[cobirds] Kinney Trail in Golden

2018-09-12 Thread JoAnn Hackos
Is anyone familiar with birding on Kinney Run Trail and Open Space in Golden?
It is listed as an e-bird hotspot. Apparently the city of Golden wants to turn
it into a mountain biking park and trail. Some birders have contacted me to
help protest it on behalf of Evergreen Audubon. Please let us know if you
consider this an "important " birding area.

[cobirds] National Audubon Photo Exhibit

2018-06-03 Thread JoAnn Hackos
I hope you will all join us at Evergreen Audubon and the Center for the Arts
Evergreen on Thursday, June 7 at 5 pm – 8 pm for the Opening Reception. We are
hosting the National Audubon Photo Exhibit. See www.evergreenarts.org/events
for more information about all our Year of the Bird events through June.

Visit the Center for the Arts Evergreen, 31880 Rocky Village Rd, Evergreen CO,
for the opening reception of this incredible photography exhibit and walk among
the winning bird photographs from this year's Audubon Photography Awards.
Several workshops and events are scheduled throughout the month featuring
professional photographers, artists and birders sharing their expertise and
enthusiasm for wildlife art. Be sure to see the events listed below and
register.

Selected from more than 5,500 entries, the winning photos show birdlife at its
most visible, vulnerable, formidable, and elegant. Photographers from 49 states
and eight Canadian provinces submitted images in three categories:
professional, amateur, and youth. A panel of five judges had the daunting task
of sifting through the stunning images and grading them based on technical
quality, originality, and artistic merit.

[cobirds] Prospect Park Wheatridge and Red Rocks

2012-03-24 Thread JoAnn Hackos
Bill Hackos and I took a spring walk in Prospect Park on Friday 23 March. We
usually head their each week. This week:

Song Sparrows singing
Black-capped Chickadees singing
Lesser Goldfinch singing
Red-winged Blackbirds singing
White-breasted Nuthatch singing

Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker — digging nest holes

Cooper's Hawk eating a small rodent
Red-tailed Hawk

Double-crested Cormorant
Canada Goose
Mallard
Gadwall pair
Bufflehead
American Wigeon
American Crow

At Red Rocks, we watched the Peregrine Falcon go into and out of a nesting hole

Watched it on land and preen on a tree stump on the hillside opposite until it
got too dark.

After a remarkably Finchless season, we finally had 6-7 Cassin's at our feeder

(also returned several weeks ago), they have been absent.

In Evergreen at 7700 feet.

[cobirds] Wheatridge Prospect Park Barrow's Goldeneye

2011-02-22 Thread Joann Hackos
Bill Hackos and I were birding with our grandchildren on Saturday Feb 19 in
Wheatridge Prospect Park ‹ and the Evergreen Audubon Group was also present.
We saw a Barrow¹s Goldeneye on the first lake from the west parking lot
(near Youngfield Road). If you park in the main lot off 44th, take the path
past the Cormorant/Heron roost lake and over the bridge. Stop at the lake on
the right of the bridge. Seemed to also be a Barrow¹s female alongside the
male but difficult to tell.

Other sightings:
Common Goldeneye
Redhead
American Shoveler
Coot
Canada Goose
Mallard
Hooded Merganser
Northern Flicker
Downy Woodpecker
Black-capped Chickadee
Red-winged Blackbird
White-breasted Nuthatch
Bufflehead
Ring-billed Gull
American Wigeon
Gadwall
House Finch
American Crow

[cobirds] Unusual Goldeneye at Chatfield

2009-02-16 Thread Joann Hackos
We birded at Chatfield on Sunday, Feb 15 for the GBBC. Among 30 Common
Merganzers, 40 Redheads, 4 Hooded Merganzers, and 50 Mallards, we watched
10-12 Common Goldeneys for more than 30 minutes through the high power of
the Questar. One bird had us pretty baffled.

We watched a Goldeneye with no white patch. It was an adult male with an
almost vertical forehead and small, more pointed bill, looking exactly like
a Barrow¹s Goldeneye. It had a much darker back than the Commons, with a
strong black spur at the shoulder extending into the white breast. It was
swimming with the Commons but had almost a Hooded appearance with the
straight forehead and the thin bill. With the Hooded swimming nearby,
however, the overall differences were obvious.

Any ideas about an adult male Barrow¹s without a white patch? Could this be
a juvenile just not quite in full adult plumage?
