I think I'd phrase it a bit differently: the advantage to me of OpenMoko
is that we *get* to choose, rather than the manufacturer choosing for us!

To drag the conversation back to text input briefly (downside of having
been away is that I have to revive long-dead threads!), there's one
suggestion I'd like to make to improve the dictionary function (as used
for T9 and some of the alternatives).

Would it be useful to add 'temporary words' to the T9 dictionary, which
would include, among other possibilities, (a) all names in the address
book, and (b) all words in the text/email to which I am replying.

Use case: Say I've received a text from a friend along the lines of You
coming to Borat tonight? And I want to reply with Been meaning to see
Borat: have you asked Bertie and Aesop? Borat, Bertie and Aesop are all
words which aren't in my phone's dictionary, so I have to type them in
manually - but Borat is in the text I'm replying to, and the other two
are in my address book. Adding them to a 'temporary' extra dictionary
would make my life a lot easier.

This might already have been done in some phones - it seems obvious
enough to me that I'm surprised it hasn't been done in mine.

Cheers,

Ben

Did you thought about languages other then English?
What about national chars?
Switching languages during write?

My native language is Polish, I write notes, contacts, events, todos on my
current phone (SE k750i) and it handle national chars without problems.
When I want to enter English words I can switch to it so T9 dictionary
will get English instead of Polish etc..

Text entry

2006-11-30 Thread Christopher Heiny
On Thursday 30 November 2006 00:17, Alexander Steinert scribbled in crayon
on the back of a kid's menu:
What do you think about T9? Touching instead pressing keys could
speed up the process noticable. And the user has the option to fit the
geometry of keys to his fingers.

Another option is JetKeys
   http://www.jet-way-tech.com/home.html
(sorry about the annoying infinitely repeating Flash demo) although I don't
know if it is subject to IP issues or not.

There is IBM's ShapeWriter (aka Shark) that I mentioned previously. I don't
recall if that there's any IP on that one, either.
http://www.almaden.ibm.com/u/zhai/shapewriter.htm

Jumpx (aka Fitaly) already has an open source implementation at
   http://jumpx.sourceforge.net/
Though it is stylus oriented in the current implementation.

Apparently the Xerox patent on single stroke character recognition (the one
that pushed Graffiti out of PalmOS) was ruled invalid a couple of years ago
(just discovered that today - doh!), making something like Graffiti an
option.

2006-11-30 Thread David Ormsbee

Hi folks,

So when I first heard about this phone, I mocked up this idea:

http://dave.hereticmonkey.com/musings/phone_keyboard.html

I had originally wanted to make something that would be compatible
with phones that have physical buttons (hence the 3x4 grid), but I'm
beginning to think that I should just give up on that and put a giant
spacebar button on the side. Also, I never thought about making
capital letters by the way you slid your fingers off of a key before
reading this thread. It sounds like an awesome idea.

I haven't tried mocking this up on any physical device yet, though I
will probably do so when I get back home in a few weeks.

Just my two cent idea. Criticisms/improvements are certainly welcome.

Take care.

Dave
