Hi Kamil,

Very nice indeed. An idea might be to provide an option to:
- don't reply (default)
- send SMS
- send email
- send instant message (regardless the other person is on or offline)

Re: [FDOM] best kernel to use for new release

2008-10-25 Thread Pander
Hi all,

I am willing to put in effort in testing, bug fixing, developing and
impoving OM on FreeRunner. This would be a bit easier if it is clear what
exact combination of images is currently the "latest stable" (read usable)
in terms of this community. I understand this is not an easy question ;)

Only if a certain group of people is using the exact same set, it is
possible to succesfully cooperate. I know I am a newbe here but if someone
would get me up to speed, that would be much obliged.

Thanks,

Pander

Like new FreeRunner for sale

2008-10-25 Thread Vinc Duran
I bought my FR in a group sale. I have two never used headsets, laser
stylus, the pouch, and a new extra battery from the Spares Pack. The FR is
essentially new and still has the little screen plastic in place. When I
pack it neatly back in its handsome box it'll be like new. I've never
powered this unit up.

I can take paypal or cash if you're in Boulder, Colorado. Make an offer if
you're interested.

As explained it's possible. Regarding your last point, since the USB
port can provide up to 500mA (as the USB standard stipulates), there's
a good deal of power left: My Thinkpad UltraNav travel keyboard
(i.e. a keyboard just like the one on a Thinkpad laptop, with
integrated trackpoint and touchpad, as well as a 2-port USB-1 hub) uses:

   % egrep 'MxPwr|Product' /proc/bus/usb/devices
   S: Product=USB 1.1 2 port downstream low-power hub
   C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=a0 MxPwr= 40mA
S: Product=IBM USB Travel Keyboard with UltraNav
   C:* #Ifs= 2 Cfg#= 1 Atr=a0 MxPwr= 70mA
   S: Product=Composite TouchPad / TrackPoint
   C:* #Ifs= 2 Cfg#= 1 Atr=a0 MxPwr=100mA

I.e. it uses 210mA, and would leave 290mA left (for reference my
Logitech mouse uses 100mA, and my USB wifi 11g dongle uses 300mA).

Mostly touchscreen with a slide out keyboard sounds good.
Also the touchscreen would be well served by a couple extra buttons.

EFL documentation

2008-10-25 Thread Marcel
Moin!

I've got an idea for a little app on the neo and want to implement the GUI
using the EFLibraries. But I cannot find a thorough tutorial on this
(preferably in python) on the net. There is one about an application launcher
on the E17 wiki but that for example doesn't cover getting some text into the
GUI.

I'm also planning to take a look at zhone. However this also contains lots of
other code and seems to be more like a quick hack (from what I read about it,
although it works).

So my question is: do you know some usable tutorial? If this turns out to be

Would prefer 3, touchscreen plus KB, but only if it doesn't make the
phone bulky. Otherwise touchscreen only is good enough. Should plan
on switching to multi-touch rather than resistive as soon as chips to
do that become available.

It's important to keep the high-res touchscreen. And it would be nice
to also have more buttons, e.g. green and red buttons (hangup/esc and
answer/dial).

Its very Great that you liked FDOM , note that if you need ( or anyone
else on planet! ) need something new on FDOM , have a cool idea , know a
bug ( simply knowledge of 'something is wrong' is valuable enough , not
always a fix is necessary for report ) you can join Fdom Devel list and
post them there! ;)

We will open 'merge window' for one week after each release to accepting
new ideas and fixes :)

FDOM and Ticket #1024 - gsm modem oscillating between registrated / not-registrated

2008-10-25 Thread cosimopiovasco
I can't use my FR because of bug #1024.

Few days ago i flashed qtopia 4.3.2 and patched it with Mwester work
(http://moko.mwester.net/brc.html); it was quite good but I don't like qtopia
...

I started Reading
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1024
and
http://www.teaparty.net/technotes/openmoko-2.html#Calypso.

I used AT%SLEEP=2 with FDOM (Fat_and_Dirty_OM.200809_20081023.rootfs.tar.gz
and Om2008.8-gta02-20080903.uImage.bin) and now it works even better than
qtopia (IMHO). In more than 12 hours and 1 reboot (to reproduce the experiment
- I didn't believe it) no re-registering, receiving call (resume after
suspend) and making call 100%.
I don't know if it's the good work of FDOM guys or anything else, ... but
after today intensive tests I start thinking of FR as a really usable phone !!

For anyone interested in ...

Yup. Hooray if we get it working on Freerunner. Finally something to

Resume in kernel side can complete in a couple of seconds, another
second to get audio up. (What the delay is to get the wake signal from
the GSM module compared to when the call was placed, and the delay in
userspace side after we are up I dunno nor can I do much about it).

I agree it doesn't sound like sticking pictures up (in kernel???) does
anything useful.

The problem with kernel part of resume is just simply stability, it is
very much on my mind and indeed on my desk right now.

I installed cron from Angstrom repository:

I did an alarm clock by using crontab, which launches mplayer wakeup.mp3

It works great!

Hi JW,

You're not posting from an @openmoko address, so does this vote have
an actual benefit?

Do we get to influence the final design of the GTA03?
Or is this just an exercise in filling up our email boxes?

I apologise for asking this if I've failed to realise that you're
famously Openmoko's hardware design manager.

I would personally vote for touchscreen just like the Freerunner, so
that there is less risk of divergence in the input methods of
important software whilst Openmoko-based software stacks are
establishing themselves. Adding options for different input methods
and dealing with the bugs that may introduce by supporting them is not
beneficial at this time - once the stack is solid & stable, then they
can be added.

(Actually, having looked at the other options, I would vote for
touchscreen-only in any case. I might potentially find a trackball, d-
pad or a couple extra programmable buttons useful, but I don't want
space taken up by a keyboard that will be too small to use, anyway.
Just maximise the screenspace!)

In order of preference;

3) combo : if it's a slide out with big keys ie HTC Touch Pro
1) touchscreen : not quite as deep set as GTA02

technically the G1 has a trackball as well, but i got to say, i have a
fondness for slideout keyboards. that is, if the buttons are of the right
size (those found on the sonyericsson SX1 is a bit small for my taste).

Something that could be interesting to ponder, with regards to the
combo layout, is Sony's keypad add-on. It is designed so that one can
run his finger over the keys and use it as a track pad, presumably via
some kind of touch sensitive surface. It's a very cool idea and could
be a useful control mechanism.
This way, the tracker ball thing could be implemented without taking
up exra space.

definitely 3) qwerty + touchscreen

This shouldn't be too hard to do, I don't think it's too much to ask of
OM - surely the keyboard could be a built-in USB keyboard, which would
mean that all the software etc is already there. All we'd need is a way
to disable the on-screen keyboard, something we'll want for
bluetooth/USB keyboards on the GTA02 anyway...

Combo would be great (maybe some kind of these slide-display-sideways
things).
TS only would work too, if a combo is too much.

Just on a side note: please make those text in frames colored rather than
leaving it default... it ruins the look of the page when using black-on-white

3) The touch screen already works, and the addition of a small form factor
qwerty keyboard underneath a smaller screen* would add functionality, make it
more geek-friendly, and also force the developers of the different UIs to
think resolution independence, which is good for the whole reference framework
thing that OpenMoko also does.

In order of preference:
combo
keyboard
touchscreen

Tactile feedback doesn't need so much focus on the things done and is also more
accurate in the most common phone use cases. Not all, though.

I think you should also specify whether it'd be a qwerty keyboard and
multitouch screen.

Since I don't see the kernel output on booting I didn't see if it's missing
modules on first boot, but I copied the modules also because most kernels
need their own special module set (from my experience). Installation: as
simple as
$ dfu-util -a kernel -R -D uImage.bin

Re: External wired small USB keyboard

2008-10-25 Thread Pander
On power drawing from an USB hub in a keyboard, I have the following
question. Is it possible to connect at the same time:
- USB power charger or network over USB with your desktop/laptop (does
this also charge a little bit the Neo?)
- external USB keyboard
- perhaps one other USB device (low power consumption, almost passive)

Is this feesable with some sort of HUB combination?

Auto-reject incoming phone calls

2008-10-25 Thread member kamituel
Hi,
I've coded some little script which allows you to reject incoming phone calls by
putting your phone on the desk with its screen facing the desk.
Additionally, after rejecting the phone call, script sends an SMS with
your apologise
and note that you'll contact the caller later.

So, use case is like this:
1. You're on some meeting/lecture/at work etc., your phone is laying on the desk
somewhere near you with it's screen oriented up.
2. The phone rings, but you don'w want to/have time to answer it
3. Insted of clicking the reject button, you can simply place the
phone so it has it's
screen oriented down.
4. Phone rejects the call and sends sms.

script works on the FSO and is using Call and SMS DBus interfaces.

Understood. I've been testing various images out with my networking
tweaks, and am pleased with SHR. I've been using it as my daily phone for
about a week, as I played with various aspects. (I'm just finishing up a
blog entry on retheming the dialer - I realize the dialer's not finished,
but it was used as an example since I'd just finished doing that exact
thing)

Thanks. I was running FSO testing on top of Raster's image last week, and
had the audio issue there at that time, but in-call audio was fixed before
I flashed away. Apparently it's back.

And thank you again. I'll keep track of that.

I have been on with 4.3 for almost a day now. The moment i try to make a call
it crashes. I am able to receive calls fine. I did have to change the
gsmhandset.state file to prevent the echo.

4.4.1 never really crashed but has bugs like my inability to save a number to
the contacts list from the call logs. Is that part of the contacts
application? The contacts application is much more usable too with the
alphabets on the right. 4.4 also has the inertial scrolling improvement which
makes it really easy to browse contacts but its buggy with the touchscreen
that registers far too many accidental clicks while scrolling.

I am now tending towards 4.4 i really hope there is an update soon that fixes
the obvious bugs. Anything expected soon?

Re: European Freerunner in USA?

2008-10-25 Thread Jeffrey Malone
Okay, as others have reported, the non-North American version of the
FreeRunner will work in the US.

In California and Nevada, there is extensive coverage by both ATT and
T-Mobile on the 1900 band. Both offer prepaid SIM cards.
If you do end up getting a prepaid SIM, there are two things to note:

T-Mobile US does not sell any data plans to their prepaid customers
(so you will not have ANY data with T-Mobile US on a prepaid SIM)
ATT reportedly sells data at a $20/mo cost (unlimited usage).
However, due to a very long reason, T-Mobile coverage would *in
theory* be better, as ATT also relies on 850 towers (T-Mobile US only
has 1900 towers) -- but in major places like San Francisco and Las
Vegas, it is unlikely to be a problem.

Also, you asked about HSPDA modems. A quick look into the modems
shows they are UMTS/HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS. The modems' UMTS/HSPDA will not
work here on any carrier. The 2100 band, which everyone 3g outside of
the US uses, is used for something else.
ATT uses 850/1900 hybrid bands, and T-Mobile US uses 1700/2100 hybrid
(which is not compatible with just 2100).
Assuming the modems support 1900, then GPRS/EDGE will work with them.

Please note that I am not a prepaid customer, so the prices and
availability I've quoted for prepaid data may be incorrect.

Jeffrey

its appear that kernel take huge amount of time to boot filesystem , i
have changed log_level of boot args and noticed few CRC Fail 0x1a3f , boot
stops for at least 30-40 second on each of them , any idea ?

Tested with om2008.9 and daily kernels , same result .

this also caused wireless not to work . eth0 isnt there at all!

First of all, SHR is unstable, hasn't be released, and that is intentional.
We will release when we'll feel what we did is ready for stable and
complete use. Even if I personnaly feel confident enough in SHR to use
it on a day to day basis to do telephony stuff, there are still some
quirks, some caveats, that we want to fix before any official release.

Just so you know, SHR is built using the latest frameworkd (HEAD) in
fact, so if there's any problem within frameworkd on SHR, blame the
FSO team :-).

The Illume-Keyboard is great, but it's simply not the input method I am

Has anyone fixed this bug yet? Is it possible that someone could share a

T-Mobile and AT&T have 1900mhz support most everywhere in the US. Both
versions of the FreeRunner support 1800 and 1900mhz, the only difference
being 850mhz in North America vs 900Mhz elsewhere for the third band.

[SHR] Frameworkd broken in update

2008-10-25 Thread Joel Newkirk
Is there a bugtrac somewhere for SHR that I've missed?

I've been looking at SHR the past several days. (and all things considered
I like what I see - until the issues below it was great for calls, barring
the reregistration issue that is apparently my GSM firmware) Yesterday I
did an "opkg upgrade" and for the first time since I flashed, it upgraded
several packages. When it was finished and rebooted, Dialer and Contacts
no longer worked.

Then this evening, hoping for a 'fix' I fired off "opkg upgrade" again. It
updated the kernel and several modules, with two module installs erroring:

WARNING: Error inserting bluetooth
(/lib/modules/2.6.24/kernel/net/bluetooth/bluetooth.ko): Invalid module
format
WARNING: Error inserting snd
(/lib/modules/2.6.24/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko): Invalid module format

As it turns out, the dialer and contacts ARE working now, but I have no
ringer and no audio in calls. I know this was the state a week or two ago
with FSO, when I was working with it on top of Raster's previous image. Is
it still a problem there as well, or is SHR behind the curve on frameworkd,
or what?
