Good day,
In the process of doing some much needed engine upkeep on a 3HM35 and I
found the heat exchanger case has some corrosion around the front seal and
may not reseal or at least not for very long. There is quite a bit of
additional corrosion around the front of the same case. The local
Keep and eye on ebay. You can find lots of used parts for the 3HM.
A machinist will probably have ideas about how to get yours to seal. After
exhausting professional options, I'd try employing JB Weld epoxy putty. You
could manufacturer a flat plate to bolt or press in place of the end bell.
Hi Jacob
To second what Josh said. I repaired a SB8 Yanmar cooling system with JB
weld 6 or 7 years ago. It is still holding with no leaks.

Jacob,
Like Josh suggested, a good machine shop can probably help. Failing that,
I'd take the exchanger to a good radiator shop.
I had corrosion and leakage on the sealing surface of a side plate of the
Atomic 4 that was in Touche' when I bought it. Repaired it with JB Weld
and a flat file.
Thanks for the great advice folks… Butyl tape (and nothing else) it is!

Agree with everyone on butyl tape. Also I suggest countersinking the holes
slightly to give a small shoulder area where the butyl can sit around the
boat. Put the bolts through the base of the winch and wrap them with a
small rolled snake of tape right where they come through. You can also put
I mentioned a while back I was planning on replacing my old Barient primary
winches…. well I’ve got a pair of new Harken 46 ST’s ready to go. I’ve removed
the old winches, sealed the old holes, have starboard backing plates (probably
overkill) and I'm ready to go.
Wondering what you folks
I'd use good quality Butyl Tape, around the bolts and in the bolt holes.

Butyl is by far the best option. Removal of winch in future will be far easier.
Butyl is an excellent sealant. There is no reason to overdo the sealing here
anyway. Leaks drip down to bilge without adversely affecting anything.

You might find grooves in the base of the winch which should be kept clear
of butyl to allow water to drain out of the body of the winch. Otherwise
water pools up to, maybe, the level of the lower gear sets.
