I put up a few of the pics I managed to get of Worm-eater. Forgive me for
the blurriness, I had to stand on tip-toes while manually focusing.

This evening under oddly blue skies, a male Blackpoll Warbler was in the

I set my alarm for 4 am yesterday (5/18), planning and prepared to head out
early to Elbert. But when I woke up to a steady rain, my intentions washed
away...back to bed. I did have a male *Rose-breasted Grosbeak* singing
across the street from my house early in the day, which I'd have missed if

David Wade was nice enough to let me know about his Worm-eating Warbler at
McMurry NA in Fort Collins this morning. I got over there and spent most of
the afternoon multi-tasking: coincidentally trying for birds and hypothermia.
I failed to see the Worm-eating, but stuck around after other

There was a male Magnolia Warbler in the Warbler Woods along Boulder Creek
below CU/Folsom Stadium at 4:30 this afternoon. It was in a mixed flock of
Western Tanagers, Yellow Warblers, BC Chickadees, and Warbling Vireo. I wish
I'd had more time to search the flock.

Boulder,
Bayard and I had a Yellow-breasted Chat at our cabin this afternoon in the
Baca Grande at Crestone foraging in Pinyon Juniper habitat at 8100 feet - no
doubt on his way north. Above the Chat in a Pinyon, making an odd pairing,
was a Gray Flycatcher.

All the wet weather brought two female Baltimore Orioles to our backyard today!
This marks the 6th year we have had them pass through the yard. For the first 4
years it was always a lone male. Last year we had a lone female. This marks the
first time we have had two in a season...and at the
I counted 19 (10 in Montrose and 9 in Gunnison) Dusky Grouse on or next to
Hwy 92 this morning between Gould Reservoir and Blue Mesa Dam. Definitely
my one-day high count anywhere!
Also, this morning during a quick soggy hike on Neversink Trail at
Curecanti NRA I heard one Fox Sparrow, one Gray
Thanks Eric. Great recording! That's the song I heard and I'm guessing it
is the same individual that returned to the same spot this year.
Good info from Rachel on how these birds sing the other song and some
wrong songs. There's been quite a bit of work on the genetics of these
species and
came out to do some birding at Chatfield this morning and was very surprised by
all the water levels this is not a report on birding but a report on water
levels. If you're coming to Chatfield be prepared all areas are closed and

In west Fort Collins: In the two days that Dixon Reservoir/Pine Ridge
Swamp (er, Natural Area) was open, I was able to go yesterday morning.
This area had been closed all last week, which I have to admit makes
reading the reports from down south pretty painful. (I also stopped by

Wow! Thanks for the update. That's my stomping grounds but haven't been out
there for a week. I'm over the rain!

Hi all.
To add to Brad's post, I hit Dixon Res for about 30 minutes yesterday and
pretty much had the same birds. I was able to ID a Hammond's and Dusky and
there were a fair number of other empids around. No doubt with this rain it
will be closed for at least another week if not more.

I had a female Rufous Hummingbird at my feeder yesterday afternoon. I was
not fast enough for a photo, but am watching for it to come back. Got good
looks through the bins. On Bear Mt in Evergreen, they didn't arrive until
July 4. She was exactly like all the females I got every year up there
Today at around noon, Nat Warning and I had a Red-headed Woodpecker perched
on a wooden fence on the south side of Larimer CR 38E near where Trowbridge
Dr comes in (below Horsetooth Res and West of S Taft Hill Rd in Fort
Collins). We were just passing through the area, and no other species of
