This is the Rare Bird Alert, Friday, April 17 sponsored by Denver Field
Ornithologists and the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory.
Highlight species include: (* indicates new information on this species).
BRANT (Rio Grande)
Long-tailed Duck (Larimer)
Many of the species mentioned by Doug Kibbe were also found at Hildebrand
Ranch Open Space yesterday morning (minus the swallows). A highlight was a
McCown's Longspur along the margin of the park's short entrance road. I
made a short stop there again at the end of the day, but the area had very
As many of you know, spring snowfalls create conditions that often result in
concentration of migrants along the foothills.
Yesterday (and I suspect today) such conditions existed in Chatfield State
Park. A partial list of yesterday's sightings include: hundreds of swallows
(mostly Tree),
This morning Steve Stachowiak and I located two McCown’s Longspurs (1f, 1
molting male) and exactly two Chestnut-collared Longspurs (again 1 female
and one molting male). All four birds were with Horned Larks, a couple
Savannah Sparrows and LOTS of Vesper Sparrows at the Model Airplane
Continuing the thread started by Doug, and continued by David and Joey, I went
out east of Fort Collins hoping to see how birds were coping with this weather.
Not enough sticking snow to really force small birds already here out onto
roads or odd situations like parking lots, as has been the
California Condor is not currently on the state list.

Hi cobirders, I went with the Tuesday birders to Belmar Park and only went to
the lake and east side viewing area. The island was very active with over 20
Double-crested Cormorants most on nests in the big tree. Altogether I saw 16
species. New for me for the year were 5 Great Blue Herons,
Hi all,
Since shorebirds are hard to find usually at Pueblo Reservoir, I was quite
surprised to see the following this morning: 15 American Avocets, 8 Greater
Yellowlegs, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Least Sandpipers, 1 Baird's Sandpiper, 4
Wilson's Snipe, and Killdeer. All of these except the
In Sept 2014 the ABA loosened its rules about counting a California Condor.

The key question whether to count a California Condor, assuming you follow
ABA rules, seems to be, Does this bird belong to a condor population that

After a quick unsuccessful look for the longspurs reported by Steve and Joey
(all the other birds were there- bluebirds, sparrows, pipits), I popped over to
the prairie dog town to check for burrowing owls. No luck on those, but the
consolation prize is 22 long-billed curlews, semi-hidden in
Had a fun day a Chatfield State Park today! Saw more Mountain Bluebirds
than I've ever seen out there. So pretty!! Tons of miscellaneous
sparrows and I also spotted an Osprey near the Fox Run parking lot and also
on the wing near the marina. So happy to have this birding spot 5 minutes

Brandon Percival posted at WSBN that the bird in question is not countable
since it was released from the San Diego Zoo two years ago.

All,
The ABA Rules Statement below has two parts. There is an “or” and not an “and”
connecting the two parts of the rule statement so the way I interpret it, the
California Condor from SW Colorado meets the criteria about the established
population of California Condors on Vermillion
Hi all,
We had a great experience at the Moose Visitor Center today:

Presumably the heavy snow combined with migration resulted in the show.

Hi all,
A friend of mine just posted this note on facebook with a picture, and I
just had to post to the group to see if anyone can offer an explanation.
(My friend) and I were driving over Cameron Pass today (4/17) in a gnarly
snowstorm. There was a couple feet of fresh, wet snow.
Dear Cobirds:
The CBRC does not have a stated policy on how it handles introduced (or in
this case reintroduced) species. In the case of Condor N8, however, I
believe this is clearly a case of a bird that is not a countable species
on the Colorado state list. N8 was hatched in captivity and
Birders,
Strong north winds have grounded arriving Piping Plovers, but three
additional individuals arrived at John Martin Reservoir this afternoon. Our
statewide count now stands at five. If you want to see these birds, contact
me, and I'll try to help.
