You're welcome. That was fun to do, they are an interesting set of boats,
with interesting owners and remarkable history over the years.

I received an email today from Bill Blodgett, who sailed the C 62 *Pegaso*
around the world with his wife Alicia, 47 countries and 45,000 miles.

He said something about *Pegaso* that was very to the point, so I asked him
if I could quote hie and he said "For sure". I made it the closing line in
the article (just edited in a few minutes ago):

"My tribute to *Pegaso* is she carried its two different Mom and Pop
owners around the world safely and comfortably, while averaging 200 miles a
day crossing the Pacific. "

Oh, wow! I just read farther in the article on Mike Lund, the skier that
used the C 61 Joli for drug smuggling. It mentions he was living with a
lady named Pat Karnik. I know/knew her.

Years ago, my ski buddy owned an outfitting shop in Baton Rouge. He built
a new building and installed a ski deck. Essentially a big loop of carpet
on a slope that moved and became a ski slope. It was used as a ski school
to promote skiing and sell his ski trips.

He hired Pat Karnik to start the ski school and train the instructors. I
was one of the first instructors eventually becoming the lead instructor
many years after Ms. Karnik moved on. The last I heard of her she was the
ski Ambassador for Grand Targhee, WY. Small world.

Hi Tom,

I knew about the Yachtworld listing for Pegaso but it was so depressing to
see I didn't include it in my article. I was in touch with one of the
couples that sailed her around the world. The following is part of her
reply:

Hi Ken

We were thrilled to get your letter and hear of your interest in the C

We donated Pegaso to a charity in the northeast that trained at-risk
youngsters in boat maintenance around 2000. Recently I got an email from a
young couple who found the derelict hull in a boat yard. Pegaso has been
stripped and left to rot. They fell in love with the beauty of what was
left and their dream is to buy what's left of her and rebuild to
circumnavigate. It is heartbreaking for Pegaso was a spectacular boat--an
incredibly comfortable sailing boat. I always felt safe and wrapped in
loving arms when underway. Even though we had a few harrowing passages,
after all was said and done, we would look back on the passage and say
"that wasn't as bad as we thought thanks to Pegaso"

Pegaso was built by Jorge (a Mexican businessman) and his wife Herta (a
German). They designed her to sail around the world alone with no crew and
so had a backup for everything on board. Jorge even said they had a double
hull. They rented a place near the boat yard thinking it was going to be
one year to build but ended up being two years and double the estimate.
Jorge said the final bill was one million. But they did circumnavigate for
3 years I think. And Pegaso was our dream boat and easy to handle for the
2 of us also.

After receiving your email I got curious about Jorge and I think I found
his obit online.

All the best, Alicia

A sad end to a great story. Pretty well the only thing left of Third Wave is
the keel which is still at Shining Waters, probably to be sold as scrap

spring.

Just a side note you may find interesting; the final owner did not like the
three yellow "waves" and had them removed before he launched her for the

Some time ago I had actually known Hans Fogh had owned the Third Wave but I
had forgotten all about it. When I saw Hans Fogh's name on the Factory
Invoice it certainly rang a bell, so I searched again for my original
source but I couldn't find what that may have been years back.

I confirmed it with Han's son, who was also kind enough to send me the old
photos from when she was "Landed Immigrant II".

Stus-List Some Saturday morning reading.

2018-03-10 Thread robert via CnC-List
I estimate the time TW was launched to the time we got aboard (I boarded
with the contractor) maybe 25 minutes.so if someone can do the
calculation with a 1" hole with water being forced in, that is how much
water entered the boat.

I am surprised that this wasn't detected on launch.  Our boats are on
cradles that get lowered into the water on a marine railway.the yard
staff usually submerge the hull until all thru hulls are underway but
not enough for the boat to move on the cradlethen someone goes below
(owner in my case, yard staff or contractor) and checks everything out,
specifically the thru hulls to ensure something like this does not
happen.  If there is a problem detected, they can pull the boat without
lining it up on the cradle.

Never happened in this case!

One year when we were launching AZURA, the boat was submerged but not
yet floating off the cradle.that's when I start the engine and check
the thru hullswhen I come back up, yard staff tell me to stop the
engineno water coming out...boat hauled back out...check thru hull
intake for blockageall clear...in-take hose is transparent and looks
clear.back in the waterstart engineno water...shut it down.
Yard manager getting frustrated with mestart engine third time, no
water.take a hard look into the engine compartmentraw water
strainer still has antifreeze in ithmmm, think...reached in and
tighten the two wing nuts on the cap of the raw water strainer.it
was sucking in air and not water.   I didn't tighten it in the Fall when
I drained it and filled with antifreeze.

Great readthank you.  I had no idea the boat was first owned
by Hans Fogh.I always thought it was Clarence WurtsHal and
Steve never mentioned the boat's original pedigree and Fogh as its
first owner.

Here's another 'The Third Wave' story.the Davies (Steve in
this instance) had a local contractor ready the boat for Spring
launchit was usually one of the last boats hauled in the Fall
and one of the first launched in the Spring.  Immediately after
launch, the contractor (we won't mention his name) brought the
boat to a side wharf where easy access to the boat was required
for some maintenancehe tied up and left the boat
unattendednot unusual.
My boat was still on the cradle approx. 75 feet to the west with
TW's bow facing me.I was sitting in my cockpit taking a break
from waxing enjoying an adult beverage when I noticed the bow of
Third Wave down a bitno big dealmaybe the V-berth was
loaded with sails...but a few minutes later, I noticed the yellow
boot stripe was below the waterline.now that didn't seem right.
I climbed down, went over to TW and there was no one on board.  I
thought about going aboard to check it out but I saw the
contractor's van and immediately ran to ithe was inside doing
some paper work and I told him TW's bow was sinking.he ran to
the boat and realized he had not installed either the speed
impeller or the plug so water was flowing in. By the time he got
one installed, the floor boards were underwater.

It could have been really ugly.

Wow. I’m surprised the water didn’t rush in even faster than you described.

Ken:

Great readthank you. I had no idea the boat was first owned by Hans
Fogh.I always thought it was Clarence WurtsHal and Steve never
mentioned the boat's original pedigree and Fogh as its first owner.

Here's another 'The Third Wave' story.the Davies (Steve in this instance)
had a local contractor ready the boat for Spring launchit was usually one
of the last boats hauled in the Fall and one of the first launched in the
Spring. Immediately after launch, the contractor (we won't mention his name)
brought the boat to a side wharf where easy access to the boat was required for
some maintenancehe tied up and left the boat unattendednot unusual.
My boat was still on the cradle approx. 75 feet to the west with TW's bow
facing me.I was sitting in my cockpit taking a break from waxing enjoying
an adult beverage when I noticed the bow of Third Wave down a bitno big
dealmaybe the V-berth was loaded with sails...but a few minutes later, I
noticed the yellow boot stripe was below the waterline.now that didn't seem
right.
I climbed down, went over to TW and there was no one on board. I thought about
going aboard to check it out but I saw the contractor's van and immediately ran
to ithe was inside doing some paper work and I told him TW's bow was
sinking.he ran to the boat and realized he had not installed either the
speed impeller or the plug so water was flowing in. By the time he got one
installed, the floor boards were underwater.

It could have been really ugly.

Here is us passing Third Wave. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

OK, he just passed us, but our kite looks better.
