It's relative to the device. If a device have capabilities to run
froyo, so yes it will be faster. But froyo won't run on the most

France : Taxes for video and mp3 playing capacity

2008-01-24 Thread Steven Le Roux
Hi all,

According to this
(http://www.pcinpact.com/actu/news/41415-iphone-ipod-taxe-commission-dalbis-copie-pri.htm
 french speaking)

France is about to taxe smartphone which provide 3 features :

- At least 128mo internal memory (neo will have 256)
- at least one touch/key dedicated to audio playing (what about a touchscreen ?)
- mp3 or video playing

Obviously, this taxe is made to be iphone compliant, so I think the neo is
too...

If this case is occuring everywhere else (other country), I think it could be a
good idea to distribute OpenMoko without any mp3 player but with a prompt at
first wifi connexion for example which ask if you want install the related ipkg
packages...or in an intallation wizard menu

(no I don't want to be taxed again for that ! ;) )

Well, offcialy it's not a taxes for illegal ustilisation but for an exception
for private copy.
The joke is the major want to blow up this private copy, but still want to get
money from the taxe.

this, more the fact that I can't stand any american/french/whatever Idol and I
don't want to pay for that.

Maybe OpenMoko could be the only platform which could not bring out-of-box an
audio/video player.

It's not about money, I prefer to give the taxe amount directly to openmoko as
a donation (paypal button is missing ;) )...

Yes I understand what you mean. But, to them, mp3 means audio... and I presume
all audio playing habilities. It's not about a codec. We could think about
reading only mid files and block all other files... just during the shipping
and the user enable it easyly but the easier way is to provide any player on
repository but not out of box.

Before to know how to do it... Does it make sense for some other than me ? for
the Openmoko team ? the marketing team ?

I repeat, this taxe doesn't exit as counterbalancing the illegal use of audio
files. It's more like a compensation for private copy. (This is still
incoherent because they are taxing a potential use, but not a real usage... I
mean I could never hear their music... watch their movies etc...)

It has already been discussed with Mickael on this list.

The new part of this, is the communication around. According to Michael, gta02
case is not yet published, therefore I guess there is some differences, but the
question is : what is the usefulness with this publication if there is
difference between gta01 case and gta02 case ? I mean, the wanted case for
someone who want to make alternatives cases would be the gta02 one.

Anyway, this publication, which in and of itslef is a great news for consumers,
is a good way for openmoko.com, showing again to the whole market an
alternative way of business.

No matter the delay, I will waiting for... I'm waiting for 2years after this
phone... It's not few month more which makes me get bored... and I have to say
I have no phone for now... (it's my friends who are complaining, not me :))

Simple reflexion... do you want a phone now, with not finished drivers, which
could not bring you garantie that hardware is ok ? I think If you want to pay
an extra (for out selling circuit), you should be able to get a gta02, but
don't come in one month if the v6 or v7 are solving a hardware pb which is
annoying you...

So here is about the Openmoko release to be delayed, but even if it's the Neo
phone from FIC, I don't care, I will be waiting ;) (and I still will have to
wait for the 4th operator in France, because 3 first are fiddling with price,
they pay a fined but the kept the same prices...)

Thank you Steve for precisions.

One more question about the 10 pack... As you can see, we are organizing to
get 10pack in order to drive down the shipping cost... but is this pack will
contain the same accessories than a 1 neo pack ? (charger, stylus, other
goodies...). I mean if there is only 30$ difference between both, (plus
shipping cost) but less all goodies, I am not sure it's more interesting to
get it inner 10 neo's pack...

thx

As said in another mail, maybe the solution to mark as "research item"

2008-04-16 Thread Steven Le Roux
Hmm in this goal, why not Openmoko.com to sell "blank" case, non finished
ones, witout any painting, just to be customized/adapted later ?

I don't think only with painting, but integrate an eye cam or other
expansion pack, or wifi external connectors for example...

Even one water proof why not :)

Re: wiki help

2008-04-16 Thread Steven Le Roux
hmm okay it's not as easy as we wanted to do :)

here is an explanation :

| width="25%" rowspan="4" | Sample country
| width="25%" rowspan="3"| sample region #1
| width="25%" rowspan="2"| sample city
| width="25%" | sample buyer #1 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Jabber_Id
|-
| width="25%" | sample buyer #2 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Jabber_Id
|-
| width="25%" | sample city #2
| width="25%" | sample buyer #3 mail Jabber_Id
|-
| width="25%" | sample region #2
| width="25%" | sample city #3
| width="25%" | sample buyer #4 mail Jabber_Id

In a way, if your country already exist, so just do +1 to the "rowspan"
value in front of your country, and the same for your city if exists.

If your country doens't exist on the page, so add this :

|-
| width="25%" rowspan="1" | YourCountry
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| YourRegion
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| YourCity
| width="25%" | Shawn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jabber_Id if
you have one)
|-

where your country is alphabeticaly located. Or at the bottom and we will
correct it...

Note, it doesn't have to be two following " |- "

If you want to add a region, so +1 to the country rowspan, and after the :

|-
| width="25%" rowspan="2" | YourCountry
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| NOTYourRegion
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| NOTYourCity
| width="25%" | NOTShawn
|-
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| YourRegion
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| YourCity
| width="25%" | Shawn
|-

And it's almost the same with a same region but not the same city :

|-
| width="25%" rowspan="2" | YourCountry
| width="25%" rowspan="2"| YourRegion
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| NOTYourCity
| width="25%" | NOTShawn
|-
| width="25%" rowspan="1"| YourCity
| width="25%" | Shawn
|-

it has to be as much rowspan value than there is interested members by
location.

okay ?

I've corrected it. it should have been :

the contrast make sense to put visible some items, but colors depends a lot

I totally agree with you.

I understand everybody is happy to see the neo coming, but don't forget the
goal :) : to provides the best free phones.

It wouldn't be pleasant for us to by a phone, knowing there is a known issue
with optimisation of power consumption and LED stuff..

I understand the rush ;) but we can wait...

EFL are optimized libs slower hardware, more powerful than gtk, wich is just
a gui toolkit. EFL are so much more...

To clone a SIM via Freerunner ?

I plan to clone a future SIM to have a "sports phone" to preserve my

Is there a way to clone the SIM with the phone ? Or do I need a reader ?
anyone has a good plan for "naked SIM" ?

huum ? I use it daily on desktop/laptop and at work for over 4 years.
I have friends who use it like me...
There are external project which use it too... for example : geekbox

focusing on E doesn't mean you can't run any GTK or QT app.
It's really like a pc, if you run gnome, can't you run marble or K3B ?
If you run KDE4, can't you run firefox or OpenOffice ?

The choice for a standard graphical librairy make sense for the OS,
but the OS shouldn't forbid you to use any application you want.

Obviously, the intergration is better when application are mainly
coded with native libs, but, if we are making a choice between GTK or
QT... the debate is the same.. my QT apps won't be integrated as well
as GTK's ones on a GTK environment and vice versa.

I experienced the same ;)

I am a e17 user on my desktop so I know you can change your engine with :
enlightenment_remote -engine-set
where can be SOFTWARE or XRENDER. (maybe SAFTWARE16 too on FR... you
can know it with -engine-list )

my pb is I don't have networking with om2009 yet :) s I can't set it up :)

Hi all ,

Just flash to help testing :)

I really love paroli ! Better each release appearing :)

I found the same issue than Michal, not a real problem, but it's hard to
scroll without clicking.

not a big deal anyway...

BTW, with testing release 4 you could return into illume by changing the
profile, but now I change profile to illume without any effect... is it
still possible ?

How to access to apps ?

congrats for the great work :)

for the "people" view, it's ok, scrolling nicely without clicking, but in
the "settings" menu, I put my finger on item A, then scroll up/down, when I
release it, the item A is automatically clicked.

Accually it was a "first shot" problem, after reboot, no pb selecting
paroli-serenity (which look great to me !) Maybe a button to put paroli in
fullscreen mode would be more useful than changing the profile ?

No matter if you move between, or if you never plug it on...

I agree to Raster... Even if there is few open hotspot, it's barely
usable because it isn't noticed anywhere.

here is a view in my city after a small wardrive :
http://le-roux.info/temp/wardrive_brest.png
results here : http://brest-wireless.net/wiki/wd

more than 10 000 wifi access points. less than 1% opened, less than
0,4% opened by acknwoledgement

You can use it only if there is a real wifi network band (like
brest-sans-fil-x access in Brest city, only 40 APs for now)

Look the freephonie map... freephonie is a free service provided by
the the ISP free.fr in France. Every where you have a freephonie
access point (the set top box freebox), you can phone freely and taxes
free. It's usable, because you have freebox everywhere...nearly 30% of
the whole probes we see... and compared to that... we have 2 fon
access... versus...
http://maps.fon.com?lt=48.39649929054651&ln=-4.488687515258789&zm=14

numbers speak themselves...

Each .tar corresponding to the zoom .

Hmm Google is not the best example here because if your ISP ipv6
connectivity hasn't been validated by google, you won't be able to
resolv the name from ipv6 (only ipv4)

All is described here : http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/

(but it's not the pb here ;) because you can resolv with icmp request...)

more visibility => more contribs => more testing => more stable =>
best FOSS GSM middleware :)

Since I love OS like om2009/Paroli, and even SHR (all EFL based
development actually) , I would love to see FSO to be rock solid to
help people to concentrate on Apps and tweaks :)

normal, I also just tried, illume2 is kind of a fork from illume, with code
cleaning and refactorization before going further.

I see a little difference on my desktop btw, the illume2 module is less

You're wrong comparing both solutions here.

They are not intented to do the same job. TangoGPS is not a routing app and,
in a lot of case, this is enough seeing where you are going to drive,
without the need of routing.

These soft are not in the same cathegory to me.

paroli because I think it more than a theme which is needed to approach your
mockups

I Don't think there are so much... I fully agree with him to say Neo/OpenMoko
goal is to become a *FREE* user friendly phone. Even if Qtopia could give
bigger range, or bigger "celebrity", it will not change the
OpenMoko/OpenEmbedded mission, to provide a free framework/os

Ok, I am not a developper, but, I think the accelorometer has the goal to
provide a good video rendering.
If you see forward, the hardware will be improved, and I think there will be
some "eyeglasses" effect or any "eye candy" things that won't not be possible
with frame buffer...

oops, language bug :)

As you said, I was talking about the SMedia 2D/3D accelerator :)

Great news !!!

I am e17 user for some years ago after DR16 user so I know you was specialized
in embedded systems :)

OpenMoko is a kind of a logical way for you :)

great welcome and see you soon :)

Example of accelerometers utility

2007-12-02 Thread Steven Le Roux
Here is a video which shows some applications for accelerometers in a current
phone use:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWc-j4Xs5_w

There is for example :

- battery level
- different tone for received msg (accelerometers make sense cause if you are
in reunion/course/whatever, the phone shouldn't be moving, unlike if you are
walking/moving, most of time any noise should be acceptable)

ideas :

There is already some different way to login, (gps coord) login/pwd..., why not
a code based on accelerometers :)
I mean for example, two at left, one at right, one bottom, one behind...

It could be a 3D code...

You can still split the screen and use a small surface which reduces power
consumption.

And the whole "freephonie" network in France which is a wifi network for SIP
phoning over PEAP autentication.

This is a huge wifi nework which provide free national phoning through wifi
from freebox set top boxes.

Juste to give you an idea, here is an example of the network on one part of the
Brest City (France).

It's between 10 and 20% of all the SSID :)

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1812/freephonie3cp5.png

(picture obtained with kismet, gps, and pushing all coords in kml, oh and many
many car driving time :))

It represents like 1,5 millions Access point over the country, and both phone
provided by Free (the ISP) are quite bad, a wistron and a pirelli which are not
opened, and anyway pieces of shit), so many people are interested by the PEAP
feature ;)
