Only part of the problem :( There is also firmware upgrade - since moko11 (tried ~1 week) I did not lose any calls/sms. Although the issue with capacitive screens remain - it appears that it is not possible to create a really small stylus for use with a small keyboard containing many buttons. In my very humble opinion, I believe that a worthy sacrifice in order to create more mass appeal for the Freerunner (+future models). If it gave a mass market appeal. If! But what it the appeal of a capacitive screen? Certainly not the stylus-free operation, as the current resistive screen also does that just fine. OpenCellId : How to contribute simply with my moko ?
Hi all, I read some emails on the list about cellhunter, opencellid and other projects. Since it is hard to get a conclusion by reading them, I would like to know how I can contribute easily to OpenCellid with my freerunner. I want to do it well (not only giving the cell id and gps location, but have enough metadata whichs describe the precision, the phone model (gta02rev6), etc. Is Cellhunter the best way to do it ? --If so, can I install it on my Hackable:1 (debian based) ? --If not, is there any finger friendly soft ? Since I saw there is currently no cell in France, I can talk to the french openmoko community and we can work on it ! I restarted ophonekitd and tried to release the resource again. ophonekitd ended without error message, and mdbus complained: /org/shr/ophonekitd/Usage: ReleaseResource failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply I hope this isn't too hard to fix. I plan on using scripts requesting the CPU for all data-gathering apps (tangogps, cellhunter) so the phone don't suspend while they are in use. And I also plan on requesting the display for mokomaze and tangogps. Because these should be on for a long time without touch input. Actually, I have two tangogps icons - one that keeps the backlight on for car navigation, and one that merely reqeust the cpu for data gathering without external power. I assume ophonekitd uses reference counting, so multiple apps can request the display/cpu at the same time? And release one after another, with suspend happening only after the last user has quit? Is there a way to check what resources are held and by who? Sort of like a ls command for resources? Is it possible to forcibly release the display so the phone can work normally again - except for the obvious reboot way? However, I do not remember which kernel is that one using - probably om-testing 2.6.24 (and the backup should have the modules installed too). Also, this is an internal backup, not one to put on your SD card. You probably would prefer to use the following method to get an updated rootfs. get a FSO console image and its kernel (use 2.6.24, not 2.6.28 or you will get weird issues with everything, especially suspend/resume), then blast a qtextended tarball to it (i have a 4.4.3 snapshot built on that same address, it's called qtefso.tgz) and then apply the echo patch from http://www.csamuel.org/2009/01/08/echo-suppression-fix-for-qt-extended-442-on-openmoko-neo I believe that 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 are binary-compatible so it should pose no problem to use it. good luck! But, and this is one of the strengths of the Freerunner (+ future models), is the ability to run multiple distributions - we have hacker friendly distros with full keyboards and end-user distros with big friendly letters and smart ways to handle imprecision. Although the issue with capacitive screens remain - it appears that it is not possible to create a really small stylus for use with a small keyboard containing many buttons. In my very humble opinion, I believe that a worthy sacrifice in order to create more mass appeal for the Freerunner (+future models). If it gave a mass market appeal. If! But what it the appeal of a capacitive screen? Certainly not the stylus-free operation, as the current resistive screen also does that just fine. For images, I guess it would be okayish to use normal locale information to open banner_LANGUAGE.png, like banner_fi.png, in all places where such images with text are used, and give easy-to-change GIMP .xcf files for the community where the text part can be easily changed. .xcf so that the text would be editable and font type and size would be in the file for changing, in addition to possibility of having different layers. If there is text in an image, it's probable they won't get changed that often so the translation burden should be on ok level as well. But I do not know about edc files. mmh, i don't think it should be handled by the program. if you are using fso and want to use your telephone you always should have gsm up and running. look out for paroli or other gsm subsystem, it does not have to be zhone. sorry, but i do not want to mess around with the gsm subsystem. this will lead in more problems than it solves. Just alter the .desktop file or write a starter bash script. i really suggest you have a better look at the code. it uses timepoints.
animation simply modifies properties of objects - doesnt RENDER at points in
time. when you begin an anim it flags things at point A. then when the next
frame tick rolls around it calculates whatever properties (size, position,
alpha etc.) and applies those. applying does NO rendering. all it does is set
values in data structures. small values. its very efficient. after all the coee
that is transitioning opject values finishes setting the properties - and
everything goes idle THEN it decides to draw/render - whatever the state is at
now. if the animation already completed (eg animation was set to take 0.1
second, but actually 0.2 seconds has elapsed since the start) all properties
will just instantly be set to the final state and only that rendered.
if you want to find out how the code works ask those that wrote it. dont assume
from things you read here :) it's not making a movie per icon. it's simply
modifying a few parameters (maybe a grand total of 50 of them) per frame. and
then it only renders the frames it CAN render. if u set the framerate to 200fps
- it sure as hell wont calculate 200 frames per second as it will be render
limited and will only calculate what it can. the code is very smart and does
just what is needed.
Maybe we ought to use a modified duke nukem as an app launcher interface
instead of enlightenment. Duke has a _better_ framerate for scrolling
and zooming - in 3D!
and runs in 8bpp and doesnt alpha blend, doesnt do interpolated scaling. doesnt
do a tonne of things.
btw - scrolling issues were also a problem of the event loop in some ways and
has been fixed in the meantime - but you are unlikely to see those fixes until
fso/shr or om2008.x update. (basically it was getting and actually responding to
more mouse events than it could handle delaying rendering even more than it
should have been 0 i fixed that. it shouldnt have been doing it but somewhere
along the way a excess mouse move filter got removed and i dont know when/where
so i put one back in). it all went smooth again.
Shoot at icons to start apps. Fire at the process list to kill. kill -9
using a bigger gun. ;-)

I wish people though more about efficiency. One can have all sorts of
wonderful effects by precomouting some stuff _once_, and then use plain
bit block transfers. 1990 game machines was weaker than the FR, but that
did not seem to be a problem then.
as per my other mail. the reason i DIDNT do this is that there is a tradeoff -
every precompute means u have to store it. storing means using up more ram, and
using less cpu. you give up one resource for another. ALSO you need to
intelligently differentiate dynamic data vs static. lets say u have a vidoe
that changes data every frame - there is zero point in computing a scaled
version and making a copy of it to keep as next frame it will be different.
same for when the image or data keeps changing size. each frame its a new size.
again - pointless to keep a copy. its not so easy just to precompute it makes
coding life harder as the programmer now needs to do this in advance. you want
the api to figure it out for u and just do it by magic. as i said - i have a
patch that added a scalecache that does this, but it also introduced bugs and
thus isnt in. i havent had time ot come back to it lately - but its on my todo
list.
believe it or not evas's software engine is REALLY efficient and fast. it gets
both quality and speed. it plays some other tricks you barely even know exist.
i know about all these game engine tricks- i started life writing game engines
in assembly. i have just specifically chosen to handle certain paths for
certain reasons. and to date those

are flagged as non-visible by default. I'm assuming that even when a
element in the GUI is flagged visible=0 that it still calculates its
position onscreen, so that if you have 20 icons in Illume then you're
trying to scroll at least 100 transparent png images. ('icon' image,
background, shine, highlight, shadow - there are actually 9 png images
specified, plus the icon image itself) Pasted at the end is the entire
group e/fileman/desktop/icon/fixed from default.edc. You can see that
each icon actually contains eight png images, and twelve programs,
including six that specify animated transitions.
evas does not load the data for an image file until needed. it only loads
header. also when its in the theme its no longer a png. it's a much simpler
encoding of argb data in the .edj (still compressed tho based on the .edj
source options). it also only loads one copy once. every extra copy is just a
reference to the existing one. so as such you are only paying the cost of an
extra object, not an extra image. be it a rectangle or an image - same cost
pretty much. also remember the animation of the fade is a redraw, as is the
scroll. so they equate to the same thing actually. simply the fact that it
draws under and above 1 icon a base and overlay is the extra rendering cost.
this of course means dynamic stretching of it. also for calculations - its a
really simple one to calculate a move of an obj - its simply doing some sets of
x,y, integers. its nothing really unless you are talking 1000's of objects...
it also doesn't help that Enlightenment is advanced enough to perform
some very nice scaling tricks - like specifying that 6 pixels inward
from each edge should not be stretched away from that edge, so for
example you can have a 13x13 PNG that functions as a 6-pixel border,
with the central pixel being scaled as large as needed, while the edges
are only stretched in one dimension, along the edge. Wonderful feature

actually nothing floating point here at all. all integer. evas actually scales
quite fast. considering its scaling everything on the fly... with
interpolation and/or supersampling. it has no code to cache such work (yet).
if i were you - i'd wait for the scalecache :) i have demo code that does it
but it .. is buggy. basically evas will detect is scales something to a
specific size for more than N draws then it generates a copy and keeps it and
re-uses it. :) so no need to work in the theme as its done runtime.
But to make the user experience worse, whenever those extra pngs are
made visible or invisible, it uses an animated fade-in/fade-out. So
every time you drag to scroll, it's busy animating a fade-out on the
previously highlighted icon, animating a fade-in on the one under
your finger, and scrolling all the transparent and invisible PNGs.
The effect is quite attractive, if only the FR had the horsepower
to manage it while running a phone, GPS, and frameworkd. :(
I see no fade effect. When I click an icon, it gets the glass
effect. It appear with a slight delay, but there is

Anybody given this some thought? Obviously it would make it just a mp3 player, but a polished and feature rich one at least. OK, so it's been on the wiki for a while now, to use the FR and accelerometers as a wireless mouse. I even bought a bluetooth USB adapter so I could use it as such, since I was under the impression it was already done in Remoko. It's not, all I got was a wireless touchpad. Some time ago, I saw a project to build Rockbox as an application. Any news about that ? I think it's far better as it allow you to use other functionalities while playing music. For both case, I think touchscreen can be a problem. I've never seen a touchscreen interface to Rockbox. (But maybe there is a hidden one) Anyway, porting can be a goo programming challenge and a way to tell to the world : look how open hardware and software are good. Once again I write about something I shouldn't write about at all since I don't know how it works. I could be very, very wrong here... just guessing: I got a feeling that no calculation (no effects) is faster than this optimal code. OM2008.0808 and earlier was quite fast and I think adding all kinds of effects is a step backward. No eye candy means that one could play music, etc. when scrolling. Do we really need illume? Why not something lighter with less/no visual effects, etc.? What happened with back to the basics? simultaneous multiple audio sources and destinations
All, I'm aware of at least one phone(i) where the audio capability on the device is prioritized to voice calls and the audio runs as a singleton process such that you cannot have the option to have simultaneous voice call and media player sound routed to headset or switch between them. Is this the case with Freerunner? Does anyone know about other devices and whether they are similarly restricted or not - Symbian, Blackberry, Android, etc.? I am aware of PJSIP and it's local bridge capability as a potential example of what I'd like to do - sort of a peer to peer conference application with local media server rather than network based. Yea, it would be nice to run as an app with a usable phone distro, but I doubt there's anywhere near the hw resources to do that nicely. Responsivness is a big limitation of gta02 most of the time just as a phone. The delay from action to sound must be on the order of 500-1000ms, and that's affected by other apps already running. In this case developers may prefer to not port the kernel and use a well tested kernel for the virtual hardware. But... how many of that devices exists now? While I suppose in the future we should see a lot of closed devices but vmware capable. These will attract a lot of Linux users that actually still do not buy a freerunner due to it's cost and hardware/software limitation. If that file does not exist after running the program then something really bizarre or horrible is happening. Suggestions: 1) Try using the mplayer backend just to see if it works. Edit /etc/pythm.conf and change the backend item. 2) Run pythm-bin from a command line and see if anything useful is reported. You can ignore messages about locales and deprecation. If all the buttons are greyed out and the file list is empty, that suggests that the backend is failing to load. In turn, that could possibly imply a missing python library. I don't think scalecache can make everything as smooth as the good old GTK theme, but it would be nice if I am wrong. it's really nothng to do with the the fading effects. 3 main reasons 1. om2008 theme has a black background. drawing a solid color is half the memory access bandwidth of drawing an image - even when not scaled. 2. it used the 16bit engine (the main main main reason for speed is this) 3. indeed icons where simple - even the label was simple text. the illume theme just inherits from e17's default. the text here includes a soft dropshadow - that shadowed text is draw.. believe it or not.. with 25 text draws in addition to the text, so 26. so it actually draws 26x the text for labels compared to the om2008 theme. the illume theme really just adds a few elements over e17's default - which is focused on a desktop. this just saves work for upstream to go make special themes for illume - i'm not happy with illume anyway. it's had a lot of compromises and things done quickly to meet requests, so until i give it some of the attention it needs to fix it up, it isn't going to have upstream's theme really change as it is currently just on minimal effort' to make it work. keep working on themes YOU want - make the ui the way YOU like. that is the point of themes being so flexible - they can do a LOT. they alsoo have a very big affect on performance. N.B. the default e17 theme and illume work like a charm on more modern embedded systems (phones as well) with more modern soc's - even with software rendering, so the eyecandy is worth it. freerunner is just a fairly pathological case in that it has incredibly low compute/draw power and a LOT of pixels to fill. if you ask me the right design would have been something more like qvga lcd if you changed nothing else on the device. i otherwise liken it to putting a lawnmower engine into a ferrari body - the screen LOOKS nice, like the ferrari, but don't expect it to go well. Hi, broken record MPD (and many other players) already plays Ogg/tremor just fine. Why don't you try and improve those players rather than reinvent the wheel? Well, the mplayer ipk available in the FSO repositories doesn't have tremor linked in. I can't find an mpd ipk. I think an EFL/elementary or GTK frontend will be faster. So - here's a front end that will use mplayer (mostly) and use other integer based decoders available (but aren't used by mplayer) where needed. Eventually, if all the requirements are fulfilled by mplayer, it'll just revert to being a front end. Sorry, this thread got overlooked until I just ran a message search for subject 'opkg'. :( The problem seems to be happening in the script that creates the Packages.gz file - several packages have nothing but filename and md5, which doesn't seem right, but the problem-causers (like the wireshark/tshark packages I contributed) seem to be problems parsing the control file within the ipk. Specifically, it doesn't seem capable of ignoring empty lines at the end of the file, but rather appends them to the last field. In the case of the wireshark packages that field is Source. (in addition, somehow there's a stray 'T' on a line by itself in the control file for wireshark - that was just my stupid error, though I wouldn't have anticipated it would break the feed) I'm fixing the wireshark packages to have no empty lines at the end of the control file. Odd. After the hourly script run, wireshark package is missing from the feed, though it still appears on the opkg.org site. Will see what happens. Looking further, it seems that after I upload the new ipk, it no longer lists the package link (its new opkg.org URL) under 'direct-download link' in the opk upload section, likely the reason it's left out of the feed update. I pasted the original data for tshark back in and updated the prepended 0_, will see what happens at midnight. (It'd be nice if opkg.org could look up a named dependency locally and fill in the link - I had to edit the dependancies manually to reflect filename changes when it prepended 0_ and 1_) Also odd: I'd swear there was a package rating on Wireshark, but after the correction it's back to 0. Sorry, I overlooked your earlier related thread until I ran a message
search for subject 'opkg'. :(
Reading through Packages.gz, several packages have nothing but filename
and md5, which doesn't seem right. It seems on closer examination that
those are all ones listed with the 'return value: 2' error. Likely the
error occurs because it in fact knows no package named, for example
voicenote, only a package with a filename voicenote_0.3_arm.ipk.
Those packages, manually downloaded, also fail to extract via ar x
with the error invalid ar magic - I smell a connection, where the
feed-building script cannot extract the archive to parse the control
file. I'm unsure what the cause of the 'ar x' failure is.
The segfaulters (like the wireshark/tshark packages I contributed) seem
to be emerging when the hourly repo update script parses the control
file within the ipk. Specifically, it doesn't seem capable of ignoring
empty lines at the end of the file, but rather appends them to the last
field parsed. In the case of the wireshark packages that field is
Source. (in addition, somehow there was a stray 'T' on a line by
itself in the control file for wireshark - that was just my stupid)
Liquidwar has ${SRC}\n as the source, and pythm also has a blank line
embedded in the source field. So it seems the segfaults are packages
with spare newlines in the control file... Does the official syntax
for the control file permit or prohibit newline-at-end?
I'm fixing the wireshark packages to have no empty lines at the end of
the control file. ;)
Odd. After the hourly script run, wireshark package is missing from
the feed, though it still appears on the opkg.org site. Will see what
happens. Looking further, it seems that after I upload the new ipk, it
no longer lists the package link (its new opkg.org URL) under
'direct-download link' in the opk upload section, likely the reason
it's left out of the feed update. I pasted the original data for
tshark back in and updated the prepended 0_, will see what happens at
midnight. (It'd be nice if opkg.org could look up a named dependency
locally and fill in the link - I had to edit the dependancies manually
to reflect filename changes when it prepended 0_ and 1_)
UPDATE: Nope, it turns out it placed it near the top of the Packages.gz
file instead of alphabetically, and I missed it at first.
Also odd: I'd swear there was a package rating on Wireshark, but after
the correction it's showing 0.
