[cobirds] Lagerman Reservoir (Boulder County)
Lagerman Reservoir usually doesn't have many birds on it but sometimes gets a little more interesting when it's raining or snowing. A quick visit during light snow this afternoon turned up a PACIFIC LOON and an adult male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. The scoter flew away at some point when I was looking elsewhere on the lake. (This is also typical of Lagerman -- birds coming and going, often not staying long.) This is a different white-winged scoter from the one at Lagerman Nov 12-14. Other birds included 23 Bonaparte's gulls (likely to leave when the snow stops), 3 Red-Breasted Mergansers, 4 Common Goldeneyes (including a female with more orange on the bill than usual), and the typical Canada and Cackling Geese. [cobirds] Red Rocks(Jeffco)-update
This afternoon, I went up to Red Rocks and spread millet under the feeders after the cold night with light snow. As soon as I spread out the seed the birds came out immediately. The Golden-crowned Sparrow showed along with a Tree Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, several Song Sparrows, lots of Juncos(no white-winged yet), Spotted Towhees, and the other more common Red Rock's birds. Hopefully a prolonged cold snap will bring Rosy-Finches this year! [cobirds] November warbler rally continues: Ovenbird in Longmont
This evening in the last of the light I ventured out to fill my feeders. A little bird I hadn't seen skulking on the ground scurried over to my brush pile, and with bare eyes I could see heavy breast striping. I first thought it must be a Song Sparrow but something about it rubbed me wrong so I ran back inside to get my bins. In the dark (around 4:50 with light snow falling) I couldn't get much of the bird other than to eliminate any of the normal suspects for this time of year, so I ran back again for my camera. I popped a few flash shots and saw to my amazement that it was an Ovenbird picking around under my feeders: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9047968@N02/ I scattered a handful of freeze-dried waxworms hope the little guy finds them. Not a good night for a bird that should be in a much warmer place by now- forecasted low of 6° F.
