[cobirds] white egrets
Folks, Differentiating juvenile little blue heron from snowy egret in fall is fraught with peril. I mean, you could get it wrong and then what? I have been looking at Colorado's smallish, white egrets in fall and have noticed something. Birds being reported as juvi little blues show bill and lore characteristics of juvi little blue herons. When I look at SIbley's depiction of bill and lores of juvi little blue heron vs. snowy egret, I am not confident I could differentiate them based on those features. But observing birds and photos of birds reported as juvi little blue heron here in Colorado, I have noticed something... leg color. Adult snowy egrets have dark (black) legs and yellow feet. Adult little blue herons have dull greenish-yellow legs and feet. Juvenile snowy egrets show a dark (black) front of legs and yellowish to greenish-yellow back of legs, basically two-tone. Juvi little blue heron legs are the same color as adult birds uniform, dull greenish-yellow. All of this fall's reports of juvi little blue herons I have observed, either in person or from photos have bi-colored legs. The front of the leg is dark, the back of the leg is yellow or pale. I am no expert in identifying juvi little blue heron, but I have scrutinized photos of these birds from Texas and they all seem to have uniform (front to back) dull yellow-green leg color. When observing these white egret-herons, make note of leg color, front and back. I THINK this could be helpful in identifying the correct species. [cobirds] Hermit Warbler
My close and personal friend Steve Larson found a great bird today in Boulder. I and many others were able to photograph this rarity, a hermit warbler. I suspect this bird is a 1st year male, based on the extent of black in the crown and throat. My photos of this Pacific Northwest warbler can be found here.. https://gwalbek.smugmug.com/2019-Birds/ This is the 20th species of warbler I have observed in just over 24 hours. Birding Eastern Colorado yesterday, I and others racked up a nice tally of Eastern birds including, bay-breasted, worm-eating, magnolia, hooded, Tennessee, blackpoll, and northern parula as well as veery and gray-cheeked thrush. I recommend you check your ‘patch’ often in the next few days, as Steve Larson did today. [cobirds] NE Colorado foray
Folks, Steve Larson and I ventured out to northeast Colorado, primarily to find Sharp-tailed Grouse, shorebirds and early migrants. We scored on the grouse along Weld hwy 134 with 9 birds in 4 locations. Going early seems to be the key for success here. On the shorebird front, Jumbo and Prewitt reservoirs are filled to capacity with little or no room for shorebirds. Red Lion SWA has decent shorebird habitat and should be checked in the coming weeks for migrant shorebirds. Moving west along highway 34, we found good shorebird conditions at Weld county Rd. 59 and Loloff reservoir. We and others (Norm Lewis's group) found a Whimbrel, Marbled Godwits, Least Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Willets, Wilson's Phalarope, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, White-faced Ibis, Black-necked Stilts, and American Avocets, Coupled with the seemingly lack of ephemeral playas in eastern Colorado, Red Lion and the ponds around Bebe Draw could be productive for the next 6 weeks. Passerines were few and far between, with a handfull of Orange-crowned Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Say's Phoebes, Vesper Sparrows, Field Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows. Good birding... [cobirds] THE Neotropic Cormorant
Folks, I and many others observed the previously reported Neotropic Cormorant during the course of the day. The bird is significantly smaller than the many, nearby DCCOs. Careful examination in the field, coupled with photographic evidence show a bird with a smaller, narrower bill, longer tail, rounder head and thinner neck than those DCCOs. The cincher is the gape and lores. This smallish, fish eater has no yellow above the bill, dark lores and a pointed gape, edged in white. These features would be difficult for a DCCO to sport! [cobirds] Marston tufted duck
I saw this bird on the west side of the reservoir and was somewhat puzzled. Then I saw small but noticeable feather tufts on the back of the head, more noticeable than my distant pictures show. I have seen exactly one tufted duck prior to this (not a juvi) so I am no expert on this species. I was able to get some camera phone digi-scoped pictures which I have attached to my list. I have to admit I am a bit troubled by the head shape of this bird. It is a juvi so I am ok with the seemingly lack of a dark breast. The head is shaped a bit like ring-necked duck imo, but it lacks the pale eyering and eyeline. And I’ve never seen a ring-necked duck with tufts on the head with no eyering or eyeline. I was able to find similar looking juvi ‘tufted duck’ pictures online. [cobirds] Black-billed Cuckoo, Grace's Warbler, Dickcissels
Folks, Yesterday after working on the plains, I wandered up to Jumbo / Tamarack SWAs to look for northeast specialties and see if some of the recently reported migrants were hanging around. At parking area 1 of Tamarack SWA on the west side of hwy 83, I briefly observed and briefly heard calling a Black-billed Cuckoo along with several Yellow-billed Cuckoos. I mentioned this to Joey Kellner this morning and he and his group were able to refind and photograph the bird in the same location. This is where the Eastern Wood-Pewee has been vocalizing now for a second straight year. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S37340218 Today, I took my chances on the Grace’s Warbler in Cheyenne Mountain SP and found him singing a bit south of the previously reported locations. On my return trip I heard a singing Dickcissel in the grassy area(s) near the amphitheater. Last year around this time, I encountered signing Dickcissels in marginal Dickcissel habitat in the foothills of Douglas County. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S37355383 Good Birding! I just read the ABA has implemented 'sanctuary hot spots', where birders can bird freely without fear of intimidation, deportation, or ID questioning. I make it a point never to pass a "private property" sign, to cross fences or enter anywhere that says "keep out". However, I find that more and more I am being harrassed for being in areas which appear have public access. "Golf Cart Boy" out at Latham once called the sheriff on me (he did it while I was standing there, so I know he actually did it; I overheard the conversation). I just stood there while he yelled at me that I was ignoring him, to which I replied, "Yep". He left, but I waited around for the authorities, who of course never appeared. They probably got a good laugh out of his report of a miscreant birder. Anyway, if law enforcement gives me a valid reason way I should vacate an area, vacate I will. Yesterday's "officer" (who must have looking desperately for a reason to justify her existence) just sputtered about "DIA" and "private property" and really had no good reason why I should leave the area. That's probably enough on this subject. Please obey all property signs and follow the ABA Code of Ethics. But I submit that there is no reason why birders should be bullied just because we have a reputation for being rather passive. [cobirds] Cherry Creek jaeger
Folks, I and others studied the Cherry Creek jaeger for a couple of hours this afternoon. It never approached very close so observations and photos were of a distant jaeger. I have attached the link to the ebird checklist containing photos. Some of the photos are 200 % crop for the sake of detail. Here are some of my observations. In good light, the bird appeared warm brown. Others commented it appeared almost golden at one point. This is something I would not expect to see in either of the other two jaegers (Pomarine, Long-tailed), but especially Long-tailed. This lead us to eliminate LTJA quickly. A large, white patch in the underwing due to the pale basal half of the primaries was evident. Photos confirm this as well as the seemingly lack of pale bases to the primary coverts (which create the double white flash in Pomarine Jaeger). The bill was longish and dark at the tip appearing PAJA-like. I did not think the bill was heavy enough, with a large enough nail for POJA. So Parasitic Jaeger seems to fit this bird. Although I am a bit confused about the seemingly pale P9-P10 shafts (indicative of LTJA). Also, these photos do not depict the warm tones that were observed in the field, likely due to cloud cover. Comments are welcome, but I suggest a visit to Cherry Creek before conclusions are made based on these photos. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31597008 Glenn Walbek Castle Rock, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] Cherry Creek jaeger, Sabine's Gulls
I was able to return to Cherry Creek after a couple of appointments. After seeing and photographing the juvi jaeger, I believe like Joe Roller, it is a Parasitic Jaeger. It has no 'double flash', is warm brown and has a nail about 1/3 the length of the thin bill. Bird is actively chasing gulls. [cobirds] El Paso Co. varia
Folks, I visited Big Johnson Reservoir on my way home from work today, looking for the lingering *Pacific Loon* discovered by Peterson almost 2 weeks ago. I found the loon close to the southwest shore where good views could be had from the parking area. The basic plumage *Common Loon* also persists, but a breeding plumage *Red-necked Grebe* was a colorful surprise. Possibly more significant, I observed an adult, male *Chestnut-collared Longspur* south of Calhan in northeast El Paso County. Neither Colorado Birding Atlases show this species as a breeder in El Paso County. I can not yet confirm breeding of this species in El Paso County, however the date suggests breeding is occurring there. * McCown's Longspurs* are not uncommon breeders in northeast El Paso County and I have recently observed hatched youngsters of this species. The potential of a late/early, migrating Chestnut-collared Longspur in this area seems remote given the date. I will post to this list if I can confirm breeding of Chestnut-Collared Longspurs in El Paso Co. and call for the presses to stop at Atlas II ;-) Glenn Walbek Castle Rock, CO https://gwalbek.smugmug.com/browse -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Folks, Loch Kilpatrick, Paul Differding, Lisa Edwards, Kara Carragher and I saw and photographed this first year male Summer Tanager yesterday at Tempel Grove. It was one of very few eastern migrants observed in SE Colorado this weekend. As Duane eluded to, Swainson's Thrush migration is in full force. White-crowned Sparrows were observed in amazing numbers and Broad-winged Hawks were seen in many favorable woodlots. Otherwise migration seemed relatively slow even for Colorado breeding species. Maybe the best news, we were able to submit an ebird checklist with shorebirds for Upper Queens Reservoir. The Indian reservoirs in Kiowa county are full of water! [cobirds] Lincoln Co. arrivals
Folks, Once again I am performing surveys in Lincoln Co. this spring season. Some of the recent arrivals include: Four Mountain Plovers seen today in a sprouting winter wheat field. This is a week earlier than last year and the earliest I have seen this species in Colorado. Three Sage Thrashers were observed in various locations, usually involving wood (fences, wood piles). Lastly, I observed a couple of thousand McCown's Longspurs during the past 2 days. They are using last year's stubble fields and this year's wheat fields, adjacent to short grass prairie. I noticed longspurs in amazing numbers last spring in this area and this spring appears to be beginning the same. I am certain a few McCown's and Chestnut-collared Longspurs overwintered here with thousands of Lapland Longspurs, but the numbers of McCown's I am seeing now is way too great for wintering birds. There are a handful of Chestnut-collared Longspurs mixed in, and may be the over-wintering population. The longspurs are mostly in breeding plumage. I was hoping to get some looks at Lapland Longspurs in breeding plumage before they flew north, however I have not seen nor heard any in 2 days of surveying. Spring has arrived. Should you plan to look for birds south of Arriba, please stay on county roads. Not surprisingly, the birds frequent the gravel roads during inclement weather. [cobirds] Re: Aurora Snowy Owl, YES
Folks, Here are directions to the Snowy Owl from Joe Roller: Park at the intersection of Quantico and South Shore, take footpath towards small brown-roofed outhouse. This is a bout a 20 minute walk and into the south entrance of the park (foot-traffic only). The owl is visible from here with naked eye, but at a great enough distance as to not frighten it. Good Luck if you go! Glenn Walbek Castle Rock, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
