacement stanchion—so I don’t care if I destroy the stanchion in the process.

The Mark 1 doesn't have the star and sword. At least my friend's 1973 C
Mk.1 doesn't.

This article says that neither the Mark 1 or 2 have them:
http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/brochures/35foot/35mkii/index2.htm

The major features of the boats are as follow;
-The one feature which sets all MKI and II 35's apart from
all other C models is the absence of the trademark cove
stars at the fore and aft extensions of the cove stripe.

-The MKI did not receive the stars because of time limitations
for the first hull, thus there was no ties to install the
stars on the plug.

-The MKII plug was made off the C 35 MKI hull. The plug
being fibreglass could not (at that time) be modified, by
carving out stars,

My mistake on assuming the 1974 35 was a Mk1, as Don noted the 1974 is a Mk2.
I first looked for the iconic star & sword, but I did not see it. This is why
I check and noted the hull number.I recall seeing only a strait hull line
going forward which ends up by the bow followed by a forward embedded bow
navigation light.

Stus-List Backstay adjustment downwind

2020-07-01 Thread Rob Ball via CnC-List
Hi there,
We proved conclusively that the tighter the forestay upwind, the faster you go
. . . . unfortunately, since at some point you break something or the boat . .
. . .
Downwind, you can't get the spinnaker too far forward - in other words, the
looser the backstay the better - gets the sail out away from the main . . . .

Re: Stus-List Backstay adjustment downwind

2020-07-01 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
We ease the backstay nearly all the way for downwind racing. IMHO, it's
not a critical adjustment. We even went so far as to pull the masthead
forward with the genoa halyard. Now we just ease the adjuster pretty much
all the way and focus on the vang, outhaul and position of the pole end
(about 6 inches aft of parallel to the boom).

The best thing for downwind racing is an instrument system that will show
you wind based VMG. Maximize VMG and your results will improve.

Stus-List Marine Fork Lift vs Travel Lift - C 34+ ?

2020-07-01 Thread Stephen Thorne via CnC-List
Folks,

A Marina has offered to try and use their boat fork lift (80,000 lb) to
lift Deja Vu’ off the custom trailer we have - splash her for whatever
period of time we sail and then lift and put back on the trailer. So it’s
a “dry sailing” option if this could work? The Marina operator reports
they can lift up to 25,000 lb boats with this system.

The fork lift would have unobstructed access to the transom of Deja Vu and
with the engine and fuel tank behind the keel I was wondering if the
weight/balance etc this idea would work or not?

Any thoughts or experience from other people who have tried this or had
experience with other boats?

Appreciate your thoughts
