[cobirds] Breeding Bird Survey routes available

2021-03-22 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We invitequalified observers to participate in the Breeding Bird
Survey “BBS.”Participants must have the skills to identify the likely species
on theirroutes by sight and by sound.     Since 1966 (1968 in Colorado
and theWest) the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (originally US Fish &
WildlifeService, now the Biological Research Division of the US Geological
Survey) hassponsored the Breeding Bird Survey program to monitor birds across
the US (andCanada, with the Canadian Wildlife Service). In 2019 volunteers ran
almost 3000routes in the US & Canada.Scientists use BBS results to derive
population trends forthe species that the system samples well.
Coloradohas 132 designated BBS routes, and we consistently run more routes than
allother states in the U.S. except Texas and California.     A BBS
routecovers 24.5 miles. Observers record all the birds they hear and see during
a3-minute stop, then drive a half-mile to the next stop. You run the route,
onceonly, during the peak of the songbird singing season, from May 25 on the
plainsto July 15 in the high country. The ability to identify species by sound
iscrucial--I record 75-85% of the birds on my routes by sound, not sight.
Theobserver should have the ability to identify, by sound and sight, most
of the species likely to occur along thatroute. On my routes, I identify over
75% of the birds by sound, without everseeing them. We seek a commitment
ofthree years, because the BBS prefers route data run by the same person forat
least 3 years.     Email meif you would like one or more. The following
list is organized geographically(sort of). I hope that we can fill most of them
with qualified observers whohave good ears.     Thefollowing lists the
available routes; I can send more detailed descriptions toyou if you’d like to
consider one but want more information. I know it’s old–fashioned, but I use the
DeLorme (printed on paper) Atlas to locate routes.     Key to
routedescriptions:Number and name   County    Page in
DeLorme Atlas
Iespecially enjoyed the first few pre-dawn stops along the wetlands area
ofPoncha Creek; the dawn Chorus there was often a tad overwhelming.

Hi,
In your "about" section the link to rules of the road should be
https://cobirds.org/CFO.aspx?id=25
Right now it is a broken link.

When reading what is and isn't allowed on CoBirds, it says with any
problems I should contact the list manager, but I couldn't find that
information. So hopefully this email will get to the list manager!

I have not been receiving an email of my own submissions to CoBirds.
Thankfully, my recent sighting and email about the Sagebrush Sparrow showed
in "conversations." I don't know if people got emails with that message or
if they just regularly check the listserv, because I didn't get an email of
my initial posting.

Can you let me know why I am not getting an email that shows my post? I do
get emails with responses to the conversation though.

Thank you

Observation start time: 09:00:00
Observation end time: 12:00:00
Total observation time: 3 hours

Official Counter:Mike Fernandez

Observers:Karen Fernandez

Visitors:
No visitors to the platform. About six trail users.

Weather:
As we started up the hill visibility was clear along the foothills, but a
ground fog socked in Morrison and then blanketed Red Rocks. By the time we
reached the platform we were immersed in a cloud. Occasionally we could see
briefly the top of Mt. Morrison. Never thinned out to the east of the
ridge. The fog started to lift on both sides of the ridge at 11:30 MST, but
only to the top of Red Rocks, halfway up Mt. Morrison. Watch abandoned at
12:00 MST. Weather station used: “OpenWeather” app: Morrison.

Raptor Observations:
Non Migrating Raptors:
RTHA-2, both perched.

Non-raptor Observations:
AMRO-4; TOSO-3; ROPI-3.

Predictions:
Coming down, the trail was full of mud puddles and slush. Could be very
slippery in the morning if it freezes overnight. Bring your yaktrax. If
there’s any way to check for fog tomorrow morning—you won’t be able
to tell from local conditions elsewhere—maybe consider not going up the
hill until after noon.

Dinosaur Ridge - Denver Field Ornithologists information may be found at:

More site information at hawkcount.org:
https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west
side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left,
head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the
crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)

[cobirds] Varied Thrush Continues and Other/Weld

2021-03-22 Thread 'The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds

Hi all

Over the weekend ...happy to report the Varied Thrush
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/196/town-of-nunn,
first 3 photos) in Nunn persists even after our massive blizzard conditions
up here.

Massive gull flock (up close) on south side of Hwy 14
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/185/landfill-weld,
first 20 or so photos) across from Weld Landfill in flooded fields from
snow melting. Have not looked closely at photos yet. Saw Lesser
Black-backed (ad.), Herring, California, and Ring-billed Gull for sure.

Latham Reservoir marsh and Beebe Draw
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/16/weld-cr-48-and-beebe-draw-la-salle,

first 15 or so photos) have lots of flooded fields. Ducks and gulls only so
far.

Weld CR 59 marsh
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/24/weld-cr-59-marsh-kersey,

first five or so photos) and Loloff Reservoir full of ducks, some geese.

Stewart's Pond and CR 41 ponds are open for business and the small pond on
south is slowly refilling with water-still a nice mud flat though.

Greater Yellowlegs and American White Pelican at Weld CR 41 ponds. I could
hear tons of geese cackling on Behrens Reservoir.

This morning on way into Fort Collins along Weld CR 100 btw Nunn and
Wellington had Merlin, Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and
Ferruginous Hawk.

Various regular visiting birds
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/25/my-yard-nunn,
first 13 photos) of late in Nunn yard.
