I took off this morning in hopes of finding some Greater Prairie Chickens in
the NE corner of the state.
Initially I drove to Tamarack SWA and drove around the west and south sides,
south of I-76. I found no chickens, but lots of sparrows and kingbirds, so I
continued down Logan County Road 93
We had a productive opening day..71 new birds kept us busy! We only
have the front nets open because there is still lake water in the outer
areas, but the birds are being accommodating, flitting through the short
willows in the area near the banding station. Here's today's breakdown:

Today 8/26 I wandered around the wooded streets of Lamar, including LCC Woods,
with new friends Beth and Linda (sorry, I didn't get last names). We did not
see Swallow-tailed Kite. We did see 40+ Mississippi Kites and a decent variety
of migrants, of which Red-eyed Vireo was
Just a few minutes ago. How cool is that!
A little rain squall came through, and I suspect that's what put them down.
("Down" is relative with Black Swifts.) Given the date, probably migrants,
yes? And although everybody who's ever seen a Black Swift has surely
observed what I'm about to say, I

During a particularly sleepless night I heard the owl calling around 3:30 am
last night. On a previous night I’ve heard the owl singing-calling around 8:00
PM so for what ever reason the E. Screech-Owl is vocalizing at this time of
year!!

Yesterday 8/25 I drove to Lamar (Prowers Co), to strike out on
Swallow-tailed Kite. Saw more Mississippi Kites than I've seen before, good
study of young birds and adults. I bushwhacked the community college woods
which was great fun, with two Carolina Wrens, two Great-crested
Flycatchers, male
