Re: [Computer-go] McMahon tournaments on KGS
I have had second thoughts about this. People have encouraged me to use McMahon instead of Swiss for the KGS bot tournaments. But they may, like me, not have realised what they were asking for - that they would be getting an American McMahon, not a European one. Also, iniitial rating plays a larger part in deciding the result in an American McMahon than in a European one. KGS ratings are based entirely on 19x19 games. I don't think we want the results of small-board tournaments to be influenced by strength at 19x19 Go. Re: [Computer-go] McMahon tournaments on KGS
I have now realised that it was a language problem. "McMahon tournament" means different things in Europe and America. I knew only the European meaning, and KGS implements the American version. I assume that those who wrote here encouraging me to I hold the monthly KGS bot tournaments in McMahon format were referring to the American version; and that is what I can use. I hope they can advise me on sensible settings for "Handicap", "Low bar", and "High bar". I now think that this probably won't work. I have run a test McMahon tournament. No handicaps were assigned, or reported in the results. This *may* have been because none of the entrants had a confirmed rating (one had a ? rating, four were unrated), but I doubt it. Even if all the players were treated as having the same initial rating (probably 8k, where I had set the lower bar), handicaps should have been used by the final rounds. You can see the results at http://www.gokgs.com/tournEntrants.jsp?sort=n=1040 I will be willing to run another test tournament, today or tomorrow, if someone can provide a "Ranked Robot" to help with the test. It should be able to beat gnugo3pt8 consistently, and should preferably be willing to play 9x9 Go. All you need to do is leave it running on KGS in tournament mode, and email me with its name. I have left gnugo3pt8 running, to restore its confirmed rating. [Computer-go] McMahon tournaments on KGS
I had been persuaded, by postings to this list, to run the monthly KGS bot tournaments with a McMahon division.
