[cobirds] A few recent birds from Littleton, ARA and Ken Caryl area of JeffCo

2017-11-02 Thread David Suddjian
Several recent sightings, including today and going back in time...

Nov 2

*Steller's Jay* at Lee Gulch Trail between Prince and Windemere, Littleton,
Arapahoe. And a high-flying *Evening Grosbeak* passing over there was
notable for Littleton. At dusk a flock of about 45 Snow Geese flew south
over the vicinity of Santa Fe x Mineral Blvd in Littleton.

At Ken Caryl Valley, 1 *Harris's Sparrow* at Massey Draw, and 7
fly-over *Evening
Grosbeaks*.

Nov 1

An *Evening Grosbeak* flew over Hildebrand Ranch Park, JeffCo, and another
flew over my home at Ken Caryl Valley. A *White-winged Junco* in my yard
was only the 2nd one I've had in my home area in 4 years.

Oct 30

A female *Northern Pintail* flying near my home was a surprise. It looked
like she landed in the adjacent pond. This species is rare at Ken Caryl
Valley.

Oct 29

A *Harris's Sparrow* was at St. Mary Church in Littleton, and a Type 2 *Red
Crossbill *flew over there.

Oct 28

A *Steller's Jay* was at Sycamore Street off South Prince in Littleton,
maybe the same as one seen adjacent on Oct 26 (below)

Oct 26

A *Steller's Jay* was at St. Mary Church in Littleton.

[cobirds] Red Crossbill, el Paso County

2017-11-02 Thread Suke C Lee
I remember someone asking Cobirds contibutors to report sightings of Red
Crossbills but can't remember who it was.

I had 7-8 Red Crossbills in my yard about an hour ago. I believe they were
type 5 but I am no expert on their vocalization. I observed them for about 10
minutes; I don't know how long they had been here. They flew south-east to the
Latigo Equestrian Center and disappeared behind the buildings.

I had never seen them in my yard or in El Paso County since we've been here
(1986).

Bood birding,

Cecile Lee (Cici)

Elbert, CO (Birds were in El Paso County).

[cobirds] Re: Denver — Harris’s Sparrow

2017-11-02 Thread Adam Vesely
I had an additional Harris's Sparrow this afternoon at Rocky Mountain
Arsenal (Adams County), just a few miles north of John's sighting. The
bird was along the Prairie Switchback Trail, just north of Lake Mary.
Alongside several American Tree Sparrows and a Song Sparrow.

[cobirds] New Yard Bird (Song Sparrow) - Centennial, CO (Arapahoe)

2017-11-02 Thread Jared Del Rosso
The absence of Song Sparrows from my suburban, Centennial yard has bemused
me since I moved here in March 2016. On one hand, this bird doesn't seem to
prefer yards and feeders in my area all that much (although Ben Sampson's
yard, farther east than mine, seems to be a veritable Song Sparrow
hotspot). On the other hand, sparrows generally seem to like my yard, owing
to a line of brushy bushes, young trees, and plants that I let go to seed
(even when my neighbor thinks I shouldn't). My hunch was that most of these
birds just don't move much around my area, spending their lives along the
nearby High Line Canal, Big & Little Dry Creeks, and marshes. And any that
are moving around would, I assume, prefer those sort of spots too. (I'm
open to hearing other, better reasoned reasons for the absence of this
bird!)

In any case, I was pleasantly surprised this morning to see this bulky,
familiar sparrows among the juncos, foraging for millet. It made me wonder
if my most recent bit of "landscaping" -- an unruly pile of young Siberian
Elms that I hacked down -- might have contributed to its visit. More
likely, it's just the millet, the seeded catnip, and other, less observable
things (to me, at least) that brought this bird here.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Pueblo Reservoir Halloween re-cap

2017-11-02 Thread Brandon
In the morning yesterday (1 Nov), around 8am, there was one female/immature
Surf Scoter with the ducks off the South Eastern part of Pueblo Reservoir,
Pueblo County. Also, saw two Lesser Black-backed Gulls (one adult, one
first year), three Common Loons, several Bonaparte's Gulls, a Franklin's
Gull, two Red-breasted Mergansers, a Prairie Falcon, two Pinyon Jays, and a
Steller's Jay around the Reservoir. No sign of the Black Scoter or
Eurasian Wigeon yesterday. There were only about 200 ducks, compared to
like 5000+ ducks the day before.

[cobirds] Eastern plains yesterday

2017-11-02 Thread 'Migrant' via Colorado Birds
I decided to launch November with a jaunt out to Prewitt/Jackson to see what
might be about. For the most part the birding was pretty good though it was
mostly the usual suspects. I had one spot that I thought would be worth passing
along, for those who still have an unslaked thirst for shorebirds.
Prewitt had hundreds of waterfowl, but aside from the pelicans, cormorants and
western grebes, most were snugged up against the far (south) shore, and light
conditions and heat waves made ID pretty much impossible. A walk along the full
length of the dam and then along the south shore would probably yield a host of
ducks/grebes/geese for someone who wanted to make a several mile trek with a
scope.
Meanwhile, at the southwest end near the Inlet Canal (Inlet Delta?), from the
road I noticed a number of shorebirds working the mudflat. Assuming that they
were all killdeer, I nevertheless grabbed the scope and walked out for a look.
To my surprise, there were numerous non-killdeer present. I then spent a
pleasant hour arguing with eBird over my killdeer count (very conservatively at
140), a dunlin (with enough alternate plumage remaining to show the black
belly), two least sandpipers, a lesser yellowlegs and three Pluvialis plovers.
One of these I was able to positively ID as a golden-plover, while the other
two fled while I was checking out the dunlin. I didn’t see them in flight, so
no look at the wingpits, but I suspect all three were goldens, which have been
regular here this fall.
I haven’t aggravated eBird that much in a while; it didn’t like any of those
birds one bit, which is not too much of a surprise on the first of November.
Looking across the mosaic of trickles coming from the Inlet Canal, I could see
hundreds of shorebirds on the south shore. 95% were no doubt killdeer, but
through the heat shimmer I could discern a variety of sizes, so some hardy soul
with irrigation boots willing to slog across the mud could probably do well
over there.
Also, I spent quite a bit of time picking through white-crown flocks looking
for other Zono’s, without success. Then this morning a tan-striped
white-throated showed up in my back yard. Go figure.

I went with Claire Montour to Pueblo to see the waterfowl that a had been
reported. We didn’t see a lot of water fowl but we saw a lot of other cool
birds !
We were joined by birder Chris from Manitou Springs
Shrike (fly by, ? Species)
Prairie falcon in pursuit of a killdeer. The pursuit went on for some
time but the Killdeer finally got away with faster, tighter maneuvering.
Merlin- flew in with and feasted on small songbird
Northern Harrier juv.
Kestrel
Red-tailed hawk
Red breasted merganser
Horned grebe
Pied billed Grebe
Western grebes-around 50
Coots- >200
Cassins finch – 2
Gulls— I’m not even going to go there…

I’m sure there was more to be seen but we really enjoyed what we did see there.
There was no wind, it was 70°, it was beautiful – what more could we have
wanted ?
