It's a BSD function iirc, Linux supports it too, but it's hardly
portable.

I'm all in favour of this idea. I think it would be very helpful. I'm not
a newbie, but I use the search command when I help someone find a channel
they're looking for, if I am unable to, or anyone else, is unable to help
them in the current channel.
