I'm a big fan of Johanna Rothman: http://www.jrothman.com/
Most of her writing centers on teams, project management, and hiring in
technology. It doesn't always translate easily to our glacial,
resource-strapped academic environments though.

Hi Riley,
GLPI looks cool, and I've heard of it. My particular need was less about tools
and more for training and information on how to manage a web development and
software engineering team, so the Leading Snowflakes book will be a perfect fit
(I think).

Thanks,

2014-07-03 Thread Roy Tennant
While we are gathering input on which day to hold the Code4Lib NorCal
event, I want to begin soliciting proposals for 20-minute prepared talks.
In case we receive more proposals than we have time for, I'm suggesting a
deadline of Sunday, July 20th to afford us time to select the ones we want
to hear like we do for the annual conference.

Please submit your proposals on this wiki page:

http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Prepared_Talk_Proposals

Meanwhile, over on the Google Group where we are doing the planning we will
start discussing how we want the day to unfold. If you want to be a part of
that, please sign up here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/code4lib-norcal

Thanks,

[CODE4LIB] Meetup streaming (was: Re: [CODE4LIB] Initial NorCal Code4Lib Meetup)

2014-07-03 Thread Cary Gordon
I would like to encourage NorCal and every other group to either stream or do
real-time participation.

I think that we will try to stream the next SoCal meeting over the Code4lib
YouTube channel. I haven't had great experiences doing "webinar" style
participation with this type of event. The technical side is fine, but it is
disruptive, and I prefer streaming with feedback/questions through IRC or
Twitter,

If any other group wants to do this, please contact me out-of-band, and I will
help you.

Thanks,

Cary

[CODE4LIB] Initial NorCal Code4Lib Meetup

2014-07-03 Thread Collier, Aaron
Good Morning,

The NorCal group has been discussing an initial meet up and we've settled on a
half-day (10am - 3pm) sometime during the last week of July.

The San Mateo office of OCLC Research has offered to host the event at 777
Mariners Island Blvd in San Mateo. Facilities include a 120-seat amphitheatre
and multiple rooms of various sizes for breakouts. OCLC will also sponsor lunch.

If you are in the area and available to attend, fill out this simple poll to
let us know which date works best for you.

Thanks!

Maybe it would be better to have an odd number of people for the group in
case of disagreement? 9 or 11 people would ensure nothing got stuck
half-way.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Community anti-harassment policy

2014-07-03 Thread Becky Yoose
Hi folks,

In the interest of documentation and keeping similar threads together (and
in the vein of Sean's comment about pull requests), I've started an issue
at https://github.com/code4lib/antiharassment-policy/issues/46 for folks
who want to hammer out the specifics there.

In addition, if you want to make changes to the
https://github.com/code4lib/antiharassment-policy docs and are not sure
where to start (or don't want to create an account, or just not sure what
the heck a 'pull request' means) give me a holler - it will at least give
me a small break from dealing with ILS In Transit location drama at MPOW
today. :c)

Cheers,
Becky

Pull requests welcome.

In particular, we'd need to think about how to shape the sanctions section,
including things like:

   - What's an appropriate sanction in non-conference setting X?
   - Who is empowered to enact sanctions?
   - If a participant feels they have been harassed, who do they contact
   and how?
   - possibly other stuff?

I think the conflict resolution part is in better shape, though it would
need a little cleanup for more universal (i.e., not conference-specific)
language.
