It sounds like you didn't use the StuffIT Lite 3.6 installer.

HQX is the extension for BinHex, available in various places all over the
web. Either a .bin or a .sea version will work.
Google searches reveal:

I have found the solution using Stuffit Expander 4.01 , I had problems with
3.6 lite version that could not unstuff *.hqx file
