Re: gta02 as gps/navigator (in 2016)

2016-01-26 Thread Davide Scaini
Thanks for the replies.
Well it would be nice to use gsm as well... I was thinking about using it
also as anti-theft (gps+accel+sms).

I remember having a lot of problems of data corruption on the sd card with
shr (which was my favourite at the time), that I think might be a serious
show-stopper.

I will start with debian, and if you have any other ideas please tell.

Best,

Any chance to have a distribution that still works on gta02?

qtmoko: still there? (even if I remember it was quite uncomfortable running
gtk applications)
shr: abandoned ?
hackable1: disappeared (I have good memories of that one ;) )

Ok. The summary seems to be that if somebody wants to see the GTA04
schematics they have to use non-free software, at least for the initial
  conversion step.

No, I would not conclude that. One just needs to develop a file import
converter for any free CAD software, if it does not yet exist. OpenOffice
or LibreOffice e.g. has no problem reading Word/Excel/Powerpoint files.

Or use the free(-beer) EAGLE once to do the conversion for the benfit of
all. We can upload any converted files to the same server.

Another question is why we use EAGLE for development. That
has several reasons. One is that we have it, we know it, we know
its bugs and limitations, it works, it is stable, we have a big component
 library.

But the key argument is that it is challenging enough to develop
a GTA04 so that we simply don't want to develop/change tools unless
necessary because lack of functionality. We simply want to use
them and keep away from potential problems that don't improve the
result. The GTA04 would look exactly the same if it were developed by
 using different tools...

Re: question about installing android on FR

2012-01-19 Thread Davide Scaini
 Just read the instructions here
http://code.google.com/p/android-on-freerunner/wiki/GetIt, here pasted:
Partition and format the SD card

For Android to work properly the Micro SD Card in your FreeRunner needs to
have 2 primary partitions. The first needs to be a VFAT/MSDOS (16 or 32)
partition which is used is mounted as '/sdcard', this is used as a storage
area (for pictures, movies, music, etc). The second is an ext3 partition
which Android mounts as '/data', this is where it stores settings, caches,
etc.

Experience has shown that sizing these at a ratio of 3 to 1 works best. So
if you have a 4GB card make a 3GB vfat partition and a 1GB ext3 partion.

Experience has also shown that it is best to delete all existing partitions
and create new when installing a new build. *(This greatly helps the
testing and bug fixing process).* Comprehensive information on partitioning
and formatting your SD card can be found on the Openmoko
Wiki.http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Android_on_Freerunner#Preparing_the_SD_Card

*Note* Users have reported that it is also possible to install Android by
making a single partition formatted as VFAT/MSDOS

Re: Status GTA04 GroupTour

2011-12-29 Thread Davide Scaini
Just my point of view:
I think the price is the problem.

To be less brief I'll explain MY situation: I'm a student, I'm very
interested in GTA04 because I think it's a tool that can help me in
learning how to write code for embedded stuff in an open environment
but I don't have a pay or some regular income. Therefore for me
GTA04 is a dream :D

I read all the previous mails, I have a GTA02 (it was the gift for my
bachelor...), so I know why the price is around 450€ ... but for me is
really too much.
just my small and personal 2 cents

On Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 11:50 AM, Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
h...@goldelico.com wrote:
 Hi all,
that status of the GTA04 mass market group tour

 http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=GTA04%20Group%20Tour

 is that we have:

 * passed half time yesterday
 * first early bird batch is sold out
 * but still only 16% preorders (56 units)
 * we have approx. 6 weeks left to fill the remaining
   gap of 84 %

So I would say that we are still far away from becoming
 successful.

If I read that over 2 Million new Android units have been
activated over the Christmas holidays [1] and 4 Million
iOS devices just on Christmas day [2], I can't believe
that we do not find 350 potential buyers in 60 days...

Well, we don't have a real mass market device and I think
we should not even pretend to have one, in this phase.
Because we are then compared to the 100 EUR Huawei
Android/UMTS units where one has to suspect that the
workers in China are being ripped off...

What do you think should we do to make this group
 tour a success?

 * extend the subscription timeframe until we reach
  100%?
 * ask for/collect donations to extend the early bird rebates?
Some sort of sponsorship by community members for
community members who can't afford a new GTA04
   immediately?
 * have more resellers or buying groups to order batches
   of 10 units?
 * talk more about the benefits and special features one
can only find in a GTA04 and nowhere else?
 * subsidize GTA04 boards by combining them with a
   UMTS contract?
 * offer to pay only part of the price by end of the subscription
time frame so that we can already buy the expensive
and difficult to source components, but postpone
production individually until the remaining payments
arrive? (i.e. pay 200 EUR until 10th Feb and the remainder
   until May)

More ideas are welcome! But please keep in mind
that we can't develop something completely new until
February and components cost what they cost...

The simpler the idea the better!

And, there may be ideas which are too big for a single
community member, but may become feasible if we all
work together, contributing many small pieces.

 Curious about your ideas,
 Nikolaus

Previously it loaded all data to memory, so no large maps could be created.
The connection to MySQL is done on local host, user and password is osm,
database is osm, so create corresponding schema and user account in MySQL.
In future releases it could be possible to change it via command line
parameters.
So what should I type in my terminal :D I'm not so familiar with mysql ...

change in converter, but more functionality was added. For example there is
possibility to save bookmarks, save and load route (can be opened as
standard GPX), save and load track logs, has faster routing, can show
 simple
itinerary etc. For more information go to [1].

This is still beta, not all is done and some functionality may not work as
expected. Currently I'm using it actively in car and on bike and it works
quite good fro me. Currently only map of Czech republic can be downloaded,
next version will add turn restrictions and (hope) stabilize map format for
all 0.3.x versions. After that, more countries will be available for
 download (or on demand).

I have released previous public version more than one year ago, but I
 wanted
to release something usable, therefore the huge delay.

Currently only Debian version can be installed out of the box, needs
 fso-gps
and edje, but works with new libgps also. But you have to compile it
 yourself.

More details please. The rtc is meant to be powered by the main battery
 during
suspend, so the backup battery shouldn't have any effect, hence the belief
that it's a software bug. ffalarms (via fso) is supposed to set the rtc to
generate an interrupt to wake the phone at the specified time if necessary.
 It
is possible the rtc isn't being set, or that ffalarms isn't being called on
 wake among other things.

Does the phone wake but not sound the alarm?
If you wake the phone and immediately run 'date' in the terminal do you see
the correct time, or the time when the phone suspended?

the phone does not wake neither during suspend nor when shutdown (if i set
an alarm).
date is working correctly, but the illume gadget is not. I thought this was
related to the malfunctioning of ffalarms (but Lucasz says it's only a gui
problem).

I am sure that android installs some system files on the sd, so you need a

choice for android is to have 2 partitions: one for android system files and
another for your datas.

I'm interested in taking a look at Android...

 1. The installation instructions seem to involve both a full SD card

don't understand is whether the SD card is only needed during
installation, or if the same SD card needs to stay in the phone
afterwards, when booting Android from NAND.

it's needed also after.

 2. I understand that the Android installation flashes a modified
version of the Qi bootloader. Can this modified version still boot
 other distributions, in particular Debian?

yes, i tried it some time ago... but you have to switch sd (and that it's
what i'm trying to avoid :) )

Basically the situation is that I want to keep Debian (on SD) as my
main distribution, but have Android in NAND for trying out. I have
another SD card (512Mb) that I can use just for the Android install,
but after that I'd like to put the Debian SD card back in.

Thanks for any answers and advice!

The number of applications on the SHR Illume desktop was getting to be a

 Screenshot: http://artifacts.glitch.tl/DESKCAT-0.2-screenshot.png
 Package: http://opkg.glitch.tl/deskcat_0.3_arm.ipk
 Source:
 http://glitch.tl/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/home/host/glitch.tl/repos/deskcat/

Important: read the whole blog post before installing the package. This is
 somewhat experimental.

Basically you define categories in the application and assign a category to
any application. The application creates desktop launchers which will rename
any managed .desktop files in /usr/share/applications to a different
extention if they are not in the desired category.

One problem with this application is that it does create quite a few
.desktop files of its own and they do clutter the place up. The category
icons could be put into categories of their own but that would make
 navigating slower.

Please reply with any comments, complaints and feature requests. One
thought I had after getting the application to work on the phone is that I
could reduce the number of icons by using the GUI application to switch
categories. Doing it that way would be slower and require more finger
presses, but it would be tidier.

Any hints on what could've gone wrong and why it persists after reboot?

Re: Now someone REALLY has to help me!!

2010-01-27 Thread Davide Scaini
To make it easy ina straight forward:
I suggest to you to install SHR on sd card.
To do this you need:
- a microSD card
- at least one partition on that card (ext2 ext3). If you buy a musd card
just for shr it would be easier just to not messup your current musd that
has some android files on (for sure).
- download the tar.gz version of testing of shr (if you prefere that one...)
- mount on your pc the musd is easier thatn everything and extract on the
musd the tar.gz
- put the musd in your fr, then press aux button plus power button to enter
uboot menu, there with aux button you can select start from micro sd card
and press power to boot...
that's probably all you need (afair)

because I think it looks good and is a funny concept, and I hope to learn
 more about it with time.

 BUT

The installation guides I've been following seems to be made for people
 with
more knowledge than me, and there are dozens of terms in the
 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_Started_with_your_Neo_FreeRunner
guides and http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SHR_User_Manual manuals that I
don't understand. So I thought I should take it from the beginning so you
can correct me where I'm doing wrong.

 * HOW TO INSTALL SHR ON A FRERUNNER WITH ANDROID *

 1) For being able to install SHR on a Neo with Android you need:

Hardware; phone, usb-cable, a computer with Ubuntu
Software; Dfu-util, NEO-tools, U-boot (installed on my Neo atm.), a
 kernel-module and SHR-root filesystem

The software can be found at the following places:

 http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=dfu-util DFU-util : Wtf is
intrepid, jaunty karmic, lucid? Am I supposed to understand that? I thought
 it was a program.
 http://users.on.net/~antisol/neotool NeoTool : Also not a program,
 just.
 text?
http://www.denx.de/wiki/U-Boot U-boot : I already have it installed on my
neo, so I dont need it again?

 http://build.shr-project.org/shr-testing/images/om-gta02/full-om-gta02.jffs2
SHR-root filesystem : Im taking the files from the Testing line instead
 of
 Unstable, it's ok, right?

 http://build.shr-project.org/shr-testing/images/om-gta02/uImage-om-gta02-latest.bin
Kernel module : Only one file?

AND, you need to Flash the Neo before anything can be done.

This is done by first installing the DFU-utility software on a Linux
computer, connect the Neo and doing the AUX-startup and also typing in the
 NEO-tools http://users.on.net/~antisol/neotool text somewhere?

 %-|

Ok I think I'll stop here. I really want to succeed with this, because I
love the Openmoko, but if I cant get a simple installation right I'll throw
this phone into the garbage. In other words, I appreciate all help.

 Thanks!

 Martin

This bug has been there for about a week, and SHR team says that in a
day or two they will bump EFL to revision 45060, which fixes that bug.
In the meantime, because the fix is very small (just 2 function calls,
a little change), I recompiled the revision of the Edje library used
by shr, patched with that fix, and tested on shr-unstable.

You can find the patch to the source code attached, and here is the
 stripped library:

Just place it in /usr/lib while X is down :-)

 Hi,

Just FYI to the community list, as slowness has been one of the
biggest problems with Neo. Quite nice speedups are coming:

 http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/openmoko-kernel/2010-January/010811.html
 (performance testing by Gennady Kupava)

Apparently, and unfortunately, no-one had really questioned Om Inc:s
(who mainly did the kernel work back in the days of the still mostly
used 2.6.29) choices of kernel configuration. Disabling kernel debug
features and pre-empt has resulted eg. these kind of improvements
 (from IRC, #openmoko-fi):
 - boot time 68.5% of original
 - apt-cache search nano 20s - 14.8s
 - emacs -f kill-emacs 3.8s - 2.2s

These configuration changes are not yet in andy-tracking (the 2.6.29
kernel still being used in most distros), I don't know what's the
situation in the new om-2.6.32 branch. Together with the quite recent
commit from Thomas White that doubled theoretical glamo speeds (in
practice at least 20% in general), I feel that Neo FreeRunner is not
anymore terribly slow, but only slow by today's standards, which
is quite an improvement. Especially after having been used to the
 terribly slow general behavior ;)

Please tell if some distro happened to have those disabled already,
and if someone knew about these speedups via the options already - and
please arrange a commit to git.openmoko.org next time! Anyway, this
all goes to show that in a project with limited resources like
Openmoko, especially now that it's completely in the hands of the
community when it comes to Neo FreeRunner development, you have to
have the courage to question anything suspicious etc. you are
seeing, not trusting that someone has actually optimized something to
 the extent assumed.

If you want to have a quick grab of the new kernel for Debian (or any
distro that loads uImage from a file), I put my compilation of kernel
 and modules to
 http://users.tkk.fi/~tajyrink/moko/kernel_20100108_nodebug_nopreempt/

-Timo, wishing everyone a speedier new year

I own a rev. A5 freerunner and was seriously affected by the buzz problem.
After applying the hardware fix the audio quality improved a lot. Before

However, the audio quality was never as good as on a friends rev A7 FR

 Yes

 SHR-U (and shr-t on nand).

A dumb phone just to call. I hate smartphones and fr can't place a call

Yes. I upgraded to moko11 firmware earlier this year, and later also

I doubt it has gone backwards.
