I replaced my fresh water piping with PEX last winter. Original fittings were
cracking and piping had flavor to it. Fittings were all press on plastic by
Watts Aqualock available through www.freshwatersystems.com
. No special tools required, Also replaced
pump and galley faucet as old ones were 40 plus years old. Biggest issues were:

1. defining the correct fittings to fit in cramped spaces
2. removing galley sink to gain access under – lots of boat yoga and
inaccessible rusted fittings
3. cutting piping to correct length as is not very flexible especially
when colder

Overall came out very well and no leaks

I replaced all of my freshwater plumbing with Whale Systems 15mm tubing.  I
chose Whale because their literature stated that their system was meant to be
installed in places that moved - boats, RV's and that their connectors were
meant to have 90° curves right out of a connector.  The original Grey polybutal
had developed cracks which let in air...keeping water from making it to the
pump. The Whale system worked ok...I did have some issues sorting some
connectors.   While replacing the hoses I took the opportunity to pull the
water tanks, replace the fill and overflow hoses.  Also rebuilt the manifold.
Project turned out great :-)$0.02Spencer Johnson ..former owner84 LF 38 #165

I used PEX to install a pH adjustment tank for our house water. It was really
easy. Sharkbite fittings are really easy to attach even for copper to pex
junctions and have so far worked flawlessly. I haven’t soldered pipe since I
discovered them. Dave

My daughter just dodged a bullet due to PEX plumbing. The garage at her house
was converted by a previous owner to a studio Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)
that she rents out long term. Whoever did the conversion plumbed the unit with
PEX.

This past weekend we had an Arctic air mass sag down into Denver. The
temperature dropped 45℉ in 18 hours overnight Friday, bottoming out at -13℉
Saturday morning at 6am. The subzero lows and single-digit highs lasted three
more days.

The cold water supply line to the washing machine and hot water heater in the
ADU froze somewhere. On Monday I put some space heaters in strategic
locations. Yesterday afternoon the freeze thawed and hot water started flowing
again. And, here’s the best part: no sign of leakage. Since PEX can expand a
bit, it’s less prone to cracking when frozen than copper. Otherwise it would
have been a bigger mess and a bigger job.

I’ve never used PEX because I don’t know how, and I don’t have the tools.
Whereas I’ve sweat-soldered plenty of copper. But I’m starting to become a
believer. My travel trailer has all PEX plumbing.

Not that the above anecdote is all that relevant to plumbing in a boat - if
things freeze in a boat, you’ve got potentially bigger problems, like cracked
castings. But I thought I’d share anyway.

At least the boat has a roll-up genoa now. As a single or short-handed cruiser,
I would never be taking either sail on or off, they would stay until I could
hire 4 guys to come move them. Even then, without electric winches that boat
would be a handful. The wheel location and submarine interior argue very hard
against selling the boat to a cruising family. I don’t get how you are supposed
to steer comfortably.

If I could afford it (hahaha), I would redo the cockpit layout and doghouse
cabin totally with a taller cabin, big ports to let some light in, and move the
wheel aft.

I once worked on a 90+ foot sloop that the owner would single-hand, it was a
really nice boat as long as the electric winches stayed working.

10 foot draft, eight steps down the companionway ladder, the sails

be pretty fit to handle the loads.  Probably need a team to carry one
sail from the car to the boat.  The view from inside the boat is
probably dark and only cabinetry.  You can't see the deck or the water
from inside the boat.
