social get-together around Linuxworld

2008-08-01 Thread Michael Shiloh
Hey everyone,

There seem to be a fair number of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, and
in addition to myself who lives in SF, there will be some others from
Openmoko in town.

What do you say to a social gathering?

We used to have a wiki page for events. If someone can send me a link to
it, I'll find out from others when is a good time, and post an event,
perhaps at a local bar.

Alternately, or in addition to, what do you say to a BoF?

Yeah, I was having a problem with that because I couldn't open openocd with

is there another way to boot the neo1973 if the NAND is missing?

service with NorthState in NC

2008-08-01 Thread Michael Shiloh
Christopher,

As I understand it, your cellphone network provider routinely updates
hardware and software in their system. As a result of this, occasionally
older SIM cards may not function.

I am told that this is somewhat routine, and that when this happens
network providers simply provide a new SIM card.

Thus we recommend that you contact your provider (NorthState), and
request a replacement SIM card.

Before you discard your old SIM card please update our database at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/FreeRunner_unable_to_work_with_3G_SIM_cards.
Then, when you get the new SIM card, please indicate whether this new
SIM card solved the problem.

Thanks,
Michael

Optus, Virgin(which uses Optus network), Telstra all work well here. In
fact we developed Qtopia using these networks for years.

That's not a bad idea... I haven't looked into what accelerometers we have in
the FR, but there are plenty of MEMS gyros available; maybe one will have the
same or similar pin configuration. I know the gyros and accelerometers made by
Analog Devices are very close to pin compatible. Last time I checked (about a
year ago), there weren't any 3D MEMS gyros on the market. There was one company
offering what was basically 2 2D gyros glued to each other. I think there's
some kind of manufacturing hurdle that has to be overcome to make them 3D, so
they may not be available in a small size or integrated unit.

Lack of 3G a killer for Australia

2008-08-01 Thread Ben
Unfortunately the FreeRunner will not function well as a phone in
Australia due to the lack of 3G.

The Australian Telcos don't appear to be spending anymore money on pre
3G networks and they may even be pulling some of it out as service is
declining badly. I've had to get a 3G handset and carrier just to get
consistent phone reception in my unit and I know several people who've
had to do the same thing.

The future is highly mobile though, so I look forward to a 3G phone

The next update of Qtopia from qtopia.net I will also make an 'update
tarball' with a script to easily install it.

make packages in 4.3 doesn't work completely, so thats why there is no feed.

4.4 will be a different story.

I experienced that as well. Maybe more like 2 secs on my device.

I had this too one or two times. Could be that it improved with newer
versions but not sure. I'm currently using latest kernel through opkg
upgrade and Qtopia snapshot 20080801 [1].

Could be that you suffer from the `white screen of death' [2]. I
sometimes have it when resuming from long suspend.

Ah, yes. Had heard about that a while ago, and forgot. Thanks.

Strange that this is the first site that bit me, I've been using FF3
since before release day...

I was thinking that there might be some other kind of problem with the
site, as I also couldn't get into the openmoko bug tracker. (But that
is working fine now, there must have been something else going on
yesterday that has already resolved itself.)

You can upgrade Qtopia like this:
shutdown Qtopia (/etc/init.d/qpe stop)
remove /opt/Qtopia
copy new Qtopia to /opt/Qtopia (via scp)

That's pretty straight forward. Tricky part is where to get new Qtopia
as tarball or whatever to copy it. One possibility is to compile
yourself. It's not difficult and you are always up-to-date. The
precompiled images are not so often updated.

Get the Qtopia toolchain for FR [1]. Unpacking it to / will install into
/opt/toolchains/arm920t-eabi/
Get the latest snapshot [2].
Create a build dir and run configure -device ficgta01 then build it.

due to restructuring of wiki which is ongoing (isn't it?) I guess it
would be great if there was a way to get access to up-to-date monthly

/qtopia/ how to upgrade without reflashing?

2008-08-01 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Is there an easy way to upgrade qtopia installation without reflashing
whole rootfs? since /opt/Qtopia is not a part of any package according
to opkg search, thus is not 'opkg upgrade'able. 1 possibility I see is
to keep /home/root on a flash and manually mount it to preserve at least
personal settings and aphone book, but that would require manual
remounting after flashing. May be there is a better way??

/qtopia/ hard to "Answer"

2008-08-01 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Although the rest seems to be working quite fine, and even battery life
is tolerable, with pure qtopia I am experiencing 1 unpleasant effect
(which while writing this email unrolled a bit ;-)

I am running:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# cat /etc/version
200807100425
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.24 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.2) #71 PREEMPT Wed
Jul 16 13:45:35 CDT 2008

not sure where to look for qtopia image specific version, but I believe
I burnt images from the latest tarball
qtopia-4.3.2-gta02-flash-07221045.tgz

NB you might recall my earlier reports about kernel oopses

Whenever I receive a call, screen changes to nice choices to accept or
not the call, but there is 2-4 seconds delay after I press Answer and
anything actually happens. I think that delay was somewhat smaller with
original ringtone (I put some melody in wav file and made it a phone
ring). Also since I am not sure if phone 'sensed' my press, if I press
second time, it would cause phone to accept that press whenever "Drop
the call" button appears on the same place where it was "Answer" and
that immediately drops the call. It might be wise to filter out events
from the queue before reacting on redrawn buttons and even add
500-1000ms delay prior making that "End call" button active.

Few aspects: when I ssh into it via wifi, I see events and avahi-daemon
quite busy (25% and 10% cpu) at that moment. I wonder if that is the
cause for my high-latency reaction to the press of "Answer" (events
niced to -5). I decided to reboot to see if CPU high usage persist

On my first reboot I got white screen and phone was stalled... had to
keep power button pressed for quite long before it shut down

on the next boot it got into QT, showed "No network" and didn't react to
any buttons on the screen (Although they blinked while being pressed,
nothing happened. Unlock item in the bottom left didn't react to
presses). Then it suspended and when I resumed it back -- again
white screen. in a few secs suspended again and then didn't react to any
buttons (ie pow, aux) -- I had to take battery out to power it to shut
it down to power it up again.

prior to 1st reboot battery meter on the screen showed around 50% so I
hoped that would be sufficient, but on 3rd attempt to boot it turned off
somewhere in the beginning -- I had to attach it to usb to make it boot
again.

it booted - and again I got 'no network' message and dead buttons. I
waited a bit again, and this time it got connected to T-Mobile and
everything started to work -- Unlock disappeared, button react now.

Also events/avahi are salient (<1% CPU). So the question would be -- how
to debug what those beasts were doing? strace failed to be ran on
events. But 'slow reaction' effect remained any ways -- I need to click
'answer' very carefully and wait for 3-4 seconds to get actual action.

after suspend/resume (single one) events/avahi remained well-behaving

Removing SMS Messages from OM

2008-08-01 Thread John Whitmore
Sorry can't find answer to problem.

Hello all, Well my OpenMoko has arrived and I'm very happy with it.
Thanks to all the people who've made this happen. I do hope that in the
future I can join the contributors.

Before that I've got two minor problems which somebody might be able to
direct me to the solutions on the wiki. I can't seem to find them.

Firstly my Irish Vodafone SIM card don't work so I'll have to get a new
one tomorrow. In the mean time I plugged in a friend's SIM just to see
if that worked. It did, so that I know it's a SIM issue, but now I've
got a load of my friend's SMS messages in my OM phone :-( Never thought
that would happen. OK what was I thinking, but could somebody tell me
where the OM stores it's SMS's and can I delete them?

Secondly I have a few problems which I think are probably fixed in a
later version of SW. I was trying to do the Getting Started Wiki stuff
and unfortunately the "opkg update" has a load of 404 errors which the
wiki says to ignore. But when I do a opkg upgrade I get nothing. No
upgrade is required. I assume that this should not be the case?

Sorry if I've missed an obvious search and thanks again for all the
effort. This is a truly amazing achievement.

John Whitmore

Re: Edit wiki

2008-08-01 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Hi Community and Martin (thanks to whom we have this tiddlywiki-based
wiki due to his plugins to import mediawiki content)

ok -- for now I just added a section to "Download". Indeed
some time later link within main menu might be "in place".

Prior to making it into .ipkg, I wonder if there is a way to obtain
statistics on what articles on wiki are the most popular, so I could
prepopulate that file with such popular articles. We can't fetch full
wiki.openmoko.org since it would render .html huge.

Also, lets check with Martin (CCing him):

would it be possible to create optional prefetching of images into some
local directory and relinking appropriately in the tiddles (or better
dynamic image source path generation -- if present locally - them from
file, if not -- url)?

This way we could indeed package
openmoko-wiki
openmoko-wiki-imgs (which would be somewhat large)
so that you could install it from the packages.

Also, due to some lack of time I am using pure qtopia image for now,
thus can't check how well this wiki looks under minimo or any other
browser present for FR. Could anyone have a look? may be layout of it
should be adjusted for more pleasant experience on our little screens
;-)

Tovarich, can you package this in a .ipk along with a shortcut in the main

Re: 2007.2 Multitap-pad toggle?

2008-08-01 Thread Dylan Reilly
No, but you can add one by modifying the profile. I tried to remove as
many buttons as possible so the keys could be larger. The intent was
not to have every key present, but rather 100% of the ones used 99% of
the time.

Personally I would only use escape for vi but nano can be installed
instead to compensate.

That's not the openmoko site's fault. The problem is exactly as your
(Firefox 3?) browser says: the certificate isn't trusted. Which means
openmoko didn't pay a 'trusted' third party to get their certificate
signed.
So if you add the certificate to you list of trusted certificates,
all will be fine.

"Secure Connection Failed

lists.openmoko.org uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.

It's easy to automate since surfing non-SSL sites should send your HTTP
headers in plain text, so they you can simply watch the packets and keep
track of data counts, browsers, etc. for each wireless account.

As far as I've seen, personally, it's unlimited. Of course, I tend not
to tether my AT&T phone to my laptop and download ISO-sized files or
anything. I'm sure if you reach a certain amount of traffic, they'll
notice you. Last month I only downloaded about 60MB on my phone.

That's slightly cheaper than AT&T then, who charges me $69/month for
unlimited data plus tethering.

I'm using the neo1973, so I don't think it has nand? But I'm confused
because I definitely used nand in the bootloader prompt. But whenever I
boot, I boot into the NOR flash (based on the pictures). I've never booted
into NAND flash. But I highly doubt it was my battery because it was at full,
and connected to the computer the whole time. Well, I'm a little confused
because the screen shots for the bootloader matched NOR, but then I see
this:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Bootloader#GTA01

and it says the only way for my openmoko to boot is through NAND...

I tried using the debug board but I can't get openocd.cfg to work. It
complains about missing ftd.h. even though i followed EXACTLY all the steps
here: http://svn.openmoko.org/developers/werner/notes/openocd

Any suggestions? :)

I dont mind the language on top for this page, but if we can get rid
of "Main Page" at the top, that'd be GREAT. Right now, it's taking up
a lot of real estate and I don't think we really need the page name
for this page.

The changes look good. I like how the "intro" is split up, so for
people who care most about the license stuff, like developers, when
they scroll down a bit, they can see it.

Cheers!

2008-08-01 Thread Shawn Thompson
The new main page looks MUCH better. I also decided to test using IE6 via
Wine and everything looks pretty good in my opinion.

Er... I just moved it back to the bottom before reading this email... sorry!

I think changing from one language to another inside the page is
actually a rare task, as bookmarks can be set directly to the language
of choice. It also makes the page look less cluttered :)

Re: 2007.2 Multitap-pad toggle?

2008-08-01 Thread Dylan Reilly
Here you go. You still need the other two matchbox keyboard packages.
Use the button in the lower right to switch profiles. There are even
more characters in the "numbers" layout available via shift.

package:
http://atariland.net/~dreilly/openmoko/matchbox-keyboard-0.1-finger.tar.gz
source:
http://atariland.net/~dreilly/openmoko/matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod_0.1-finger_armv4t.ipk
layout only: http://atariland.net/~dreilly/openmoko/keyboard.xml

Changes
-
1) Keyboard repeat removed for finger usability.
2) Defaults to a larger size. The -h argument can be used to adjust
that, but is max 33% in landscape.
3) Key presses are sent on release not press so you can notice errors and abort.
4) Moving off a key deselects it and sends no key.
5) Swipe up, down, left, right to move the cursor in that direction.
6) Width values specified in layout now in absolute pixels.
7) The package overwrites the default keyboard.xml, so back it up if
you like it.

Known Issues
--
1) I know nothing about automake, so I had to hack into the makefile
to set the X session script as executable. If you play with the
source, don't automake without fixing this and expect a make install
to be 100% correct.
2) I think there is something slightly wrong with the meta data in the
ipk. Opkg complains about a related package (matchbox-keyboard-im I
think) after upgrades now.
3) I just noticed the control key seems to be applying at strange
times. If you get a "}" character, hit the CTRL key first. I will look
into this.

I feel like the straightman here, now after that description I got to

Main page change notification

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Main_Page

Hope you like it. Thanks to Ferenc, Bernt, Mercury, Montgoss and Stryderjzw
for helping. Please express yourself by improving it further as you see fit.
It definitely can use more polish:

- The layout has been tested with Firefox and Konqueror only.

- Obviously feeding the news automatically from an RSS flow would be better,
as Aaron said. Pending that there will be a need to feed the newsbox
manually.

- I support Brian's remark that "DOCS" should be "BUGS"

- I add that in the same linkbar, "HOME" and "WIKI" lead to the same page.

In doubt, don't hesitate to use the "Discussion" tab of this page. I apologize
in advance for not following up very closely in the next weeks, but familly
vacations come first.

Wishing everybody a smooth ASU experience soon,

stopped me from doing work that is obsolet after a week.
so i will wait for the release and write something about that then ... :p

but wait... you wrote in an other post, that there will be also a GPRS
update in the configuration-tool short after the release of 2008.8
(known as ASU).
what means short? 2 weeks, 2 month or don't know?

Or is the code already finished and you just won't put it in the stable

..

while i wait, i write some mails to every OM-employee about things they

That is good. Now please find a spot for that in the wiki and link to it. It's

I have the same problems. Tried with SD removed but makes no difference.
Sometimes when I get a fix with external antenna and unplug it then, the
internal is able to hold the fix; but not always. Internal never gets a
fix on its own.

I had the FR open once. I think the internal connector sits fast. I
haven't tried to unplug and replug it because the cable that runs from
the plug to the antenna scared me. At the point where it is soldered to
the antenna it is so thin and looked so fragile and worn off, I was
afraid it would fall off any second.

But I am not experienced enough to say whether this is normal.

buildhost.openmoko.org issues.

2008-08-01 Thread Lech Karol Pawłaszek
Hello.

I wonder if there is something going on with buildhost.openmoko.org. I
am unable to update packages list nor install new packages via opkg for
two days now.

I am unable to wget
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/all/Packages.gz as well. It
says "403 Forbidden". On [EMAIL PROTECTED] someone said that the server
layout is being changed. Is that true? Is there any "temporary workaround"?

Kind regards,

My ancient Garmin GPS-45 manages to get a fix, so I don't think that's the
issue.

We only need to replace 1 of the 2 3D accels with a 3D gyro. I've not looked
at the size or cost of solid state gyros so I don't know how practical that
might be.

Is it in a location that's known to have a usable GPS signal? I found that in
some locations my Garmin sometimes couldn't get a fix either. If you can do
it side by side testing would be useful.

Have you tried without the SD card present? While the kernel you have gives
reasonable performance with the SD present in my experience, testing without
SD would help to narrow things down a bit.

Do you have access to an external antenna?

It would appear so. I got the latest kernel of 2007.2 (and the rootfs with

It is indeed "nothing". Power and comms are obviously OK to the GPS
chip. I would definitely suspect the antenna connection since GPS is
meant to be 100% tested in the factory.

I've got 1 bug, when I activate the keyboard (which is really handy for

In this case, after clicking on a letter (like 'R'), any new point I
click is linked to the last previous point clicked.

I mean :

1) click & drag

3) click on a keyboard letter (like 'R')

4) click & drag; I should have

Buut the line start from last point, none from this click :
