I presume it's what we call a USB Type A Female to Female Gender Changer, like this one: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Specialized_USB_cables#Ready-made_type_A_jack_to_a_type_A_jack_adapter_.28gender_changer.29 Yes, that should allow you to connect a random USB device that is typically attached to a computer, to the end of the USB cable that came with your FreeRunner. With this adapter your USB pendrive would be powered by the FreeRunner, which is what you want. Yes, they exist, but generally they only power the _device_ USB ports, i.e. only downstream devices. A hub like this must not pump power into the upstream host, because the host is normally providing power itself. With power management host mode disabled the FR can accept charge, but the 15k pulldowns in the FR that would normally be connected to D+ and D- in host mode are also disconnected. You should be able to do this with the Freerunner, but you have to set the
mode in sysfs correctly, AND you should have 15k resistors between the D+
and D- data lines and ground. (see
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GTA02_sysfs#USB_Host_.2F_Device) I'd ordered
a combo USB hub plus card reader that I wanted to try to utilize this way,
but when it arrived the hub was intermittent and the card reader was dead,
so I've not been able to try yet. (awaiting RMA) I've got a 5V 2A cord
from my lost Zaurus that I was going to power it all with, figured that'd
be adequate to charge the freerunner at 1000mA while powering the hub/card
reader and whatever I've plugged into it. Just needs a bit of rewiring
inside the hub.
As far as connecting a desktop PC and the Freerunner to the hub at the same
time, I'm not sure WHAT would happen if the Freerunner were in Host mode -
you'd get contention as to which was master of the bus, probably neither
would be able to work in that configuration. (I'm not even sure if the
design of a USB hub would allow it - I think it treats the 'peripheral'
connections differently than the 'host' connection, even apart from
expecting power to be present on the host port)

Maybe this version is also possible: http://www.digitus.info/en/products/network/?c=1241&p=651 Here in germany they are not as cheap but with ~10€ it is still ok. But on the website they only say that it uses a realtek chipset but not which. I know that the kernel supports some realtek chipsets by default, but i don't know if this usb version is supported. I will add this to the wiki right away, and correct as the discussion
continues. This info is too good to lose in the mailing list (although I
guess you could say it's not much worse than getting lost in the wiki,

With 2007.2 nightly build from mid august, it only worked on the console, and the LEDs didn't light. With Debian, it works everywhere, and the LEDs light up. With 2007.2, I also got a USB 3.5" floppy drive to work, going through a powered USB hub. (I didn't try directly.) It's the future! ;) Eli --.
