Latest SHR-?

2010-01-28 Thread Tony McKeehan
I heard somewhere that there are some SHR-stable images on the way. Have
they been released? If not, what image (lite) would you suggest I pick
up for the time being that works best as an everyday phone (ie the most
recent image)? Also, is there any specific kernel that has the logging
disabled (like from the 'Significant speedups' thread) that work best
with SHR?

Re: Quick e-mail poll: Still using your Freerunner?

2009-12-30 Thread Tony McKeehan
Not my primary phone, but I use it form time to time to surf the
web/play games with Hackable:1 or QtMoko (only distros that connect to
web). Not huge fan of SHR, because the interface does not lend itself
well to a phone (can't even create+type+send an SMS in less than a
minute, much less 15-20 seconds like every other phone ever).

My daily phone is the same phone I've had for years, a Motorolla L2 bar
phone.

Re: [QtMoko] GPS navigation apps for QtMoko

2009-12-16 Thread Tony McKeehan
Yeah, NeronGPS is in the QtMoko feeds and all you need to install it is
a recent version of QtMoko and an internet connection. It's native to
the Qt framework that QtMoko uses and doesn't need an X server. It has a
slightly different interface from Navit and tango, but it's pretty easy
to get used to.

-Tonym

Brolin Empey wrote:
 Hello list,

Are there any GPS navigation apps for QtMoko, i.e., any usable without
an X server? I cannot use QX because every time I try, I end up having
to remove the battery from my FreeRunner because my FreeRunner locks
up and is unusable. I wanted to use Navit, but it requires a working X
 server.

Alternately, is there any way to get a working (non-QX) X server on
QtMoko, or use QtMoko with an X server (maybe on plain Debian)?

Months ago, I asked for recommendations of MicroSDHC cards to buy to
install plain Debian on. I still have not even found a place to buy
any of the recommended cards because I have not made doing so a
sufficiently high priority for it to ever be done.

My parents gave me a Garmin nûvi GPS navigator (I do not remember
which model, but I can find out if you want) as an early Christmas
gift, so I at least have a working GPS navigation solution, but it
would be better if I could use my FreeRunner as a GPS navigator. I
never use cell phones while driving because doing so is a recipe for
disaster for me: I always pull over and stop before using a cell
phone. I am mentioning this because I wonder if it simplifies finding
a GPS navigation app because I do not use cell phones while driving,
so I do not have to answer nor make calls while the GPS navigation app
is running. I still need to log missed calls and receive SMS messages,
though. I also do not want messages about missed calls or received SMS
messages blocking my view of the GPS navigation app on the screen
while I am driving because I may not even be able to safely pull over
 to use my FreeRunner.

I am using QtMoko v14, but will see if v15 looks like it is worth
 upgrading to.

 Thanks,
 Brolin

[H:1] New Keyboard! t9brain

2009-12-10 Thread Tony McKeehan
Screenshots from rev4 [1] [2]

I've made a new keyboard, built specifically for the Hackable:1 distro.
I can supply the source if someone wants to build a package for SHR or
QTMoko. Before that, though, it needs a severe face-lift, if anybody is
willing to help me on that front. My specialty is basically everything
but making it look pretty. A simple E-based design would be nice...

To use it, you must execute the binary within the same directory as the
words dictionary directory [3]. The source is here [4], but keep in
mind that the current algorithm doesn't use nearly all of the files in
the tarball. Most of the algorithm is in t9_list.cpp and numpad.cpp.

If you have H:1 I encourage you to try it out and give me feedback.

resolutions is a smooth, fast, and automatic (where desired).

Here's an idea I'm not sure I've heard before and I think it should be
pointed out. When there was discussion whether to use VGA or move over
to QVGA I was for the higher resolution, because viewing maps,
terminal, pdfs and browsing at higher resolution was more important for
me then speed. If however we could have everything at QVGA by default
and change smoothly to VGA when required we could have all of the good
 and none of the bad.

 Sounds very good to me.

Re: SHR status

2009-10-18 Thread Tony McKeehan
I have personally had many troubles with SHR in the past. For one, I
don't think the Contacts application has ever worked for my SIM card. It
immediately crashes. It might be because it hasn't finished loading all
of the contacts from SIM, but crashing is a poor way of handling this
issue. Also, the lack of a true 'phone' UI seems to be missing the point
(although Launcher does some to fix this). Another thing is that I don't
enjoy the laggy graphics. Even by setting it to sw_16, it just looks
tacky. Not a good decision to have to make.

That being said, I find the custom Settings apps to be fantastic. The
only thing that has never worked is the wifi connect stuff, and I think
that it's a problem that everyone has. The illume themes are also very
good on the eyes. I'm very impressed with the progress made so far.

Overall, not for me. I tend to stick with QtMoko/H:1 for reliable phone
service and stability. QtMoko's v14 is almost out of the 'getting it to
work on the freerunner' stage and onto the 'lets make it a better OS
overall' stage which shows the immense progress. H:1 is making huge
advancements with their new rev5RC1. The only real issue with it is the
lack of ringtone profiles and the wifi app is rather primitive (but you
can load others, obviously). I think if you want to have a true
'reliable phone' you should head to one of the ones I just talked about.
If you want to be a part of cutting edge phone development, with all of
the quirks and caveats, then SHR is what you want.

Now all we need is for Android-on-Freerunner to fix the glamo issue so
it's not laggy and increase the sound quality of calls, and the
Freerunner will be making its way to stardom.

[QTMoko] V8 doesn't receive SMS

2009-09-03 Thread Tony McKeehan
I just installed V8 of the QT Moko and overall I am very happy with it.
I've noticed that it is much faster than previous versions with QX
installed.

I do have a problem where SMS messages went unreceived. I should have
received 3 SMS messages, but QT Moko failed to notice them (and it was
connected to my phone network because I was able to make calls). Also,
the volume is very low for phone calls even after updating the
gsmhandset.state file to use values of 120.

Does anyone else have either of these problems?
