[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Station, 5/17/21

2021-05-17 Thread Meredith McBurney
Under cloudy skies, we had similar numbers to the past few days but fewer
species. Here's the breakdown of today's 24 new birds:

Least Flycatcher 1 banded 2018 (a species that we rarely recapture in
subsequent years)
House Wren 1
Gray Catbird 2
Yellow Warbler 8
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 5
Common Yellowthroat 3
Yellow-breasted Chat 3
Brewer's Sparrow 1

We are open six days per week (closed Tuesdays) through May 30, weather
permitting. While some COVID related restrictions remain in place there
are opportunities most mornings for the public to visit, but reservations
are required. Visit https://denveraudubon.org/events/

 for
more information and to sign-up. Because each hour-long session is limited
to 10 people, we anticipate selling out most mornings, so register soon if
you are interested.

[cobirds] Re: Western Tanager and others

2021-05-17 Thread Douglas Powell
Wow,

We had a similar weekend. We did have a pair of Western Tanagers show up at
the feeding station in our backyard. Cannot figure out if they are nesting
somewhere or just passing through. We are feeding WBU Choice Blend (tube &
platform), WBU No-Mess (tube feeder), Black Nyjer (tube feeder), and we
have one hummingbird dispenser. We do have trees and shrubs leafing out
nicely, also a bird bath and water fountain. These birds can hardly resist
moving water.

This weekend seemed extra busy: Western Tanager male & female, one Lazuli
Bunting, one yellow warbler, a gang of Blue Jays, one Stellar's Jay in the
gang, one Black Chinned hummer, one Downy Wood Pecker, two Turkey Vultures
(soaring), two pairs of Collared Doves, several Robins, one pair of nesting
Black Capped Chickadees (just 8 feet from our back deck), one Yellow Rumped
Warbler, multiple Sparrows, House Finches, Goldfinches, and Red Winged
Blackbirds. No hawks sighted this weekend which may partially account for
all the other activity we saw.

[cobirds] Sagebrush Sparrow, Admiral Burke Park, Boulder Cty

2021-05-17 Thread Peter Burke
COBirders,
I had a very brief look at a Sagebrush Sparrow at approx. 4:30 at the SE
corner of Admiral Burke Park, in the scrub by the gazebo. I only saw the
bird because a Red-winged Blackbird apparently didn't want it around. The
blackbird first flushed the sparrow to within a few feet of where I was
standing, then with a second pass, the sparrow disappeared into the scrub.
I did hear a few high-pitched chips, but I never relocated it.

[cobirds] Weekend birds, Douglas

2021-05-17 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
What a great joy to return from Seattle to find a mass of birds around our
home patch -- and here, us able to identify them (mostly).
Most impressive: Swallows on Castlewood Canyon Road: 500 Cliffs, 75 Trees
(eBird alert), 50 Barns, a few Rough-wings, Violet-greens, and one Bank. A
Bullock's Oriole; Great-tailed Grackles, one at McClain pit, one at Walker pit.
At home, 2 House Wrens, 5 Black-headed Grosbeaks, 5 Western Tanagers, and best
of all, 3 Lazuli Buntings.

Today, 8 singing Yellow Warblers, 8 singing Song Sparrows, a Yellow-breasted
Chat, 3 Orioles, 4 singing Am. Goldfinches, 2 Eastern Kingbirds and Say's
Phoebe. Yet hardly any swallows!

[cobirds] Migrants at CSR, El Paso Co, Mon

2021-05-17 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

Today saw a very good arrival of migrants at Clear Spring Ranch. 32 birds
banded today. This was a day for “big birds” - especially Bullock’s Oriole. I
banded 12, but probably saw in excess of 30 moving through the area from
6:30-11:00 (and I only see about 25% of the corridor from my vantage). Also
arriving were a male Black-headed Grosbeak and 2 Gray Catbirds banded in
previous years and each recaptured multiple times since. One catbird was banded
as an adult in 2014, and recaptured here in 2017, 2018, 2021.

Also
FOY Willow Flycatcher Ad
FOY Western Tanager Ad M (sounds like they were about everywhere on the Front
Range today)
FOY Lazuli Bunting Ad F, (but males area around as well as male Blue Grosbeaks,
both as yet uncaptured).
Warbling Vireo (SY)
N Waterthrush Ad (#4 this week)
and various Com Yellowthroat, Yellow Warbler, YB Chats, Catbirds, and House
Wrens.

This was my best day for numbers banded this spring. Very encouraging.

Happy Migration,
Steve Brown

Thank you Carol. I listened to recordings for the poorwill, and while I
can see why you thought of it based on my description, it is not quite an
exact match. Mine is more deliberate and the intervals between the calls
are longer. Also, I am hearing it during the day, and from higher than
ground level, although I will listen in the evening and night for it. Any
other thoughts?

[cobirds] Western Tanager, Highlands Ranch, Douglas County

2021-05-17 Thread Lesley Brown
Good Morning! We just had 2 male Western Tanagers on the jelly feeder. We
saw them over the weekend, too. No females yet. We have also seen 2 male
and 2 female Bullock's Orioles, and 2 male Black-headed Grosbeaks at the
feeders this last week or so.

Yay Spring : )

[cobirds] Western Tanager - west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2021-05-17 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,    Just had a Western Tanager on the suet in my little
townhouse yard near Holy & Arapahoe in west Centennial.   Based on Sibley's
drawings the bird wasn't in breeding plumage, which seems a little late.  A few
minutes later a Chipping Sparrow was at the sunflower seed. Keep Smilin',Kevin

[cobirds] Question about bird call, Fremont County

2021-05-17 Thread Laura Gorman
>From my backyard here in Canon City, I keep hearing a two- note bird call
that sounds a bit like “bob white”, stronger on the second syllable,
repeated at intervals. The bird apparently does not move around much, as I
keep hearing it from the same general area. Can anyone take a guess at what
this might be?
Thanks,
Laura Gorman
