Good morning!
Did anyone see the Trumpeter Swans yesterday at the S. Platte Reservoir? And,
as I've not birded there before, where, on the reservoir are they being seen,
I.e., south end, north-east corner, etc. (or is it quite apparent when one
arrives)?
Thanks!

They weren't there yesterday when I was there around 1:30. I don't think
they were seen at all yesterday. The reservoir is big (I'd recommend a
scope), but it would be pretty obvious if they were there, especially since
a good portion of the reservoir is frozen. There is a trail that skirts
After spending a few hours in Cripple Creek we went to Victor where we saw all
three Rosy-Finches; most were Gray-crowned (some Hepburn's).
This very large flock was at the "blue" house on Diamond Ave, past 4th St.
This was on New Year's eve.
If you need to warm up (it was really cold), the
The ice-line at West Fishing Road at Pueblo Reservoir, the seven Long-tailed
Ducks were present this morning, along with many Common Goldeneye and other
ducks. One Bonaparte's Gull was sitting on the ice there as well.
Around the North Shore Marina/Northern Plains Campground, there were Canyon
Yesterday I spotted all three of our Accipiters while doing New Year's
birding in the Ken Caryl Valley, with a highlight of an adult *Northern
Goshawk* at Massey Draw just below the forested slopes.
Early this morning an immature *Northern Goshawk* flew into my yard,
preceded by panic and mayhem
Hi, everybody. With Bill Schmoker, Brian Tavernia, Kim Tavernia, Sasha
Keyel, and Ted Keyel in the morning, and then with Kei Sochi, Hannah Floyd,
and Andrew Floyd in the afternoon, I had a nice time yesterday, Friday,
Jan. 1, 2016 participating in the Denver-urban Christmas Bird Count. I'll
Congrats to Pearle Sandstrom-Smith and Clif Smith, they are the first people to
see White-throated Swifts in Colorado during the month of January. Eight to
ten by Valco Ponds in Pueblo this afternoon. This means now White-throated
Swifts have been seen every month of the year!

Still Red-breasted Mergansers and at least 1 Thayer's Gull too but no swans
since the 31st, I think.

Two *Trumpeter Swans *were reported at Standley Lake on Jan 1 and were
present there this morning. Maybe they are the same two that were at South
Platte Res?
I have begun the year with a run on *Northern Goshawks*! After posting
earlier this morning I saw an adult Gos soaring over the vicinity of
Diana and I were among about a dozen birders who saw the American Woodcock at
Bobcat Ridge Natural Area opposite the ranger's house, within 10 ft of the
road, this morning at ~9:30 am. Although many people have now seen this special
Colorado bird last year at least, the precise location (map
Yesterday I found a flock of at least 20 but more likely 30 or more Eastern
Bluebirds on private property in the Canon City area. I followed them as
they moved on and into the Pathfinder Park between Canon City and
Florence. There they settled in some Russian Olive trees that had a lot of

After helping with the Louviers section of the Douglas County CBC today,
Doug Shoffner and I visited South Platte Reservoir for all the goodies
there (no swans) and then walked down by the South Platte. About a 1/4 mile
north of the C470 overpass, the spillway and the paved path roundabout,
