I am with Josh on this one. I find that the sun does a great job of keeping my
decks white. I keep some Scrubbing Bubbles on board, bur rarely use it. Given
time, the sun will bleach most stains, shoe marks, etc. I use the cleaner for
stuff that accumulates in the spring from trees and in the cockpit drains and
places the sun tends not to get to. During the summer at the mooring, I rarely
need it. Dave

I have been very successful with a scrub brush and garden hose nozzle. We run
public sailing charters so keeping the boat clean is a pretty high priority.
Between the the birds and the pollen I'm down there everyday before the first
customer arrives. I pre-wet the deck all over and then circle back and spray
clean. That which needs a little more gets the brush. I'm a mix of OEM
gel-coat and kiwi grip. If a detergent is absolutely necessary I tend towards
simple green. If stain fighting is a must I'll turn to straight but judicious
bleach. We had a customer spill red wine all over some control lines,
gel-coat, and kiwi grip. We rinsed it promptly but a very large purple stain
persisted. They were excruciatingly apologetic but I told them that the birds
stain the boat all the time and that they shouldn't worry about it. By the
following weekend all traces of the stain had been bleached out by the sun with
absolutely no additional effort or environmental impact on my part. Yes
various cleaners may get the deck an additional bit cleaner than water and
scrubbing but in a matter of days the elements bring it right back to baseline.

I do suggest considering the use of wood's wax. If nothing else it leaves a
nice touch to the surfaces which then also seem to not chalk as much. It is
supposed to protect and make cleaning easier though I haven't had a side by
side control boat for scientific evaluation.

I used Dawn (green) this week simply because the stuff our club buys has
run out (they buy a 45g drum for $800, it is enviro safe and *very*
effective and concentrated, like one tsp in a bucket is plenty). The Dawn
seemed to work fairly well, but definitely not as concentrated as the good
stuff. The drum is gone, so I don't know what it's called. My deck and hull
are painted, and I've found if I use anything stronger like Spray 9 or
Simple Green, it will leave streaks on the red hull paint.

Stus-List Favorite deck cleaner/recipe?

2020-05-22 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi David,

How about your boat's deck self-bleaching / cleaning every time it rains?

That's pretty much where mine is these days. I give it a bleach / Woody's
wax in the spring and another one in the fall. Beyond that I rinse the
deck once a month or two and clean the black streaks every month or two,
they are very light and that takes about 20 minutes all together using Star
Bright Streak remover. That's it.

How's that possible?

I've been doing a pretty heavy handed application of Comet / Bartender's
friend powdered bleach scrubbed in with coarse scrub brushes 2 or 3 times a
year since I got the boat 8 years ago.

This was not done on purpose but the bleach seems to have worked it's way
into the somewhat porous original gelcoat substrate of the deck, and now
every time it rains, some bleach oozes back out and the combination with
southern sunshine bleaches the works for me :-)

I also do a finish clean / wax using Woody's Wax products twice a year
right after I'm done bleaching. Not sure if it's the combination or the
bleach itself but it works.

This year we had a pretty heavy deposit of yellow pollen and it got stuck
under my steering assembly / on the cockpit sub-floor and the drainage
created a noticeable yellow streak on my stern. I worked on the boat last
weekend and serviced the steering system / cleaned everything in the area
but didn't have enough time to address the yellow streaks. Similarly, I had
enough time to quickly rinse off the deck / remove tree crud and pollen but
not enough to bleach it.

I was planning on bleaching this weekend but when I went to practice my
racing crew on Tuesday night I found the that the yellow streak was gone
and most of the deck is Lilly white pristine! Best I can surmise the heavy
rains from Sunday / Monday night and bright sunshine during the day
bleached it from me. Go figure. All it needs now is a few touches of
bleach + The regular Woody's wax and we're good to go 'till October :-)

Good luck with the project!

Best Regards,

Elbow that is. LOL
I use a small electric, low pressure washer, set on med fan. 99% come up. A
white cleaning pad and small scrub brush for stubborn areas. Very seldom do I
use a cleaner. I do this 4 times a year. Brush and hose routinely.
Cleaner wax twice a year on deck and hull.
