Richard;

Looks like you will get a visit from Florence as well. The forecast is for it
to move west across South Carolina, north across Tennessee and Kentucky, and
then up the Ohio Valley. Good news is it will be mostly rain by then.

We apologize for sharing the “wealth” of Florence with you.

I second Fred's wishes...; here in the Ohio valley we are still dealing with
the remnants of Gordon; the Ohio River rose fifteen feet last Sunday and we had
to move all of our "stuff" from our cottage; plus I had to move the boat to a
floating dock some 30 miles away! While that is significant, it pales alongside
dealing with a full on hurricane. Stay safe!

Stus-List Storm Florence

2018-09-12 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List

John

This may help. I lived in Miami for 20 years and
saw some pretty crazy stuff, like sailboats a
block from the bay leaning vertical up against
lamp posts. and a 50 ft trawler about 1/2 mile inland.

Storm surges in areas with stationary docks
instead of floating ones like we have here in
Washington state can be a real problem.

I hope this article helps -->

Ugh...  Good luck Mark!
I hope you are as fortunate as us last with Irma.  We did a lot of preparation,
and as it was bearing down on us we move to safer ground.  We were resigning
ourselves to losing the boat and sustaining significant damage to the house.
In the end the storm moved inland earlier than anticipated and depowered,
leaving us essentially unscathed.
When that was happening the one thing I regretted most was potentially losing
Astralis.

Hey Jim,

Good to hear Edge #1 is ready as well!

I'm anchoring out in Blounts Bay. I suspect I'll be the only one there
since there isn't a lot of wind protection. Most boats in Broad Creek
will anchor 100 yards from the docks in the creek. I did it once on the
35MkII and ended up with a bent rudder. Not enough water in the creek
when the wind shifts. You also need to watch for boats that throw out a
lunch hook.

Good luck to you, Rick, & Tex.

Re: Stus-List Storm Florence

2018-09-10 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Mark;

You might want to take a peek into Blount's Creek when you get to the area.

I just sent a boater off the Washington Docks to anchor up in the creek near
Cotton Patch Landing, and he told me that the anchorage near the mouth of
the creek, below the bridge, was entirely open about 6PM today.

The entrance into the creek is narrow and about 16' deep, with a 90 degree
corner into the creek and the anchorage. Once you make the corner into the
creek you should find about 19' with swing room for 3 or 4 boats, and that
part of the creek is almost completely surrounded by hills, trees, and
houses. So little or no wind and waves, just storm surge.

I agree with you about Broad Creek. I find the best spot to anchor is in the
corner across from the country club, tucked into the corner north of the
Plantation docks. Imzadi has rode out 4 storms in that area. But the whole
creek can become a bumper boat event when McCotters clears the boats off
their docks.

Good Luck.

This one is not going to be good. The eye is projected to come inland 10
miles south of our house (living on an island is great 11 months out of
the year). We boarded up today and I told the wife if there is anything
you want to see again, pack it up. We're heading up to Washington NC
tomorrow to anchor the boat out. We're setting the 35lb CQR with 150'
chain and snubber and a 50 lb danforth in the Pamlico River in 12 feet
of water.

Most NC storms do a late track to the north which would impact the boat
as much as the house. Hopefully, this will stay the course and spare the
boat (priorities!).

Mark,

I feel your pain. I've got one boat in the water (C) and one on the hard
(my new Bavaria). Not sure we'll have time to haul the C before the storm
hits. Lots of folks want to haul and there's only so much time during the
day.

Take good care of your boat. A wise old friend once told me: "If we lose
the house, we can live on the boat, but if we lose the boat I can't race the
house next weekend!"
