so, you run the full fso-ms5.1 image using my qte binaries on them, and

And does bluetooth work after unsuspend as well?

hi,

i used an image as suggested in your script:
http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/fso-stable/milestone5.1/om-gta02/fso-console-image-om-gta02.jffs2

and kernel
http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/fso-stable/milestone5.1/om-gta02/uImage-2.6.28-oe1+gitr34240a1c06ae36180dee695aa25bbae869b2aa26-r3-om-gta02.bin

i booted (actually once only), usb-sshed in and tested bt with hcitool.
all ok, so then i ran your script that did the install all
automatically. bt works only before suspend.
restarting /etc/init.d/bluetooth enables bt after suspend/wake

just for the record:

strange enough, my procedure before (when bt didn't work) was: download
image as suggested in your script (om based at that time), kernel off
your site, modules from om again. i had not tested bt before running
your script. after installing qte, no bluetooth.

Hi,

ok, nothing new then :-)
The om-kernel is andy-tracking and has probably some issues. In the
latest version, some fixes have been made that affect bluetooth:
http://git.openmoko.org/?p=kernel.git;a=commit;h=918bf45f92b69c642960b78a7c70a04d5bccb6c3

So I'll try the latest andy-tracking again, but since it's not on
openmoko anymore, I'll try the kernel from shr, that also includes that
commit. See http://build.shr-project.org/shr-unstable/images/om-gta02/

No it is all new code written mainly by Noufal Ibrahim with improvements

Would it make sense to reuse the engine of other project? For what I

you have already acquired.

If you don't go for reuse, do you plan to implement such features?

it wrong, surely a lot of other people will get it wrong too. No, phone
development doesn't mean GTA03. Openmoko can release a device which is
not a successor to the GTA02.

i never said, it has to be a successor to gta02.
the only other phone in the pipeline had the name gta03 and its

gta02 does not see any development, just support and fixes.

I'm sure not everybody agrees with you that bug fixes or improvements
to existing features is not development. Perhaps you could clarify what
 you
think counts as development to an already released product (GTA02).

this is merely hairsplitting (and, no offense, just because you think i am
wrong does not mean you are right), but here goes:
one or more of the following

- newer/better hardware
- improved functionality (f ex wrt standby time, power consumption)
- different device

i am sure, we can spend days on end with attempts to find a definition of
development that everybody agrees to, but what purpose would it serve?
i said it how i see it and so far no information has convinced me that i
am wrong here.

In my case, it seems that the libgps installed on my system is too
 new.

I haven't figured out how to solve this yet, but I'll let you know

 I find out.

I got Navit to work doing the following
 - Drop to a shell prompt on the FreeRunner (or use ssh to connect)
 - cd /usr/lib
 - ln -s libgps.so.17 libgps.so.16

This makes Navit think that libgps.so.16 is installed.

Note: This may work for Navit for now, but may break other programs.

Pardon!? Yes it is hackish and ugly and potentially not stable.
But there is just no way how it could break other apps that are
correctly linked. And wrongly linked apps might work which they did
not before.

If someone has used this solution, could confirm me that TangoGPS
continued to work? I'm trying this in my SHR-testing, but I don't want
 any breakage.

Com on. People who don't understad what this command does should not
use a developer phone or should not tinker with it.

the cam to, say an I2C bus or even an USB hub (USB2)?

But how will you get the image pixels across to the Neo? There has been
some discussion about this on the hardware list, starting with the message
Weird hardware mod ??? back in January. To sum it up:

1) USB. There are many USB webcams available, but the difficulty is finding
one that works well on a USB 1.1 bus, because USB 2.0 is fast enough that
the cameras can simply dump the image across the cable with little or no
buffering in the camera. So most cameras won't have enough buffer space to
hold a good still image, and for the same reason also don't have the
buffer space needed for any of the good video compression codecs.

2) A generic image sensor interface with I2C for control and 8-bit parallel
port for data transfer. Example camera chip:

https://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8668

The options:

2a) The Glamo has an unused camera interface, even with all the important
pins connected to a resistor network, but the documentation is under NDA.

2b) Roll your own somehow. The SC32442B has lots of unused GPIO - e.g.
most of the LCD interface - but the ones that appear to be connected to
somewhere accessible are scattered all over the place in register space.

rant index=1
It would have been a lot easier if the SC32442B camera interface pins hadn't
been frittered away for GPIO assignments that could just as well have been
served by the pins of the unused LCD interface instead. Even if you don't
want to use them for a camera, the 13 of them are nicely lumped together in
GPIO port J. They would have been fine for many projects.
/rant

rant index=2
Of the only two external DMA request pins, one is a dead end and the
other one is connected to the GPS as a simple output. Again lots of other
less valuable GPIO pins are available for such purposes.
/rant

it wrong, surely a lot of other people will get it wrong too. No, phone
development doesn't mean GTA03. Openmoko can release a device which is
not a successor to the GTA02.

i never said, it has to be a successor to gta02.
the only other phone in the pipeline had the name gta03 and its
 development has stopped. period.
There other phones in the pipeline
Three variants of GTA02, 2 entirely new concepts aimed at
different target markets. Not smart phones, but phones nontheless.

I can detail these, each of which is in a different stage of the
product development pipeline, each has various pre conditions that need
to be met before they can proceed to the next stage of development, but
see my comments below about the argument clinic.

gta02 does not see any development, just support and fixes.

  See above.
 - improved functionality (f ex wrt standby time, power consumption)
I believe that OM2009 slated for release in the June time frame has a
good chance of showing improved functionality. One Issue with OM2009
( the paroli work) was that it catered for differences between the GTA02
and GTA03. The design was targeted at GTA03 and utilized certain features
( like a hardware volume button) that were not present on GTA02. With
the demise of GTA03 the design becomes more focused and I would assume
more easy to execute and test.
 - different device
See above

i am sure, we can spend days on end with attempts to find a definition of
development that everybody agrees to, but what purpose would it serve?
i said it how i see it and so far no information has convinced me that i
 am wrong here.

why define terms before an Argument?

So to answer your question. Defining development up front (i am
sure, we can spend days on end with attempts to find a definition of
development that everybody agrees to, but what purpose would it
serve?) Serves a very important purpose. It sets the conditions under
which parties would admit they were wrong or that their beliefs were
falsified. It forms the basis of having a rational debate. everything
else is just naysaying.

I could argue otherwise. They can always learn what the commands do as
they start to need them. Maybe their point in grabbing this phone was so
they could learn linux commands (a natural consequence of tinkering) or
maybe they really like the idea of having source. Everyone has to start
somewhere, and I think it's good that he's willing to learn. Using this
phone is like linux about 10 years ago. Lots of shit doesn't work great
out of the box but improvements happen so fast one always wants to stay
close to bleeding edge everything. Tinkering is how one learns and what
makes this phone fun (for me anyway). In fact, tinkering is what
separates most of us from our fellow proprietary software users. He may
not be a power user yet, but that comes in time. Only other thing I have
to say, don't be afraid to break anything software: a change can almost
always be undone or lead you to fix the problem, and worse case scenario
just re-flash the image. Except maybe those fluid commands for flashing
the modem firmware, be more careful with those.

[debian] problems with debian and u-boot

2009-04-11 Thread Robin Paulson
hi,
i installed debian today, but can't get it to boot. i ran the
'configure-uboot' script from the debian wiki while the phone was
booted to NAND flash (press and hold power, then immediately press and
hold aux), then powered down the phone

there were no errors reported after the script complete, and i've
tried flashing the 'quiet' script and the plain verbose script a
couple of times each

now, when i try to start it, either by pressing the power button
alone, or going through the nand menu, i get an error about 'wrong
format' of a partition. i'm assuming this is to do with the fat/ext
issue for the kernel, but as i followed the instructions to use an ext
partition, i'm not sure what's wrong. it feels like i'm missing
something silly - i got this working last year

any help appreciated

cheers

[QT Moko] MP3 support

2009-04-11 Thread Ali
Hey, is libmad compiled into qt moko? If not, is there another way to
get mp3 support without compiling, perhaps as a deb? A quick browse of
the git repo didn't show any libmad in /src/module_media.pri so i'm
assuming qtmoko can't play mp3s.

Re: Intone (0.20 - alpha release) Elementary based mplayer frontend

2009-04-11 Thread c_c

Hi,
@Yogiz - Thank you for your kind words. I was mostly scratching my own itch ;-)
and it's nice to know that intone finds a place on your FR.

@ all - I'm soon going to release a new version that (to my satisfaction at
least) will provide accurate seek position __and__ prevent the sometimes
occurring lock ups at the end of a song.

I'm also looking for some dbus help. Actually, I think I'll post another thread
on the help I need :-)

There are 2 mysterious bugs remaining :-
 1. an only black screen on running Intone on OM 2008.12
 2. hang on selecting next / prev when playing a song

Are you facing these problems? Do let me know whatever you notice if you face
these. Particularly on OM 2008.12. Thanks.
