The sitempa should be at

xml-cocoon2\src\webapp\samples\xmlform

not in the howto directory

Reading session values - last char lost !

2002-12-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all ,

We are using the authentication f/w for sessions and same works fine except
for wierd problem of Last char of retrieved value being cut off as below :

In one case , the foll values inserted into a tag as :

jhn
btx
pkt

For retrieving these session values in an action (since we use aggregate and
does not work in aggregated pipes) we use

org.w3c.dom.node.getNodeValue() to put session values
into comma delimited string :

the problem is one value retrieved is always cut off :

  jhn,bt,pkt when it should : jhn,btx,pkt

the LAST character of the SECOND VALUE IS ALWAYS LOST .

In another case of a single session value again the LAST CHARACTER is lost.

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

B.rgds,

Sandhu

RE: I cant get the latest nightly download to work

2002-12-20 Thread Geoff Howard
possibly - you have that there for another app? don't think it's needed
there for cocoon.

I'd suggest getting rid of xerces.jar in common/lib/ and xsltc from
common/endorsed. I am using xsltc as well for transformation but don't
think it's supposed to go in endorsed.

Geoff

RE: I cant get the latest nightly download to work

2002-12-20 Thread aps olute

Thanks for the info. Anyhow, I had the java/jre/lib/endorsed with some older
xml jars, erased those, and then created the TOMCAT_HOME/common/endorsed as you
suggested, copied over the xml jar files (xalan-2.4.1.jar xercesImpl-2.1.0.jar
 xml-apis.jar xsltc.jar) from xml-cocoon2/common/endorsed/
I also tried just for kicks having both 4files at java/jre/lib/endorsed and
at
TOMCAT_HOME/common/endorsed with exact same errors. Also tried having those 4
jar files in the java/jre/lib/endorsed and still same errors.

Would the xerces.jar at TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib/ conflict with
TOMCAT_HOME/common/endorsed/xercesImpl-2.1.0.jar ? but it didnt seem like, Any
other ideas?

RE: I cant get the latest nightly download to work

2002-12-20 Thread Geoff Howard
That's the error you get when there's a problem with the endorsed xml jars
in jdk 1.4. If this is a fresh install, you need to go read the
instructions for jdk1.4 (if you're using tomcat, you need to be aware that
it overrides the default endorsed directory and the jars need to go in
$TOMCAT_HOME/common/endorsed/

If this is an upgrade, the problem is probably just that a newer version of
one of those jars is in WEB-INF/lib than is in endorsed and you need to get
them in sync (probably by deleting the one in endorsed and moving the newer
one over)

RE: new to cocoon... trouble creating sandbox

2002-12-20 Thread Geoff Howard
It looks like your sitemap is looking for helloworld.xml in cocoon-dev/ not
cocoon-dev/tutorial/

Without knowing any more about what sitemap matches you have set up, it's
hard
to tell what's going on.

Oh and by the way, your email client is sending html email which will not
win you friends on the list. Some people with text-only clients will have a
hard time even reading your messages and won't bother.

Hope that helps,
Geoff Howard

Tried to create webapps/cocoon-dev by copying webapps/cocoon to

( Doing this at the suggestion of a tutorial. )

put helloworld.xml and helloworld.xsp into cocoon-dev/tutorial.

localhost/cocoon-dev/helloworld.xml produces an error: resource-not-found
cocoon-dev/helloworld.xml .

Can you tell from that information what I'm doing incorrectly?

Thanks.

I am not running the webdav-servlet and the
slide-sample at the same time (in parallel). I am
just running cocoon with the slide sample and this is
not versioning. I have set my slide.xconf to
version=true and resetBeforeStarting=false...as well
as the delta-V parameters. Despite this the
versioning is not working. I used the same conf from
my standalone slide webapp (which is no longer
running since I am working on the cocoon slide
sample).

I had set the filestores root path absolutely. it
works great. thanks.

*other issues*
I wrote Stephan to let him know of some issues I have
with the current implementation. I would like to
improve the download and lock capabilities since they
do not seem to work via the web interface. Moreover,
the create new collection action does not work either.
The new collection is created, but the collection is
not persisted. I am not a cocoon nor slide expert,
but would be more than happy to attempt these patches.
let me know what you think about this and about the
status of versioning.

Have a look, how the Domain is initialized. It might cause
difficulties, if you run Cocoon and the Webdav-Servlet
in parallel. Stephan an me will work this out next
year. Also Authentication is not properly forwarded.

I guess Stephan meant, which directory the files stores use.
I think, the best way to do this, is to use a absolute path in
slide.xconf.

Martin,

Thanks, worked like a charm. Unfortunately, I now
find out that although I have mulipart uploads
working, versioning does not work via HTTP. Have you
found a workaround to this? I have not implemented
the webdav-servlet yet, but I am sure that works just
the same via WebDav. It seems as though the
slide.xconf (formerly Domain.xml) makes no difference
via HTTP. I will hack at this and see what I can do.

Some things must be fixed:

,but I was able to set this properly. Did you have
this problem? I will contact Stephan and let him know
as well.

Thanks again,

Progress at and ideas from heml.mta.ca

2002-12-20 Thread Bruce Robertson
List members may be interested in our progress at the Historical Event Markup
and Linking project, which uses Cocoon to transform XML documents into
historical timelines, tables maps and animations in SVG. Links to the eye-candy
are just off the home page: http://heml.mta.ca (Be sure to have the latest SVG
viewer from Adobe.)

Since heml is a reasonably complex site, its sitemap and innards might interest
those who are planning their own cocoon-based work. I can't claim it's anything
like best practices, but it works.

.war files tested against tomcat are available at http://heml.mta.ca/releases

As well, our build process might interest those who wish to keep their
Cocoon-based project current with Cocoon's libraries. Our build.xml calls the
one from Cocoon, and copies over its jar files, then compiles and moves our
java, xslt and xml. Upgrading to 2.0.4 was thus a matter of changing an env.
variable.

ViewCVS for browsing is at:
http://heml.mta.ca/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/heml_cvs/

Anonymous cvs:
cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/heml/cvsroot checkout heml_cvs
password: anoncvs

Finally, a giant thank-you to those who toil at making Cocoon better and better
with each release. More than two years ago, I decided to base this project in
Cocoon2. Since then, I've felt as if I have a team of experts working on the
nitty-gritty while I get to work on the big picture.

Yrs,

Re: How to install Cocoon with Apache?

Hi Soren -

You can download a bundle called Az from http://www.galatea.com/az. It
currently uses 2.0.3, but I'll be upgrading to 2.0.4 this weekend. It is
available on Linux and Windows.

Cheers,

Another important Cocoon/XMLForm vs. Struts Question

2002-12-20 Thread Michael Bald
Title: Nachricht

Hi everybody,I am a German student who is writing his bachelor
thesis about buildingWeb-Applications and especially about doing it with
Cocoon and XMLForm. In the last chapter I will give reasons why it is
necessary to useCocoon instead of Struts. 3 month ago the answer seems to be
clear orto say it in better words, you could
not ask this question because theframeworks had totally different
goals. If you want multi-channel web-publishing, you had to use Cocoon and
ifyou want to build applications to handle a flow of HTML-Forms, you
hadto use Struts. But I think, things have changed. With XMLForm in
Cocoon you have acomfortable way, to handle HTML-Forms. On the other hand
there aresolutions like StrutsCx or stxx to transform the responses in
everywanted format with XSLT. I' ve read the arguments by Ivelin Ivanov
in his mail(http://outerthought.net/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=XMLFormsStruts) that youshould use Cocoon "if you plan to build
a lot of web applications inthe future". I hope you can tell me just a few
more arguments, becausehe did not
mentioned that you have the possibility to use Struts withXSL.
Thanks for your help

RE: Source aggregation by XInclude

2002-12-20 Thread DURDINA Michal
Hello,
now I'm using CachingCIncludeTransformer, but sometimes I encounter caching
problems and hence unwanted recompilation to Java classes in some cases.

In my test case I have 2 serverpages with 2 variations and following resulst
under Cocoon 2.0.3 and Cocoon 2.0.4 (changed hash keys):
http://durdina/ebanking/main/main.xml - cached under 2.0.3, always
recompiled under 2.0.4
http://durdina/ebanking/banks2/banks.xml - cached under 2.0.3, always
recompiled under 2.0.4
and same pages copied to opposite directories
http://durdina/ebanking/main/banks.xml - cached under 2.0.3, always
recompiled under 2.0.4
http://durdina/ebanking/banks2/main.xml - always recompiled under 2.0.3,
cached under 2.0.4

According to logs, xml_source (from */*.source pipeline) objects are always
cached, but serverpagers generator which uses cocoon:/ protocol loads
compiled Java classes from cache only and only if they satisfy some specific
name condition (URL). For examle it helped me to rename banks2/main.xml file
to
banks2/bmain.xml to initiate caching of the same compiled source
(org.apache.cocoon.www.cocoon_._.banks2.main_source) instead of throwing it
away and recompiling the page on every request basically to get the same
class :).

Is this known caching issue, or do you have any other solution for me?

Thanks for help,
Michal

I agree that the ideal situation is the ability to forward cookies
between the remote application and the real client (i.e. a browser
requesting from Cocoon) and vice versa. Additionally, those cookies
should be readable *and* modifyable by logic inside Cocoon.

Unfortunatelly I just started with HttpClient and haven't found any

Re: [Question] Re: cocoon-session management.

2002-12-20 Thread SAXESS - Hussayn Dabbous
Yes, in principle you are right. You could use
HTTPClient to organise the session management.

But you will have to consider other points:

1.) Your subsession may be authenticated. Thus you
will have to maintain interactions between the
cocoon-client and the far-application server to
get logged into your subsystem. Then you would
be faced with flow control iussues...
This may be a problem, since your cocoon-client
operates silently in the background...

2.) Besides this, your subsession might want to
pass permanent cookies to it's client. This may
be possible with HTTP-Client, but then you will
have to maintain a cookie-database for your
cocoon clients... (No problem if your app runs
only for yourself ;-)

Both points are from my point of view problematic.
In certain cases the approach work. In other cases
you might run into complexity problems.

I would rather keep the interaction at the browser
site, thus it is the browser who keeps the cookies
and it is the cocoon-client, who acts as a proxy and
passes the cookies to the underlying subsystem...
OK, here you face other problems, but these problems
can at least be solved in general without getting
too mutch complexity into the game...
Maybe HTTPClient supports proxy functionalities?
That may help getting things done...

If you are interested, we can get into a discussion.
Maybe we should wait until our preliminary results are
available?

I would suggest to put both branches into different files and guard
the protected case with an action that verifies the condition.

Cocoon comes with a number of actions that provide such
functionality. Out of my head you may want to look at the
authentication framework or the SessionValidatorAction.

RE: URL Encoding

2002-12-20 Thread Volker Schneider
Hi Ludovic,

you can have problems because the URL encoder probably does encode the
leading semicolon and the equals symbol of the URL if you use URL rewriting.
Maybe you have to write a short method which avoids encoding these leading

Re: cocoon-session management.

2002-12-20 Thread Antonio Gallardo
Hi Hussayn:

I agree with you. In that case you lost the session tracking. Apparently
Cocoon manages his own sessions.

I think we need to make Cocoon to work with the Tomcat Sessions or (to be
more general) with the Servlet Container Session Management. In that way
all will be OK accross multiple web applications.

Yesterday I was reading about the new persistent session management in
Tomcat 4.1.x. I think we can make use of it. But, since Cocoon works with
the Java Servlet Specification 2.2 and not 2.3, this can be an issue to
resolve. I feel like you in that the session management is weak at the
current development of Cocoon. We need some improvement here to help
webapplication development. The best approach is try to be the most
closest to the specification 2.3.

At the end, for session management in only one application, the current
authentication framework is OK.

Sorry for the incoveniences. :-D

Antonio Gallardo.

Re: cocoon-session management.

2002-12-20 Thread SAXESS - Hussayn Dabbous
maybe there is a chance, if the following holds:

1.) your servlets run within your cocoon based webapp
2.) you access the servlets over "context:" or
"cocoon:" protocol.

I was previously talking only about the "http:"
protocoll. For the other two protocols i might
be wrong in the use case described above.

SAXESS - Hussayn Dabbous wrote:

cocoon preserves session when you keep within your

problem:

If you are specifying a source over the http: protocol,
cocoon simply opens another HTTPClient request. This
request does NOT preserve the session state!

I am talking about following setup:

You have two separate webapplications not necessaryly
running in the same container! One app is the cocoon
application. The other app is a session based webapp.

Now you setup a pipeline, which gathers data from the
other webapp. Here you are lost.

What basically is missing: The session state is
usually preserved within cookies, or by URL-rewriting.
If sessions are cookie based, we need to pass the session
cookie through cocoon. And this is definitely not implemented
yet. Or my understanding of the cocoon code is absolutley
wrong ;-)

i'm currently working together with another developer on a
general solution. We are investigating severeal approaches.

Currently we are looking at the idea to add another
protocol to cocoon, or enhance the http protocol. There
was the idea to enhance the new webproxy generator, but
we want to check out first, if the protocol enhancement
would do a better job here. It may be a more general
approach...

I made some basic tests and things work fine. I expect to
write some preliminary results tonight or tomorrow.

As i see multiple requests on this theme i get convinced
there is severe need for this feature.

I want to inform you, that this enhancement is a commercially
triggered work. The participants in the project are beeing

I'd like to see more projects of this kind. So also individual
programmers could can benefit ...

RE: xmlform and different output formats

2002-12-20 Thread Josema Alonso
Hello,

I assume the user can choose between the formats at the last page of the
form, right?

If so, I think you could use a sitemap parameter. You could then make this:
First, you get the value in the model at that page step.

Second, you could make the value available to the sitemap via a parameter.
I usually get the sitemap parameters in the act method. You could get the
data submitted by the user from the model there and send it to the sitemap.
I usually follow what is said at
http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/userdocs/concepts/actions.html

Finally you have the pipeline defined with a parameter selector, so you
could serialize or transform the data accordingly.

I'm not that expert at this, but hope it helps.

Josema.

hello,

I need some help for the xmlform. I would like to create a
application that runs multiple forms and at the end outputs
some data to the user. at these stage the user should have
the possibility to get the outputted data in different
formats.
how can this approach be done. I thought about giving some
parameters to the page, but first how to add parameters and
second how to get theme in the action and apply the appropraite
stylesheet?

any suggestions are welcome.

[Question] Re: cocoon-session management.

2002-12-20 Thread Emmanuil Batsis (Manos)

I'm in a similar situation (but without cocoon) and investigating the
HttpClient [1](from commons). HttpClient can hadle cookies which makes
it a session-able HTTP client.

My question here is, does it make sense to try and build a generator for
Cocoon with the above? I am under the impression that sitemap logic is
not session-aware (as a client of remote applications).

I had the same problem. I do not really understand it, but moving
xerces, xalan and xmlapis.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/endorsed
solved it. I suspect the reason is, that a incompatible version of Trax
is shipped with java 1.4

If you only want to restrict a page, why not simply setting up
an authentication framework? I did it with container based
authentication, but never tried with cocoon-authentication.

If you want to differently on different restricted pages, my approach
does not work well. Maybe this can be done much better with
cocoon authentication.

By the way, does it make sense to split this task as follows:

use the container for authentication
use cocoon for authorisation

By this i could build up very sophisticated authorisation
schemes while letting the container bother with the login...

If this makes sense i would be interested how this could be
set up.

RE: XPath problem in Cocoon?

2002-12-20 Thread Luca Morandini
Joerg,

indeed, namespaces could be a problem when you forget to properly use them... but not
in this particular problem.

The code Anna sent us works just fine on my Cocoon, hence, I think the problem lies
with Anna's configuration, moreover, I
experienced nasty bugs with Xalan already.

You must compile and configure the tomcat-apache connectors (mod_webapp or mod_jk)
See solutions in: http://www.galatea.com/flashguides/apache-tomcat-4-unix.xml or
other...
