yes several people have described the same symptoms and they were hacked.
try your root password as all caps, all caps backwards and reversed

I am currently having telnet and su problems on a
Raq3...i can't seem to telnet in as any user - Raq
responds with incorrect password.
The only way I can get access to the machine is if I
use SSH but even then the su command doesn't let me
switch to root - same error, incorrect password.
