 Probably worth creating a unit test for the case where there is no namespace,
 though.

I took the liberty of creating that test case. I ran it against the previous
version of the code and the code with my updates. The non-namespaced attribute
test works with both, proving that the current functionality of handling
non-namespaced attributes has not changed.

Let me know if I can do anything else to help get this change commited.

Thanks,

Kurt

New Component Idea - Commons MetaData

2005-10-24 Thread James Carman
All,

JDK5 annotations allow us to supply metadata about classes, methods, fields,
packages, etc. But, the metadata has to be included in the source code!
Maybe we can come up with a standardized way to register metadata about a
class into some repository. A discussion at TheServerSide.com
(http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=37249) gave me the
idea that this could be standardized. The repository API could look
something like:

public interface MetaDataRepository
{
  public String getAttribute( Class c, AttributeName name );
  public String getAttribute( Package p, AttributeName name );
  public String getAttribute( Method m, AttributeName name );
  public String getAttribute( Field f, AttributeName name );
  public String getAttribute( Constructor c, AttributeName name );
}

An AttributeName would basically encapsulate a namespace/name combination,
so that different frameworks can have the same name with different
namespaces. We would also need to expose an API for modifying the MetaData
for a class, package, etc. so that users can hand-code this. There could
also be a discovery mechanism for automatically looking up metadata based on
some conventions (similar to how we are talking about it at TSS.com), so
that users can add metadata to a class without having the source code. We'd
also provide an adapter for JDK5 annotations (namespace = attribute class
name and name is the attribute name of the annotation type). We may want to
make the return type Object, also, so that attributes could take on more
complex types (like enums or whatever). Maybe we could start this project
in the sandbox to see how it shakes out?

Of course, we could just extend Commons Attributes! Didn't know that
already existed, duh!

I'm not a pool dev but I'll make some time to implement fixes for the
problems Mayur Naik found and submit patches.

While I'm at it would it be desirable to transition to the privately

defend against:

synchronized (aPool) {
 Thread.sleep(Integer.Max_Value);
}

by making anything that synchronized on this synchronize on a private field.

(in case you don't know the drill you might find some useful stuff in
http://www.apache.org/dev/,
http://jakarta.apache.org/site/getinvolved.html and
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/patches.html. please create a bugzilla

unless some one beats me to it, once the patch is available i'll add
myself to the dev list and review (as time permits).

 While I'm at it would it be desirable to transition to the privately

 defend against:

 synchronized (aPool) {
  Thread.sleep(Integer.Max_Value);

 by making anything that synchronized on this synchronize on a private field.

i'm not too bothered about (that kind of) malicious code: there are too
many ways the user of a library could subvert it.

it might (however) stop a user doing something equivalent through
carelessness or naivity. so probably worth doing. would need to add a
note to the documentation since this would change the semantics.

Add an assertOpen() to the addObject() method. This needs to be checked else
_factory.makeObject() may throw an NPE after close() has been called.

  probably. however, IMHO an object pool really needs to be thread safe.
  i've taken a quick look and think that perhaps it'd be better to fix any
  race conditions as the performance price that has to be paid for the
  design chosen. opinions?

 As Knuth put it ... premature optimization is the root of all evil.
 And Jackson:
 Rule 1. Don't do it
 Rule 2. (for experts only). Don't do it yet - that is, not until you
 have a perfectly clear and unoptimized solution.

 [From Bloch, Effective Java, Item 37]

 It's not only race conditions that might need to be fixed -
 Synchronization is required for reliable communication between
 threads as well as for mutual exclusion. [Ibid, Item 48]

 He says that modern JVMs have much lower overheads for synchronisation
 than the early releases, especially if the synchronisation is
 uncontended, as would be the case for single-threaded access.

 So I'd suggest doing enough synch to ensure that the user can use all
 the methods individually without needing to synchronise. Iterators
 would likely still need external synch (except when running
 single-threaded).

+1

BTW if any existing apache committers feel like helping out on any
commons components then i'd be glad to propose karma

This patch implements the a fix for the synchronization issues found by Mayur
Naik for GenericKeyedObjectPool.

This patch also removes synchronization on the getNumTests(),
incrementActiveCount(Object),
decrementActiveCount(Object), getActiveCount(Object), and
calculateDefecit(Object) private methods
because they are all only ever called from within a synchronized context.

 I'm not a pool dev but I'll make some time to implement fixes for the
 problems Mayur Naik found and submit patches.

 While I'm at it would it be desirable to transition to the privately
 head lock idiom to defend against intentionally malicious code? eg to
 defend against:

 synchronized (aPool) {
  Thread.sleep(Integer.Max_Value);
 }

 by making anything that synchronized on this synchronize on a private field.

+1 If possible, but one cannot always do this.

If a class is conditionally thread-safe, i.e. it needs external
synchronisation - then the appropriate lock object must be made
available to clients. E.g. HashTable needs external synch for its
Iterator [Bloch, Item 52]

Patches submitted.

  While I'm at it would it be desirable to transition to the privately
  head lock idiom
 it might (however) stop a user doing something equivalent through
 carelessness or naivity. so probably worth doing. would need to add a
 note to the documentation since this would change the semantics.
 opinions?

I have a number of pending patches: http://tinyurl.com/cauwd that I'd
like to see commited or rejected as I'm starting to feel no one cares
about them and it's becoming a pain to maintain my own patched pool
version. After that I'd be willing to implement the transition to the
private lock idiom.

Re: [pool] synchronization issues in Pool

2005-10-24 Thread Mayur Naik
Hi Oliver,

The tool is still a research prototype but I intend to release it in
the near future. I took a quick look and it seems like my tool might
not be very useful on the commons transaction code because that code
uses sophisticated locking primitives which the current version of my
tool does not handle and hence will produce lots of false alarms
(though we have plans to extend it to handle those primitives).
Nevertheless, I will run my tool on that code in the near future and
get back to you if I find any issues.

Best,
-- Mayur

On 10/23/05, Oliver Zeigermann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi Mayur,

 that really sounds like a cool tool. You results are also quite
 impressive. I actually can not comment on them, but would like to know
 if your tool is available anywhere?

 If not - and I suppose so - could you also run it on the commons
 transaction code where any race condition really would be very
 harmful. I already know of one that has been fixed in CVS, but not in
 a final release.

 Thanks in advance

 Oliver

Re: [ALL] Continuum (was Re: svn commit: r328231 snip/)

2005-10-24 Thread Brett Porter

We can open this up for discussion.

This is the reason I just sent it to myself for now. But we do have a
copy of Continuum running on the Maven zone that can be used (its out of
date right now - it will be updated tomorrow for the new release).

There are limitations with the current Maven 1.x support of extended
projects so it may not be immediately viable for all projects (though
certainly the Ant builds can be run through it with the additional
configuration).

Another concern is the possible duplication of nags with gump (though
obviously these are significantly different approaches, they are both
going to complain if it is broken).

For now, I'll leave this one going to me for testing. From there, I
think it should be up to the individual components, including what build
intervals are appropriate if it is to go to the dev list.

Cheers,
Brett
