An unexpected mid-winter flock of Horned Larks along Halfmoon Road
(south of Leadville) included a colorful LAPLAND LONGSPUR. Other
species in the county this morning: Northern Shrike, all 3
Rosy-Finches in flock of about 150 attending feeders.

A closely-observed Ash-throated Flycatcher in Leadville Sunday
afternoon was a higher-than normal location for the species, @

Sunday (before the big snow hit us again) there were 22 Sandhill
Cranes near the Hayden Ranch/Moosehaven Condos, Highway 24 south of
Leadville; other noteworthy county birds: Ferruginous Hawk and Spotted
Towhee. Lots of Mt. Bluebirds and Robins back up as well.

The 3 Trumpeter Swans continue at Twin Lakes. This morning in Leadville
(East side) there was a 125+ flock of Rosy-Finches including at least one
each Gray-crowned, Hepburn's, and Black; first of season for all but
Brown-caps. Very little snow so far and lakes remain open.

There's a very active Long-eared Owl patrolling the willow thickets at
Crystal Lakes, Lake County this morning. A first county record, I believe;
my GPS has the elevation at slightly under 9500 ft. I have identifiable
photos, though distant.

Following the extremely windy weekend, we had a female Lazuli Bunting visit
the backyard yesterday evening. Only the second time I've seen this species
in Lake County. A Spotted Towhee stayed all day, also unusual at this
elevation.
