Usually I don't expect much when I check out Brush Hollow Reservoir this
time of year because of the heavy use by fishermen. Early this morning,
however, I was amazed to find a basic RED-THROATED LOON out in the middle of
the res. just off the boat launching ramp. I was able to get some

Again, hot and slow today - and hoping for a weather change. 34 new
birds banded by Brian Gibbons (Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory), and S
Brown (volunteer). A few good birds had arrived, but it seemed like
many resident birds today. Banding is scheduled to continue
While doing a Big Day today Bill Kaempfer, John Vanderpoel, Gary
Matthews and Todd Deininger spotted a Neotropic Cormorant on a sand
spit on the east side of Lower Latham Reservoir. There is a oil
gas road (no trespassing) off Weld Co 47 Rd that leads to the spit.
The bird is visible
On the 15th I biked the Picketwire Canyon trail south of La Junta. Birds
were mostly as expected with Black-throated Sparrows where the Wither's
Canyon trail joins the main trail and fair numbers of Brewer's Sparrows and
loads of Lark Sparrows along the ride. I also had Rufous-crowned Sparrow at

? A family group of 6 White-winged Crossbills ( 2 adult males , 2 adult
females and?2 immatures? ) were seen around the Visitors Center on the Grand
Mesa , Delta County . They were associating with Red Crossbills ( probably type
5 but they did not call ) and dozens of Pine
