2016-01-12 Thread Tod Olson
Hi everyone,

We trying to set dates for Code4Lib Midwest. I just want to throw out potential
dates in case there is some big conflict that we’ve not noticed:

• July 7-8, Thu-Fri:primary candidate
• July 14-15, Thu-Fri: backup dates

Does anyone know of a big conflicting conference for either set of dates?

Best,

If you need another reason to come to Grand Rapids for C4LMW (other
than it's free), GR was voted Beer City USA in 2012 and 2013. At
last count, we had roughly 3 dozen breweries in the area, many near
the center of the city and this is not including brew pubs or
restaurants.

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Midwest 2013

2013-07-29 Thread Shawn Averkamp
*Code4Lib Midwest 2013
October 13-14
Pappajohn Business Building, University of Iowa
Iowa City, Iowa*

Please join us Sunday, October 13, and Monday, October 14, in Iowa City for
the Code4Lib Midwest 2013 conference! This informal conference will feature
short lightning talks, longer presentations, workshops, and breakout
discussion sessions covering technology in libraries, archives and museums
in the Midwest. A preliminary schedule can be found on the Code4Lib Midwest
wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest).
*
I’m not really a coder. Can I still come to Code4Lib Midwest?*

Absolutely! Code4Lib events are always open to people who don’t think of
themselves as coders but who want to learn more about using technology in
libraries and cultural heritage institutions. Not all of the talks and
breakout sessions will be about “code,” either. Topics like digital
preservation, digital media, and metadata are totally fair game at Code4Lib.

*How much does it cost? What are the logistics?*

Nothing! Registration for Code4Lib Midwest is free. Just add your name to
the list on the wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest), and
you’re registered. If you don’t have a wiki account and don’t want to sign
up for one, e-mail Shawn Averkamp (shawn-averk...@uiowa.edu) or Emily Shaw (
emily-f-s...@uiowa.edu) to be added to the list. A block of rooms has been
reserved in the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel at $99 per night for Saturday and
Sunday nights. More logistical information is available on the wiki.

*How do I propose a talk/workshop/discussion?*

Just add it to the wiki (http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest). We
have room for up to 20 presentations (15-20 minutes each) and around 20
lightning talks (5 minutes each), so don’t be shy. We want to hear about
what you’re doing.

Hope to see you there!

2013-05-03 Thread Shawn Averkamp
Hi all,

University of Iowa Libraries is looking to host the Code4Lib Midwest meetup
this year, and we could use your help selecting dates and gauging interest.

In previous years, the Midwest meetup was held in late summer, and we're
open to continuing that pattern, but we'd also like to offer late September
or early October when we can show off our brand new Learning Commons. We
also have no idea how many of you to expect, since this will be the first
Midwest meeting west of the Mississippi.

If you're interested in a Code4Lib Midwest this year, help us out by
signing up on the wiki (
http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Midwest_2013_planning) or by emailing me
or Emily Shaw (emily-f-s...@uiowa.edu) directly.

Hope to see you in Iowa City!

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib MidWest: Parking lot

2012-07-23 Thread Ranti Junus
Hi All,

For those who are driving directly to the MSU Libraries from your
city, we posted a map (PDF) showing the parking lot for visitors [1].
It's basically located next to the MSU Spartan Stadium. This map was
created when our back entrance (called the Red Cedar entrance) was
being renovated, so the map shows a detour to the library. Ignore that
detour mark and just go straight to the Red Cedar entrance after you
cross the bridge.

The parking fee will be covered by us if you park in that lot; we will
give you the parking permit before you leave.

Looking forward to see you all there!

thanks,

then a half day at either UIC or DU on the following day.

Hotels in Oak Park (adjacent to River Forest where Dominican is located)
are usually pretty reasonably priced, and public transit to campus is
definitely possible.

We have created a Doodle[1] poll to select potential weekends this
summer. Please also weigh in on if you prefer a Thursday/Friday meeting
or a Friday/Saturday. (Ideally keep discussion to the Code4Lib Midwest
group!)

[CODE4LIB] code4lib midwest regional meeting

2010-06-12 Thread Eric Lease Morgan
Below is a brief description of the Inaugural Code4Lib Midwest Regional
Meeting, but for HTML layout goodness complete with a couple of pictures and a
cheesy movie, see the blog posting and the temporary/hidden link. [1, 2]

Inaugural Code4Lib Midwest Regional Meeting

I believe the Inaugural Code4Lib Midwest Regional Meeting (June 11 12, 2010
at the University of Notre Dame) was a qualified success.

About twenty-six people attended. (At least that was the number of people who
went to lunch.) They came from Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois.
Julia Bauder won the prize for coming the furthest distance away — Grinnell,
Iowa.

We began with Lightning Talks:

 * ePub files by Michael Kreyche
 * FRBR and MARC data by Kelly McGrath
 * Great Books by myself
 * jQuery and the OPAC by Ken Irwin
 * Notre Dame and the Big Ten by Michael Witt
 * Solr Drupal by Rob Casson
 * Subject headings via a Web Service by Michael Kreyche
 * Taverna by Rick Johnson and Banu Lakshminarayanan
 * VUFind on a hard disk by Julia Bauder

We dined in the University's South Dining Hall, and toured a bit of the campus
on the way back taking in the giant marble, the Architecture Library, and the
Dome.

In the afternoon we broke up into smaller groups and discussed things including
institutional repositories, mobile devices interfaces, ePub files, and FRBR.
In the evening we enjoyed varieties of North Carolina barbecue, and then
retreated to the campus bar (Legend's) for a few beers.

I'm sorry to say the Code4Lib Challenge was not successful. Us hackers were
either to engrossed to notice whether or not anybody came to the event, or
nobody showed up to challenge us. Maybe next time.

There were fewer participants on Day #2. We spent the time listening to Ken
elaborate on the uses and benefits of jQuery. I hacked at something I'm calling
The Great Books Survey.

The event was successful in that it provided plenty of opportunity to discuss
shared problems and solutions. Personally, I learned I need to explore
statistical correlations, regressions, multi-varient analysis, and principle
component analysis to a greater degree.

A good time was had by all, and it is quite possible the next Midwest
Regional Meeting will be hosted by the good folks in Chicago.

For more detail about Code4Lib Midwest, see the wiki. [3]

2010-06-07 Thread Eric Lease Morgan
We are now up to sixteen registrants (Woot!)...

Here is our tentative Friday agenda for the Midwest Meeting:

  * 10 o'clock - Meet  greet
  * 10:30 - Show  Tell / Lighting Talks
  * Noon - Lunch at the Dining Hall
  * 1 o'clock - Tour of campus
  * 2:30 - Code4Lib Challenge
  * 3:30 - Hack Session
  * 6 o'clock - Social Event

But I wanted to especially highlight the Code4Lib Challenge. In one of
preplanning conference calls a number of months ago, the idea of a challenge
was proposed, and here is what we hope to do:

  1. from the lightning talks, pick one or two really really cool things
  2. present the selected ideas to library employees
  3. ask the employees to challenge the Meeting attendees
to solve a particular computing problem
  4. hope someone from the Meeting picks up the banner and hacks a solution
  5. present the solution back to employees at a later time

Or something like that. Wish us luck, and we'll let y'all know how it goes.

2010-03-10 Thread Eric Lease Morgan
Thank you for completing the Doodle poll, and based on that information, there
will be a Code4Lib Midwest Regional Meeting conference call tomorrow
(Thursday):

Who: anybody who wants to participate
   What: conference call
   When: Thursday, March 10 from 4 - 5 o'clock (Eastern time)
  Where: on the phone
Why: because planning is a good thing

If you want to participate, then you need to call the following telephone
number and use the access code:

  * phone number - (866) 469-3239
  * access code - 214 555 48

Let's try to keep the call to less then thirty minutes, and let's try to answer
the following questions, in priority order:

  * Where will the regional meeting take place?
  * When will the regional meeting take place, and for how long?
  * What is a rough agenda of topic?

To help with decision-making, see the wiki where there is a list of possible
attendees as well as a map of where they might be coming. [1]

If others from the midwest were to update the wiki with their possible

organize a conference call, and allow just about anyone to participate, in

ELM, I'm happy to help coordinate in whatever way you need.

Also, if we can find a drummer, we could do a blues trio (count me in on
 bass). I
could bring our band's drummer (a HUGE ND fan) down for a day or two if
 needed--he's awesome.

What I was thinking here was a possible presentation to library faculty/staff

one or two cool hacks or solutions that solved wider, less geeky problems.
Instead of tweaking Solr's term-weighting algorithms to index OAI-harvested
content it would be making journal articles easier to find. This would be
 an
opportunity to show off the good work done by institutions outside Notre Dame.

I was thinking it would happen on a weekday. There would be more stuff going
on here on campus, as well as give everybody a break from their normal work

so the poeple who stayed over night would not have to take so many days off of

R-, I don't think there is any set agenda for these things. If the event took
place in a big city where there were many people in the immediate area, then I
imagine the event would be a day-only sort of thing. People would be able to
come and go in one day. If the event took place in a more regional area, then
travel time increases and so might the need for an over-night stay.

If we were to host something here at Notre Dame, then I imagine something like
the following agenda possible starting in the mid-morning:

  1. meet greet
  2. share demonstrations
  3. eat lunch
  4. give a presentation to library staff
  5. have a hack session
  6. socialize in the evening
  7. go home the next day

There are plenty of inexpensive hotels in South Bend because of all of our

If you're going to host it at Notre Dame I would expect an agenda something
like this (do it on Saturday, 9/11)

1. meet greet (mid-morning)
2. Tailgate (noon)
3. Notre Dame Vs. Michigan (3:30)
4. presentation to library staff
5. hack session
6. go home

Can you get us in to the game, Eric? I'd come.

While I'm not in the Midwest, I think that any of these type of one day,
weekday, conferences are best done on a Monday or a Friday to allow for
less time off of work. Sure there are some disadvantages if work wants
to give you the travel days, but I could certainly sell 1 or 1.5 days
off from work a lot easier then 2 or 3.

I agree with this. I don't mind attending conferences on weekends, and
if a conference is on a Monday or Friday, I can spend the one day of the
weekend traveling and the other exploring the city where the conference
is held. It's also a lot for convenient for with a working spouse (with
a limited amount of vacation time available) and a 6 year old son.

Of course, some trips ara a little more difficult to plan. Two weeks
from tomorrow I'll be taking a business trip which will consist of three
days of meetings, and five days devoted to travel. The trip will take
me to Paris, Johannesburg, South Africa and a little town in Tanzania
called Morogoro.
