[QtExtended] Basic speed comparison

2009-04-14 Thread Franky Van Liedekerke
Hi all,

for those interested:

I've done a basic speed comparison with QtE based on a SHR build (the lite
image, many things stripped from it, so it is comparable with the FSO nox
image), the FSO nox image and QtMoko (the debian version created by Radek).
Since I compared 2.6.28 kernel versions, I didn't include the current
qt-extended-improved version from Karadog.
The SHR and FSO images were installed using my install script. QtMoko
already came prepared :-)
I ran all 3 versions from a user perspective (so no console work done after
install). Since all 3 use the same QtE I'm not commeting on ease-of-use or
menu structure or stuff alike.

1) SHR image: had some issues installing the correct atd version, after that
it worked ok. Interface seemed sluggish, although resume seemed better than
the rest (because on resume, you immediately had an image, even though it
took a second before that image became responsive).
2) QtMoko: interface also very slow (probably the kernel is not yet fully
optimized built for openmoko, or maybe qtopia 4.5 is the cullprit).
Sometimes the impression that it missed (even refused) the touching of an
icon, even on the homescreen (btw Radek: delete of a recorded voice note
crashed that app for me ...). Launching other apps also slow.
3) FSO: you guessed it, the best :-) I tested the basic nox image (from
April 5th, since later version don't have ssh working anymore) and the
latest andy-tracking kernel. Interface and apps are respond within
acceptable user-experience-timeframes.

The 2.6.24 version of Radek is still ok, since that's the only version where
bluetooth works reliably from within QtE. Even on 2.6.28 bluetooth is
working ok (probably better, since lots of bluetooth bugfixes made it to the
mainstream kernel and bluez4 is more stable than bluez3), but QtE is not
compatible with bluez4 due to different dbus calls/responses. Work is needed
here and any volunteer is welcome.

Hi Franky,
the kernel is andy-tracking with moredrivers config, only bluetooth is
built as modules. It would be interesting to find out where the problem
is. One thing would be to use the rootfs with the FSO kernel. I have
also impression that running from SD card is much faster. And last
thing - i just moved back to old QT because of bug that i cant enter
SMTP password in email client. The updated images can be get from QtMoko

Not yet but if you can provide a bunch of Japanese flashcard collections
I will look into making it compatible with those.

I think it would be great to have only one format for the cards, for
 desktop and phone applications.

No it is all new code written mainly by Noufal Ibrahim with improvements
 from ezuall and me.

Would it make sense to reuse the engine of other project? For what I
have understood, this kind of software (and Parley) implement algorithms
to schedule the cards proposed to you. These aim at optimising your
learning, by asking you more often what you don't know, and less what
 you have already acquired.

If you don't go for reuse, do you plan to implement such features?

It is on the TODO list. Anyone that would like to dive into this is
welcomed. Perhaps some libs or code of other flashcard applications can
be ported to openmoko and reused by this application.

 Thanks,

Re: Intone (0.24) Elementary based mplayer frontend

2009-04-14 Thread c_c

Hi,

Oh - and paroli gives me an error that it wants to replace default.edj
owned by elementary theme. Is that related by any chance?

The elm theme we install sets the text color in elm-entries to white rather
than black.

Ah! That explains it. Hmmm - Well, it looks like I'll have to see if I can
change over my entry's (there's only 1) background to black. But there must be
a better way - we surely can't have changes applied system-wide based on the
theme used for one App.
Frankly, I'm not all that adept at elementary - I guess someone else will have
to show us a way forward.

Intone-video problems!! Help !

2009-04-14 Thread c_c

Hi,
Well, seeing that there was a need for a video playing front end for mplayer -
I thought I'll make a new app (based on Intone) that fulfills this need.

Here are the problems I'm facing :-
1. I finally found out that I can create 2 windows using elementary, 1 for
mplayer to play the video in (using -wid) and one for the controls. I've sized
the windows to 640x400 for the window where the video shows up and 640x80 for
the controls.
But I can't seem to get to see the main window (the one that has the
controls) at all. It works fine on my desktop - but I'm not using illume there.

2. The video playing window is centered on the screen. Is there a way I can set
the positions of these window's? Or do I need to look for a different solution.

3. Is there a way to embed a window in the main window of an elementary app?

4. As far as I can see, mplayer uses the entire window (whose handle is passed
to it with wid) to play the video. Or is it possible to have it use only part
of the window?

Right now I have a proof of concept - but it's not controllable since I can't
see the window with the controls. Otherwise I can see video in the window (slow
and out of sync with sound) - but it's not too bad overall ;-) I thought it
would be far worse.

Hopefully, someone out there can help. Thanks.

i think the config of illume on the neo forces windows to be
maximised, so even if your windows is 20 x 20, it will fill the whole
screen. either you need to modify this behaviour, or fit it all in one

Hi Franky,

I downloaded:

from: http://downloads.openmoko.org/distro/unstable/daily/om-gta02/20090412/

Then, untared both fso-image-nox-om-gta02.tar.gz and the modules on to the
second partition (ext2) on the SD card. Copied the uImage to uimage.bin on
to the first partition (vfat).

Then ran the changes from your script. Removed the old modules, as
fso-image-nox-om-gta02.tar.gz contains modules for 2.6.28 r2, not r3.

I'll try tomorrow on the phone I guess and see if that's any better. Apart
from the WSOD, it all seemed to be working pretty well. Call quality was
good.

I didn't use the kernel you mentioned, because don't have the modules for it.

I think paroli might play a role here. The elm theme we install sets the

that is why I chose that path. So if you need black text and can't see

I use the same kernel+modules, but I use the fso-nox image from a few days
older (I thought I mentioned it at the top of my script but it seems I
forgot that comment), because newer fso-nox images have no ssh connectivity
(it seems the usb hotplug isn't detected ..).
But I never used the tar.gz way, so I can't comment on it ...

 Hi Franky,

 I downloaded:
 fso-image-nox-om-gta02.tar.gz

 modules-2.6.28-andy-tracking+gitr10+901d73fe51f33032b34b2ae5612eb863ec90532a-r3-om-gta02.tgz

 uImage-2.6.28-andy-tracking+gitr10+901d73fe51f33032b34b2ae5612eb863ec90532a-r3-om-gta02.bin

 from:
 http://downloads.openmoko.org/distro/unstable/daily/om-gta02/20090412/

Then, untared both fso-image-nox-om-gta02.tar.gz and the modules on to the
second partition (ext2) on the SD card. Copied the uImage to uimage.bin on
 to the first partition (vfat).

Then ran the changes from your script. Removed the old modules, as
 fso-image-nox-om-gta02.tar.gz contains modules for 2.6.28 r2, not r3.

I'll try tomorrow on the phone I guess and see if that's any better. Apart
from the WSOD, it all seemed to be working pretty well. Call quality was
 good.

I didn't use the kernel you mentioned, because don't have the modules for
 it.

 Glen Ogilvie

Well, how do I do that?
From what I understand, mplayer can take over a full window given it's id. I

I think even if you have an empty string as login and password try putting

Right now I have a proof of concept - but it's not controllable since I
can't see the window with the controls. Otherwise I can see video in the
window (slow and out of sync with sound) - but it's not too bad overall ;-)
I thought it would be far worse.

Hopefully, someone out there can help. Thanks.

Do you think it will be possible (and simpler) to have the controls come up
as a transparent layer/app on top of the playing video (like on tapping).
Why I thought of this is that sometime ago a transparent illume terminal/
keyboard thread was there on the list and the package worked. I will try to
look in the archives for the link.

Also, there isn't anything like that in elementary yet.

I thought of this, since it would be most apt, but I don't know how to

IIUC the window id passed to mplayer does not have to be

Re: Intone-video problems!! Help !

2009-04-14 Thread Thomas Seiler
Hi c_c,

thanks for bringing another superb app to the neo!

I'm not an X11 expert, just trying to answer some of your questions
here... If I babble nonsense, please correct me.

 1. I finally found out that I can create 2 windows using elementary,
1 for mplayer to play the video in (using -wid) and one for the controls.
I've sized the windows to 640x400 for the window where the video
shows up and 640x80 for the controls. But I can't seem to get to
see the main window (the one that has the controls) at all. It
works fine on my desktop - but I'm not using illume there.

The problem is that your windows will end up stacked ontop of each other, and
here is why:

In X11, you do normally not position your windows on the screen. You have a
separate process, the window manager or WM, that takes care of this task.
That way, the user can finetune the behaviour of this desktop in one place,
instead of having to tune each and every app separately.

When you create a new window, the window manager will be consulted and will
come up with the best position/size for that new window. It will also draw some
decorations around it (border, titlebar, icons), so you have a consistent look.

On your desktop, where you have plenty of space, the best policy for the WM
is to arrange windows such that they don't overlap too much. On the neo
however, where screen space is a premium, the default strategy is to maximize
and center each window and forget about the borders, titlebars and stuff...

Both of your windows will simply be maximized and the one you create later will
end up on top of the stack. That way, you loose your controls.

 2. The video playing window is centered on the screen. Is there a way I can
set the positions of these window's? Or do I need to look for a different
 solution.

There is a way to have absolute control over the window by overriding the
window manager:

   EAPI void ecore_evas_override_set(Ecore_Evas* ee, Evas_Bool
override);

or in elementary:

   EAPI void elm_win_override_set(Evas_Object *obj, Evas_Bool override);

If you do this, the WM won't touch your window, and you will have to position
and size it yourself. Be aware though, that you also will have to take into
account any bars (taskbar / titlebar etc...) as you now work with raw
screen coords.
Usually, you have a normal window that is placed in the usual way by the wm.
You learn it's size and raw coordinates on screen and place the
overridden window
such that it fits inside.

 3. Is there a way to embed a window in the main window of an elementary app?

There is the elementary inwin. But this is not a X11 window with it's own wid.
As far as I know, there is currently no elementary widget for this.

 4. As far as I can see, mplayer uses the entire window (whose handle is
passed to it with wid) to play the video. Or is it possible to have it use
 only
 part of the window?

Not that I know. But what you can do, is to create a second X11 window, with
the override bit set. Position it manually, based on the co-ordinates of your
main window, and hand its wid to mplayer. the WM won't add any decoration
to it, thanks to the override bit, and mplayer will fill it with the
movie, so the
second window should not be recognizable as a window.

You should be able to get the position and sitze of your main elm_win using
something like this:

   EAPI void evas_object_geometry_get (const
Evas_Object *obj, Evas_Coord *x, Evas_Coord *y, Evas_Coord *w,
Evas_Coord *h);

Then you can simply create a second elm_win with the right coordinates, and
set the override bit _before_ you make the window visible.

Hope this helps...

Cheers,
Thomas

Hm, if you want to get fancy, there is a way to have windows of any shape
that are always on top as far as the window manager is concerned.

Check out:

   EAPI void ecore_evas_shaped_set(Ecore_Evas* ee, Evas_Bool shaped);

or in elementary:

   EAPI void elm_win_shaped_set(Evas_Object *obj, Evas_Bool shaped);

This is really really super slow on the neo, and it might not even work with
mplayer overlay windows. But normally, you would be able to make arbitrary
shaped windows. (Check out the elementary-test app, there is a transparency
test using this...)

You might also get some inspiration from this proof-of-concept keyboard code:
http://svn.om.vptt.ch/trunk/bubble-keyboard/src/bin/bubble-keyboard.c

Hope this is useful...

Cheers,
Thomas

Re: Intone (0.24) Elementary based mplayer frontend

2009-04-14 Thread Thomas Seiler
Hi,

c_c wrote:
Mirko Lindner wrote:
The elm theme we install sets the text color in elm-entries to white rather
than black.

Ah! That explains it. Hmmm - Well, it looks like I'll have to see if I can
change over
my entry's (there's only 1) background to black.
But there must be a better way - we surely can't have changes applied
 system-wide
based on the theme used for one App.

I think there is some infrastructure already there, working on the
edje group level...

Please check the Elementary wiki page:
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Elementary

Quoting the section about elementary envionment variables...

ELM_THEME - This sets the theme(s) to be used in order from most
preferential, to least, just with the theme name (minus the .edj extension)
with a : character delimiting the name. A simple personal theme would be
mytheme. If you wish to primarily use your personal theme, and then fall
back to another, you can do: mytheme:fallback.
This allows as many levels as you like. It is always assumed that the final
fallback theme is the default theme. A complex example would be:
 mytheme:fallback:systemfallback:othersystem. Remember theme names
like mytheme mean it assumes a mytheme.edj is in $HOME/.elementary/themes
OR if not found here first, it is in $ELM_DATA_DIR/themes under the same
 name.
Themes in your users theme dir always take precedence. A Theme name can
ALSO be a relative or full path to a file. In this case the fill filename
including extensions needs to be given. i.e.
 /path/to/file.edj:mytheme:fallback:
../../relative/path/file.edj:./dir/file.edj. With full or relative paths
 searching in order
still happens. Note that there is a convenience shortcut for the users home
directory of ~/. So if a theme element is ~/dir/file.edj then ~/ is expanded
 to
the the value of $HOME (the users home directory).

The way I understand this is that for every edje groud that is needed
to render a
widget, elementary will check the *.edjes in the order they are listed in the
ELM_THEME env variable. If a group is not found, it will check the next *.edj

Digging deeper, there are two undocumented API calls in Elementary.h:

EAPI void elm_theme_overlay_add(const char *item);
EAPI void elm_theme_extension_add(const char *item);

I think these allow the application to add their own themes app dependent *.edj,

either _before_ ELM_THEME (that would be elm_theme_overlay_add() )
or _after_ ELM_THEME (that would be elm_theme_extension_add() )

The relevant code is at:
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/browser/trunk/TMP/st/elementary/src/lib/elm_theme.c?rev=#L50

I have not tested this, but the code looks as if it would be in working shape.
Hope this is usefull nevertheless...

Cheers,
Thomas

[QtExtended] latest andy-tracking kernel

2009-04-14 Thread Franky Van Liedekerke
Hi all,

just to let you know:

I tried the latest andy-tracking kernel (gitr10 and gitr11 even)
together with an older fso-nox image (from April 4,
because newer fso images don't give me ssh access anymore).
This combo proves to be troublesome: no wake-up on sms receiving,
missed-calls for every incoming call, etc ... not good. In the end, I
couldn't even place a call anymore ...

So: don't use this combo. I recommend the stable 2.6.28 kernel with
accompanying rootfs or
uImage-2.6.28-andy-tracking+gitr6+9c4451ff31b937a478f3d3eabef30b71cbe12b12-r3-om-gta02.bin
with fso-nox image from April 4. It seems the best to take the jffs and
the kernel from the same build.

Then run my install script on it.

Maybe the latest version is ok again, but it is IMPOSSIBLE TO TEST
since ssh no longer works. Surely somebody must notice this, or is
nobody even using these images?

About syncing and data from the web:
* with the last version, I think you can open a ics file from the web
* the 4th tool from pimlico is about syncing.. I hope it is just a matter of
time http://www.pimlico-project.org/sync.html
* the projet PISI would like to implement the support of ICS files. If so,
pbm solved ! http://www.opkg.org/package_191.html I am in contact with them
to speak about pimlico
* the data format of the pimlico suite is based on the Evolution project
http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/ There are tools to sync the data
withy the well-known syncml protocol

to adapt / port it on the moko ?
* you can copy / paste the ics files located here :
~/.evolution/calendar/local/system/calendar.ics
Ok, this is a very rough way, but it is ok if you only modify

About PISI - I am one of the developers there and I am happy to read about all
the input for further developments here.
As it looks to me now, there are different options, which probably have
different priorities. I have been pretty much busy with the Contacts part of
PISI; my brother will now start pushing the Calendar part a bit more (after I
will have done some refactoring on this side by the end of this week). First
task there for him will be proper ICS support. There is a Python library
available for doing all the low level files read / write (which I used
sucessfully for VCF files already); so it shouldn't be too much troubles to
come up with a proper implementation.
For the contacts part, I would need some more input for requested data sources.
For now, we support QTopia address book (SQLite, e.g. OM 2008.12), LDAP Server,
VCF files and Google Contacts. Awaiting are:
- opimd support
- SIM card support
- SyncML / Opensync support
- Online VCF support (just download / upload the file)
- Pimlico / Evolution

My impression is, that SyncML / Opensync is my next task. I was searching for
some libraries already; and I found two implementations at a very early stage -
I will go and test them soon.
The Evolution / Pimlico stuff - I thought would be somehow outdated already on
the Openmoko!? The upcoming 2009 will be opimd?? Well, last time I looked for
it, it had not progressed much behind the initial idea.
BTW: Has anybody yet tested PISI on a distribution other than OM 2008.12? I
always tested on this one ...

well, I don't know, but reverting to that kernel+rootf fixed the

But now the whole missed-call comes flying back to me: whenever I

Seems like a timing issue to me ... propably something in

ok, for those curious: I've put online a AT-listing of a missed call:
http://users.telenet.be/liedekef/missedcall.txt

The scenario is this: call the device from another line, answer the
call and watch a notification for a second call arrive (sometimes).
The AT commands in the text file are of course the results of both
calls, so it can be a bit confusing. Although the AT-call ATA should
give you a hint that the device in the end thinks there is only one
active call (otherwise it would be AT+CHLD=2).

I think the cause of the problems lies in the function
void QModemCallProvider::clccIncoming()
in the file src/libraries/qtopiaphonemodem/qmodemcallprovider.cpp

Specifically this part seems to be the culprit:

if ( callType.isEmpty() ) {
// We could not determine the call type, so the incoming call
// has probably disappeared. Flag it as a missed voice call.
d-incomingCallType = Voice; // No tr
announceCall();
d-missedTimer-stop();
missedTimeout();
} else {

This part makes sure that for a call that can't be identified, the call
gets announced and then flagged as being missed, exactly what I see in
the logfile.
Now I don't get this: why flag an dissapeared call of unknown type as
voice and missed call?
From what I can see, this code should be:

if ( callType.isEmpty() ) {
// We could not determine the call type, so the incoming call
// has probably disappeared. Ignore it.
stopRingTimers();
} else {

Any comments on this?
Ok, the fact that the modem sends an extra RING after the call is
accepted is probably because it's a bit slow sometimes (or the RING
arrives a bit too slow).

OpenMooCow 0.4

2009-04-14 Thread Thomas White
Just a quite note to announce the release of version 0.4 of OpenMooCow.

Mo. etc. :)

The changes since 0.3 aren't very exciting, but ensure continued
compatibility with the latest distributions. The changes are:

- A crash, when the sysfs paths were not as expected, has been fixed.
- The very latest changes to the sysfs paths have been handled.
- The change from EV_REL to EV_ABS has been handled.
- Proper categories have been added to the .desktop file.

Download from http://www.bitwiz.org.uk/openmoocow, or from opkg.org.

I've heard of a lot of people having trouble with OpenMooCow on various
distributions. The combination of accelerometers and audio seems to show up
lots of problems which wouldn't otherwise be noticed! For a discussion, look
under Known Problems near the bottom of the page mentioned above. This
release should fix all accelerometer problems, but some SDL audio problems
will remain. I hope to be able to take a closer look at these (they're SDL
problems, not my fault :), but I have other Forbidden Projects taking up my
time at the moment...

Enjoy!

Yes, that was a concern of mine as well, so this too had to be checked
and verified. The complication being that a reworked A6 can only be
distinguished AFAIK by visual inspection and not by checking a bit in
 the hardware.

Perhaps you could turn on MICBIAS and measure for how long the current is
higher than normal as the capacitor charges. See MICBIAS CURRENT DETECT in
the WM8753L manual.

Alas there's no way to read back the results of MICBIAS CURRENT DETECT, so
this won't help.
There's a way to detect buzzfix by rapidly switching on and off MICBIAS and
testing if you hear some buzz when recording from builtin mic. Werner has
created a small program to do the switching job.

Anyway I'm thinking about tackling this issue from a different more radical
vector: implementing a autocalibration scheme for mic sensitivity. This would
involve creating a known sound level (e.g. by playback via speaker) and
checking (and adjusting) the sensitivity of mic according to the audio level
fed back to the mic. Advantage: independent of device hw revision / hw patch
level. No need for creation and maintenance of device specific statefiles or
other config data. Problem: needs check whether it can be done at all.

cheers

I'm actually not sure if this approach works. You can hear the
~40-50 Hz buzz that program (*) generates well enough, but when
I added a buzzfix capacitor, that artificial noise was still
there.

It could be that I did something wrong, though, including not
actually applying the buzz fix.

[SHR] timezone broken again

2009-04-14 Thread ivvmm
This week in SHR was glad to see that editing /etc/timezone and copying
from /usr/share/zoneinfo/smth to /etc/localtime did the trick ---
changed from the London time to what one wanted to.

But today I did an update/upgrade and it broke again. Now we get EEST
timezone.

Does anyone know how to fix it?
