Even with waves of snow and a cold spring wind, high temp in low 40's for
Cortez, it was a good day to be out birding in Southwest Colorado.
Dolores County-Pond at County Road 4 M - Wilson's Phalarope. (Yesterday
there were 4 Avocets!! and 23 Long-billed Dowitchers at 4 M.) Ferris

On Thursday I arrived to the HawkWatch site by 9:05. Visibility was
extremely limited because of the low lying clouds. It began to snow and by
9:42 I headed back down to my car to wait it out. I was back on the ridge
by 11:30 with high hopes of seeing great numbers of migrating hawks emerging
I stopped this morning on my way west to check the shoreline at Clover Basin
Res.

Birders,
Duane Nelson found an adult male PURPLE MARTIN along the west shore of
Neegronda this morning. It was still there flying around @ 11:10 am.
Many of the same birds reported yesterday in the Lamar area were still here
this morning. No new migrant passerines at all at places like the
Results of Saturday 5/1/10 banding at Clear Springs Ranch
Despite weatherman predictions, it was a nice morning :)

It looks like a few migrants are starting to make there way through. This
morning in our suburban backyard we had House Wren, 6 White-crowned Sparrows,
Lincoln Sparrow, Lazuli Bunting, Pine Siskens, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, and a
thirsty Hermit Thrush. Our first Black-chinned Hummingbird
At Castlewood Canyon State Park today a group of Denver Audubon Master
Birder class members, in the midst of our obligatory stop at Mrs. Mouse's
Outhouse, watched a Broad-winged Hawk fly from Cherry Creek toward the westside
cliff, and then north along the cliff.

Nice morning at Chico Basin Ranch, calm, cool, clear, and even a few birds.
We'd only captured one bird until 9:00, then many moved in, with a good
diversity as well.
Seen in the grove - FOS Bullock's Oriole, flock of Cedar Waxwings,
Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped

I'm recording birdhouse data at the USAFA for my 20th year in 2010, and already
have active nests as of May Day! Today there were five White-breasted and two
Pygmy Nuthatch nests with eggs, and 4-5 more that look ready to receive eggs.

( Colorado Springs ) as the remnants of the Aiken Audubon trip

Hello, Birders.
Bryan Patrick and I checked out a few Boulder County sites earlier today,
Saturday, May 1st. Nothing of great note, but here are a few odds and ends:
Walden Ponds. 1 Wood Duck, Ospreys at a brand-new nest, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 6
swallow species, 6 House Wrens, 1 American
Weld County birding (Becca, Kristen, Jen and me) from Wellington SWA
to Loloff Reservoir (and in between).
Total of 71 species--Cozzen Lake active
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 (eating European Starling outside my window at
home)
Great-tailed Grackle - lots (Wellington SWA; Loloff; Latham; Beebe;
WCR
Yesterday 4/30, about 4 PM, I discovered a Broad-winged Hawk being mobbed
by several Magpies in a small willow along the main Park road near the
new SUV campground in Chatfield. It escaped with the Magpies chasing it
into low pine trees. Perhaps, it did not survive.

Today Michelle and I birded around the Cattail Chorus Natural Area in
Fort Collins. We saw a few migrants with the most abundant being
Yellow-rumped Warbler’s. Other birds seen were:

Barn Swallow

About noon May Day, over 225 White-faced Ibis landed at Beebe Draw along
RD 42 west of Rd 47, Weld County. There were about 20 Willet, 6 Wilson's
Phalaropes, at least 25 Great-tailed Grackles, and 9 Marbled Godwits there
too.

have now returned.

Sandhill Crane-1 in meadow behind reservoir (south side). Very late
straggler headed north? This
Friday was a good day (14 banded; 2 returns from prior years); Saturday was
slow (5 banded). We are catching most of our birds in just a few nets where
the bushes have leafed out and/or are flowering. Most foliage just
beginning to sprout leaves.
We caught one new species for the banding
Meredith Anderson and I saw a Broad-winged Hawk today at 8 rd and
VVrd just northeast of Thurston Reservoir in Prowers County on our way
down to Lamar this afternoon.
