[CODE4LIB] 2013 DLF Forum Call for Proposals

2013-04-29 Thread Louisa Kwasigroch
2013 DLF Forum Call for Proposals
Austin, Texas, November 3-6, 2013

The 2013 Digital Library Federation (DLF) Forum is seeking proposals for
presentations, panel discussions, workshops, research updates, and
hands-on, problem-solving sessions.

The Digital Library Federation is a robust and diverse community of
practitioners who advance research, teaching and learning through the
application of digital library research, technology and services. The
Forum is a working meeting where DLF members come together to discover
better methods of working through sharing and collaboration. It serves as
a resource and catalyst for collaboration among digital library
developers, project managers, and all who are invested in digital library
issues.

Participation is open to all those interested in contributing to and
playing an active part in the successful future of digital libraries,
museums, and archives services and collections. In that spirit, and to
maximize the Forum¹s benefit and better facilitate the community¹s work,
the Forum¹s schedule will provide many opportunities to actively engage
and network.

For the 2013 DLF Forum, the Program Planning Committee is requesting
proposals within the broad framework of digital collections and their
effect on libraries, museums and archives services, infrastructure,
resources, and organizational priorities. Proposals should strive to
contribute to the following topics:

* Digital technology design

* Management and assessment

* Data

* Collaboration

We welcome proposals on these and other areas from current community
members and non-members who are interested in joining the DLF community.
For more detailed examples, please see the 2012 DLF Forum schedule:
http://www.diglib.org/forums/2012forum/2012-dlf-forum-schedule/
http://www.diglib.org/forums/2012forum/2012-dlf-forum-schedule/.

Session genres include:

* Presentations and Panels: Traditional lecture format with
question-and-answer sessions. Speakers are requested to use only half of
the allocated time for the presentation, including how they wish to engage
the DLF community in their work. The second half of the session should
focus on conversations about next steps, engagement with the community,
and clarification of points raised during the presentation.

* Workshops:
 In-depth, hands-on training about a tool, technique,
workflow, etc. You can recommend a topic or trainer, or you can volunteer
to share your own expertise.

* Research Updates: An opportunity for those working in digital
collections research to present their preliminary findings for community
feedback and discussion.

* Working Sessions:
Creative problem solvers, including project managers,
developers, and/or administrators, gather to address a specific problem.
This does not have to be a computational problem. The approach can be
applied to workflow issues, metadata transformations, or other complex
problems that would benefit from a collective, dynamic solution approach.

* Community Idea Exchange: A modified poster session. Presenters will have
the opportunity to interact with Forum participants to discuss their
current research projects, and/or demonstrate tools or services they have
developed or are using in their digital library environment. Demos must
include a poster element.

I've used DokuWiki as a CMS for several website projects. The default theme
is no great shakes, but you can theme it to look like anything and there
are hundreds of plugins. I think the syntax it uses is much friendlier than
that used by Mediapress.

http://dokuwiki.org/

I've also been curious about Octopress. Nominally a blogging layer for
Jekyll, with the new version I think it can probably work as a CMS. It uses
Markdown as the syntax.

 Has anyone worked with file based CMSes,and do you have a recommendation
 for one with simple backend?

 One of the issues with the CMS is that databases don't make sense to people
 without background in them. I want to look at static file based CMSes with
 the goal of finding something that is easier to write instructions on doing
 maintenance and backups for than is a database based CMS.

I'd like to throw in another recommendation on Dokuwiki. Out of the box, I'd
call it about 80% of a solution, as there are some things I've wanted to do
with it that have proven really difficult with existing modules strung
together, but overall, it has the potential to do the job of a CMS well for
many use cases. If you're willing to invest the time in developing custom
themes and plugins, it can do just about anything.

I've used DokuWiki as a CMS for several website projects. The default theme is
no great shakes, but you can theme it to look like anything and there are
hundreds of plugins. I think the syntax it uses is much friendlier than that
used by Mediapress.

I've also been curious about Octopress. Nominally a blogging layer for Jekyll,
with the new version I think it can probably work as a CMS. It uses Markdown as
the syntax.

I'm a big fan of middleman (http://middlemanapp.com). It's more coder-oriented,
but you're not locked into the horrible UI of a wiki product. Once it's set up,
it's good to go. There's lots of nice extensions for it, including a WYSIWYG
blog post manager/editor, and it's simple to code for.

I installed copybar (www.copybar.io) on a publib website where I freelance. For
all sorts of reasons--which are common for libs--their county server has a
moratorium on anything server-side, so a db-driven CMS isn't an option. Copybar
is pretty groovy and user-friendly but for the caveat that any content produced
in copybar (unless it's tied to another CMS like Wordpress) won't show for any
no-js browsers.

If basic HTML is an option, have you thought about a static site generator? Not
all websites need databases. In terms of ease (and, ah ..., Windows
compatibility) I've gotten totally behind Mixture (www.mixture.io) -- presently
in beta -- which has a pretty slick UI, can be templated, outputs raw HTML, and
has a nice live reload in the browser (also compiles SASS and stuff, so bonus).

Not sure if those help your situation, but I think both tools--especially
mixture--are the bee's knees.

We've been using Cascade Server for about 4 years and while the CMS itself uses
a database back, it publishes static HTML pages to whatever servers we want. I
came from a shop that had a disastrous implementation of a data driven CMS in
about 2005. So when we were shopping for a CMS I wanted something that would
produce static HTML.

I'm not sure if that's acceptable.

The alternate which works well in some shops is dreamweaver templates. With
someone smart doing the setup and documentation, I find them to be the best
thing in the world for simple content. Not to mention, a very inexpensive
solution.
